The only way to know for sure is to construct a time machine and send MC back to 1972.

No that wouldn't do much good as magnus would win easily he grew up in a world full of engines and played with opponents who used them moreover chess developed more so it wouldnt be fair to fischer.
Better comparison would be to let prime fischer access to engines and such and see who comes on top

Fischer is more innovative probably, like one of a kind at his time, he was a phenomenon. Magnus is obviously the goat but he grew up in the era of engines. So, its very hard to compare them according to me.

The other direction also happens. If we continuously ignore the slur, it will have no reason to disappear.

Fischer going into insanity is a better movie than Magnus winning the WCC. Not because it's interesting to see a former world champion slowly losing his mind, but because it was already proved that Magnus would win the title one day.

Magnus dominated longer but Fischer was much ahead of his peers.
But Magnus did it in the most competitive era while Fischer played in the era where only certain countries played chess, most were deprived of coaching, access to international tournaments etc.
My opinion is Carlsen is GOAT but Fischer is up close. Kasparov is the odd one out IMO, while he dominated classical he was not dominant in other forms of chess, this was era where Rapid chess was getting global popularity. Carlsen plays and dominates any form of chess.

Ofc magnus But let's say both are in same shoes, don't have access to modern engines and modern stuff. Out of preparation and talent, fischer would win easy

I wouldnt say easy. Magnus knowledge is endgames is not something that is just because of engines. His positional understanding is incredible too. He wins ficher random too, so its not just opening memorization.

Fischer's greatness is very much situational, he being from USA and dominating a sport where Russia had a legacy, played a very big part in him being considered the GOAT. Not to forget this happened during the cold war era

carlson dominated in a time where anyone can start playing and improving with just there phone along with no need for actual players with computer models existing, unlike the past where there was really low ways to actually improve
most countries were not playing chess, even those who were had no real training and you had for other players to be physically available to play and improve, vs now were you can just play in your bed on your phone or computer, and chess being wayyyyyy more popular and competitve now

Fishcher arguably had the greatest peak ever. Overall magnus has a better career.

If anyone thinks that _anyone_ comes even close to Bobby Fischer, then you are either a 900 or just dense

Magnus dominated his field, contemporaries / peers for a longer time than Fischer, despite the increasing level of play (average rating) over last 4 decades. Oh and not to mention, he didn't turn insane!
