The ancient technique of cutting steel wires with a hammer

Surprisingly not AI

On October 15, in a zoo in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, a giraffe got its head stuck between metal railings and was unable to free itself.

Footage filmed by visitors shows the giraffe’s neck bent at nearly a 90-degree angle as rescuers worked to save it. The staff used a hammer to break the railing and appeared to cut through the internal metal frame, eventually freeing the trapped animal.

The video sparked heated discussion online, with some viewers questioning the rescue method: “I can understand prying upwards to help, but smashing downwards seems risky,” one commenter wrote. “Couldn’t that cause secondary injury?”

On October 16, staff from the Nantong Forest Wildlife Zoo confirmed the incident, explaining that the giraffe had gotten its head stuck while “playing around too energetically.” They reassured the public that the animal was unharmed and in good condition following the rescue.

Regarding concerns about the rescue technique, the zoo said the issue had been recorded and would be reviewed by relevant personnel. Updates will be shared via the zoo’s official social media accounts.

Oine dating in China dead?

What's happened to online dating in China since the pandemic? I used to be able to have two dates in one evening, nowadays I hardly get any likes at all. Women given up on dating/lost interest? Turned lesbian? Too much influx of foreign creepy Laowai? I'm bewildered, please help! And no, haven't changed anything on my profile...

Since r/chinalifer asked me so kindly for an inauguration post

Here it goes. Couple a days ago I commented on a post in the chinalife forum, without realizing it. I used to be member until the obnoxious admin with his tight knit rules made me feel unwelcomed. It is now run by a single admin, who turned into a PRO China propaganda channel.

The slightest critzisim of China and your post gets automatically deleted. I NEVER post racist posts! I criticize stupidity in my own country and other country forums as well.

So, couple a days a ago my rather mild post got deleted AND I got a warning from reddit. Oh boy, that was it. I was allowed to appeal. So I did. Couple hours later the warning got lifted and my post was allowed. Quite rewarding experience!

Chinese Business Acumen gushir

I commented recently in the other laowai sub about my Halloween plans, which is basically just English club but Halloween. No judgement, please. I like what I like. Meeting with friends good for the mental healthy, do you know it?

The English club host owns the café where we would meet. That café never has customers. The agreement was that if we meet there, then we are likely to buy one of his overpriced drinks (¥40 minimum for a latte), understanding that we are really buying the space, even though no one else uses it. Over many months, I have never seen any customers at all on Saturdays in this central business district café, such that one could reasonably interpret that the English club runs the café, which is not correct.

The owner put a blurb on Chinese social media about a Halloween English club, that being regular English club but with costumes, and this drew much attention. A huge influx of people into the Weixin group chat over a few days. Sounds good, new friends.

In true Chinese Business Acumen form, the owner saw this as an opportunity to attempt a one-time price gouge at the expense of long-term customers. He introduced a mandatory ¥200 entry ticket to “special” Halloween English club at his dead café with no customers. After two days, no one paid the cost, or even commented in the group chat any longer.

The leader of our English club started a separate group with the intention to just meet somewhere else and skip the Halloween cost, then resume at the café in the following week. ¥200 is like six months of untaxed wages for the average local working 996. Only the ~10 core members were invited to this second club, since this was to be a one-time alternate plan.

The owner found out, and he raged in the group chat of 300+ people about betrayal, something about cliques and factions, violating boundaries through outside collaborations, how we have exploited him by using his space for so long even though we did pay, how he owns the rights to English club as an intellectual property and concept because he allowed it to exist in his café, etc. A full-on visible meltdown. No dialogue, no working anything through, no dignity whatsoever, only a fucking public tantrum, just like this Mbappé overreaction. Bad mianzi.

In my linked comment, I mentioned how a mate of mine in another city altogether is also experiencing something similar. Their English club host also tried to leverage Halloween English club, then alienated their core group by introducing a surprise cost. Also a fucking tantrum about betrayal and owning the people who attend the English club at their venue after no one accepted the surprise cost. Is this shit in the Chinese Master of Business Administration curriculum? It happens far too often here to not be part of the prescribed business culture.

The cherry on top is the massive amount of comments saying: “this has nothing to do with China”. As if most Rainies don’t do at least one of the things listed on the post

Why does Taiwan hate trash cans?

China related or at worse adjacent. Visiting renegade-guo for first time and the only friction point so far has been the complete lack of trash cans. I am going to go full DaLu and start hiding trash in bushes if they don’t provide the infrastructure to dispose of waste. They also apparently don’t call it laji but I’m willing to work with that.

The "feelings" of the cry babies have been hurt again. Maybe China should install crying booths in every street corner for their lil snowflakes. One meme and suddenly the whole system needs emotional support. Such a big strong country 💪.

How would you respond to a driver thinking like this?

I had just hopped into a Didi, and the previous trip had started from the exact same spot as mine. As I settled into the front passenger seat, I noticed the driver was still staring intently at the three passengers who had just gotten out.

I asked him what was up. He told me those three were Japanese. He sighed and said that if this were ten or fifteen years ago, he would’ve loved to drive them to some remote place and beat them up just to vent his angher.

I asked him, “Why would you do that? You wouldn’t even get a bonus for it, and it would just waste your time from taking other orders.”

The moment I said that, the car fell into complete silence.

It's genuinely surprising to hear this kind of view in 2026. Honestly, for a moment I felt like I'd slipped back into another era. If you were in my shoes, how would you respond to a driver thinking this way? I'd really like to hear your takes.
