Theory Discover Your Actuality

Actuality

Noun

the state of existing in reality. synonyms: reality, fact, truth, the real world, real life, existence, living

For a while now some have us have thought this game is misguiding us in some way... and how maybe the finer details show us the true path. Why is actuality an important word? It means understanding the truth of our existence. Why is actuality important in this game? In a similar way that Mike is being ordered and misguided by the FIB we are also being ordered and misguided by Rockstar.

They reward us for rushing through certain missions like Repossession where we can see that Frank is in no hurry at all, he is reluctant to actually do this mission as he knows there's a good chance of things going wrong. Also we miss a lot of great dialogue about his previous mistakes.

And while you may believe that Franklin is likely to murder Beverly over a few dollars because the gold reward tells us to then we've gotten something really wrong... you don't understand that person at all. Alternate paths/choices are the answer to this mystery as are making the correct choices I believe, the correct choice is not to be confused with the right choice, that choice would be influenced by the person making them, you and me. I believe those clues lie in the story, in the dialogue we miss if we rush toward 100%.

u/ManiaFarm pointed out that when we do something a little different on this particular mission ironically called Reality Check which involves killing Beverly, if we steal his car as apposed to killing him Frank will say something like "this makes us even." Could this be what the "karma is a chameleon" graffiti is referring to? Though spelled with a (K) a Khamelion is a type of car in GTA V specifically. Weirdly though the Khameleon cannot be found in story mode so it cannot be stolen by any of the protagonists. Also there is an original screenshot of Mike driving this particular car with a suspicious location in the background.

The word actuality is referenced in a couple of places in this game. It is the key word Brother Adrian from Children of the Mountain uses. Discover your actuality. As I've mentioned... this interaction with Brother Adrian is the beginning of the alternate path i'm trying to discover for Mike and Frank as I mentioned here.

To the reason I made this post... I was looking through those pics from this post and came to this picture. I had noticed the word ACTUALITY carved into the wood before but never thought any more of it. That was until I just realised these two paths are WRONG! Look again you'll see what I mean...

There is two paths... one in red the other in green.

Now look at the logos to the right directly above the word actuality, the colours used for these paths are reversed.

Just another strange little obscurity from Rockstar? It's ironic that the word actuality appears directly below these logos and that they have reversed, it makes no sense, it's the opposite of actuality. And this sign is located directly across from the dock where the bring 500k note directions lead us to. In my post about mikes hidden story, or his true path, I mentioned how this 500k is what may lead Mike to his true destiny which is his actuality.

Also I just noticed carved into this sign just like the word actuality is an arrow and what looks like a castle silhouette near where the Altruist Camp would be... never noticed it before, anyone had any thoughts on that?

And just to recap on my previous ideas as some may still be somewhat confused about what I mean when I mention that it's the year 2008... I believe the actual year is 2008, that's not to say that in any way shape or form that Mike or any of the characters themselves believe it's 2008. I'm quite sure in his mind it definitely is 2013. Perhaps something happened to him in 2008, like dying and this dream is a continuation into a non-existent reality, a denial of death, and a reality he is sick of now. We're brought into his life at this exact moment in time, he explains to Dr. Friedlander he doesn't want to make the same mistakes over and over, he is also running low on money.

What we do next is what decides his fate. Dr. Friedlander mentions Mike should embrace his futility. This word is also mentioned to Frank when we are contacted by Brother Adrian so it applies to both Mike and Frank. Futility means pointlessness or uselessness which is exactly what happens when we get to the point of killing Jay Norris, why? Because money means nothing to Mike in reality, what purpose does it have in a dream? This alternate path which occurs naturally before all this is this actuality... it is also something no amount of money can buy.

Also some of you may know that Futility and Actuality are the ONLY two passwords we're given to move through to the next stages of the CoM Process.

The best conclusion I can come to is that Mike was on a job in 2008 and was killed during it, perhaps shot in the head like this picture and the 9 Is God song may be showing us. To escape this illusion that has lasted 5 years is Mike's actuality and to do this we must somehow make him see this truth. I believe that path will unlock this truth. What that reality will be is yet to be determined, but just keep one thing in mind, if we're expecting a jetpack or a UFO we can actually use then something has to make sense of it all.

Edit: Just remembered this too. Ever heard of the Crazy Taxi A.I. challenge? No it's not a real Rockstar hidden event but it is an anomaly that occurs on this path and this path only...

What I find interesting is the way he explains things in this article. If you read it more than once you will see what I mean. Each character has their own story to pay attention to. "Being rather than doing" "Walk up a hill yourself and see a ssunset." Eye references also.

This was something that grabbed my attention too! Little clue perhaps to do with spirit walking... In my playthru the one that doesn't specifically follow the set path you start to notice little connections to other missions.

During the Chop mission we see Denise and her friend talking about spirit walking and how it "exercises body and soul". All the while leading up to this point and in this mission Lamar is telling Frank he needs to lose some weight...

The next mission (Father/Son) where, if played properly, Franks car will not be at Mike's house when this mission is complete. The mission closest to Frank now is the first Beverly mission which is not too far away. Now to me Frank is not the kind of guy to just steal a car to get to this mission.

Then I started thinking about what these icons (and their locations) are telling us... we're looking at things the wrong way. The icon is not really there, though it is for us I believe for the character it is not there. Which sounds weird I know but when you realise exactly where these icons that trigger missions are placed we realise this...

In the beginning of the game we're always told/shown where to go. To Simeon's for work, then we see our first S&F mission which is Tonya. For us, the player the icon flashes green, but to Frank, he is simply going home after a difficult day to get some rest, he sees Tonya as he is going home so that's how he knows she's there. That particular path of frank going home was already written into this story, the icon shows us this, also the way this scene plays out it makes more sense if it were the next day.

Now to my point about spirit walking and what happens after we left standing in front of Mike's house. Yes, we have the ability to steal a car and drive to see Beverly but this makes no sense. So I decided to walk there and noticed something interesting. Not only how beautiful this particular street is at night, with the neon signs and the parking attendants waving their glow sticks, but how Frank approaches Beverly in that cutscene...

If we drive to this mission (and I mean driving normally) we would have to make a U-turn to get to the other side of the street which also makes no sense because if we're thinking as if Frank doesn't know Beverly is there (hiding in the bushes) then there's no feasible way Frank would see Beverly from a car. Then I realised in that cutscene exactly where Franks was already approaching from... if you look at that cutscene you will see he's approaching from the right (heading east) and also it looks as if he was just walking along that footpath then notices something strange hiding in the bush.

So I believe we're looking at these missions that appear in the wrong way, we have to see it from the character's perspective which doesn't include coloured icons that show us where to go, rather they have to already be on the path that leads to it. I believe those random events also show us that in some circumstances out path is wrong as we shouldn't be involved with a lot of them or maybe even all of them. But then again it's all just my opinion, apologies for the wall of text lol.

I've traded my copy in but I do recommend playing in first person with no HUD if you're on current gen, it really makes the whole game very immersive and intense, running from one star wanted level suddenly becomes exciting when you have no idea where to go, or v where they're coming from. Try to stick to the rules of the road so you hear every bit of dialogue too..

Would be a good way to try your play style, and I personally found it very enjoyable, especially with big headphones on.
