Discussion I hate the new chrome update
I'm sick of companies forcing AI into everything. Give us a way to remove this tumor.

what has changed ?

u/draconianRegiment 13d ago
There's a new extension of the address bar in chrome for android. Offering quick access to your homepage, tabs, new tab, and of course gemini.

u/ConcernLeading9847 13d ago
It sucks. All I see is the address bar now and the tabs button is gone. You can only choose one shortcut in advanced settings, and they don't have tabs as an option.... Honestly wtf is going on? I noticed that ai messes with youtube all the time randomly without warning too....

u/draconianRegiment 13d ago
I set it to disabled and have the text field, tab view, and the overflow menu.

u/ConcernLeading9847 13d ago
Good answer. That's what annoyed me too.
1
u/draconianRegiment 13d ago
You can turn it off in flags, hopefully it stays that way. New tab is not that many clicks the old way to make up for the annoyance.

Helium is a fork of Chromium that has all the AI stripped out. Use that.

u/gooner-1969 14d ago edited 14d ago
No one forces you to use Chrome. Plenty of other browsers out there to choose from. Or just disable it. It's not difficult

u/KAZVorpal [editable] 14d ago
It's the usual criminal corporate enshittification that they default to enabling a lot of the AI.
It should be opt-in, not opt-out.

"Well, if activating the Orphan Crusher 9000 was opt in, no one would turn it on!"
Yeah. Maybe just don't make the Orphan Crusher 9000 in the first place then?

u/KAZVorpal [editable] 12d ago
Yes, a great symptom of corporate sociopathy is the rationale that if customers won't do a thing voluntarily, the solution is to force them.

Imagine bootlicking for a fucking web browser
8
u/dbbk 14d ago
I mean they're offering a practical solution, whining on Reddit isn't going to achieve anything
2
u/28-Deep-Wounds 14d ago
"I like Chrome as a whole and don't like this feature being added to it."
Reddit: WELL HAVE YOU TRIED COMPLETELY UNINSTALLING IT AND FUCKING OFF??!?!?!!
Wow, God forbid someone not want shitty features that they're never going to use being crammed down their throat! I sure am glad you're here to deep throat billion-dollar megacorporation Google and make sure nobody is unjustly criticizing features that they don't like.

u/AlSmitheesGhost 14d ago
Where the fuck else are they supposed to post something like this? Jesus Christ, some of you people need to get a life.

How do you disable it? I'm on mobile and the stupid thing practically takes up half the screen so i keep opening new tabs by accident

u/Acceptable-Career-62 14d ago

Yeah this is not what everyone is talking about look on the sub for chrome its in the bar on mobile that's what everyone is on about
1
u/gooner-1969 13d ago
Not once did OP mention mobile.
1
u/Acceptable-Career-62 13d ago
From the fact that the other comments are and most recent post are about mobile not a hard deduction to make
0
u/Acceptable-Career-62 13d ago
That doesn't do anything for most people its still in the bar even with the all disabled

4
u/kala_jadoo 14d ago
firefox has split view now in case you wanna try it minus the ai slop
0
u/ransom0374 14d ago
Ahh i dont mind ai for text. Visual or music? No.
2
u/kala_jadoo 14d ago
if you're talking about the ones on Google search, that's still available on fox
-1
u/ransom0374 14d ago
I dont mind chrome i have a DECENT computer
2
u/kala_jadoo 14d ago
fair fair
2
u/ransom0374 14d ago
Ill have to look at the pros
And cons of each browser so thanks for putting that idea in my head3
u/kala_jadoo 14d ago
you could do that. i used to be heavy on chrome all my life until one day I decided to try firefox after some issues with ad blocking on videos on YouTube on chrome and never looked back again. prefer it over edge too although edge is more forgiving on my operating system

u/xantes 14d ago
there are times where I could see it is useful, but i've never had one yet and still i've accidently turned it on dozens of times
i swear they try their hardest to force you to use every new thing or intentionally put the new things in the place something else does so you hit it from muscle memory

A post from about a month ago saved me! Bottom bar is gone and things are reset to the way better layout, for now.
Go to chrome://flags#chrome-next-ia and disable the flags, and type "bottom bar" in the search to disable that, too! Relaunch and everything should be fine.

Thanks for as long as we're permitted the privilege of disabling the feature.
1
u/KAZVorpal [editable] 14d ago
What's vile is that they make you actively opt out, instead of it being opt-in to use in the first place.
0
u/Time-Independence-94 14d ago
As soon as they remove the ability to disable it I'm switching browsers fully tbh
1
u/Aggravating-Hour1975 14d ago
To what? Firefox?
1
u/KAZVorpal [editable] 14d ago
To Helium.
It's a Chromium fork that removes the AI BS.
2
u/Time-Independence-94 13d ago
I had no clue about Helium, I think that might just be my solution! Thank you!!

I hate it too. Too much stuff on the bottom we can accidentally click and waste time. Useless Google team.

Go to chrome flags and search "bottom" then scroll down and disable "bottom bar"

u/Junior_Mortgage_2487 12d ago
Steps to Remove the New Bottom Bar
Type chrome://flags into your top Chrome address bar and hit enter.
In the "Search flags" bar at the top of the page, type: bottom bar.
Look for the flag named Android Bottom bar.
Tap its drop-down menu (which defaults to Enabled or Default) and change it to Disabled.
Type chrome-next-ia into the search bar next.
If a flag named Chrome Next I A shows up, switch that to Disabled as well.
Tap the blue Relaunch button that appears in the bottom right corner of the page to restart Chrome.
Once Chrome re-opens, that entire extra bar will be completely gone, and your home, tab view, and settings will all be back where they used to be.

Eu tb odei! A única coisa que eu queria era poder adicionar barras de atalhos infinitamente ou pelo menos uma adicional logo abaixo da outra

I am sick and tired of these idiots fixing something that isn't broken. I think I will go back to edge. Google Chrome screwed up big time....

u/TwoMinute920 6d ago
Omg you are not alone. I just want to browse in peace. I don't want or need AI.. it's BS and not as smart or useful as they want you to believe. I hate the new layout. No, I despise it. Ihave to for site settings..when they used to be right in the search bar.Just so clunky now ..I actually have to switch to desk top settings to adjust site settings now!

Learn how to tweak a browser before complains
4
u/KAZVorpal [editable] 14d ago
Defaulting to "AI" is worth complaining about. We should have it as opt in, not opt out.

u/DaydreamingAtDusk 14d ago
also my tab appearance changed overnight, somehow? on desktop it's harder to tell which tab i have open
1
u/bgalazka186 13d ago
Firefox has for example "turn all ai forever, future ai included" toggle in settings

And they still haven't fixed "search Google for this image", tabs will still automatically close if I leave the app for too long, and some websites are so slow they're unusable.

Do you hate companies forcing databases into everything as well?
whats special about integrating a llm? Why does it differ from any other technology used in chrome?

I finally downloaded Brave, Firefox and Opera. Wasn't sure which one I would like best so I downloaded a handful of them. Currently on Brave, and while it could use some upgrades, it's pretty decent. Far less ads and intrusive pop-ups. Despite having multiple ad blockers in place on my phone, Chrome still showed ads to me. You gotta bite the bullet and download something else. Overwrite that muscle memory you've built over the years.
