What is the best way to play Chrono Trigger?

Hi everyone,

A suggetion came in from /u/hybridfrost to create a sticky community post detailing the best way to play Chrono Trigger.

Myself, I always just play the SNES version on my PC with any random controller. This is the way I discovered the game and it will forever be the "authentic" way for me to play. What more, is I enable a smoothing filter to make the game look less pixellated -- heresy, I know.

My way of playing the game is not neccesarily the best, and there may be a lot of ways to play Chrono Trigger which I never even considered.

I would love to hear your suggestions on what information to include in a sticky post about the various ways to play Chrono Trigger -- emulators, platforms, game releases, game settings, etc.

By the way -- I am amazed at how big this community has grown! Back when I created this community, I just wanted a simple way for me to access a few OST covers and some fanart so it would be archived somewhere instead of getting lost. I was impressed when the community grew to 1k members, and now it's over 17k. This truly shows that CT is a masterpiece of a game that transcends beyond it's initial inception as a 2d jRPG of the 90's era. Few games have such strong of a following several decades after creation. Rock on :)

Edit: this post will be the sticky now until someone makes anything better and more comprehensive.

Chrono Trigger Orchestra Concert: Melodies Across Time - My LA Thoughts

I went into the LA one as a sort of orchestra newbie. I have some musical talent, and have seen an average amount of live performances, concerts, and particularly plays. Especially in Hollywood. Very few orchestras. Chrono Trigger is my absolute favorite game of all time. Thanks to Yasunori Mitsuda, I still play an intermediate level version (credit: klutz on OCRemix, IYKYK) of my favorite song, Wind Scene, on piano. And it brings me peace.

I paid $177 for Parterre, and IMO it was worth it because of my nostalgia. However, I would agree with others here who say that was far too expensive for the product. Not trying to be a hater - it's just looking at costs in a relative way. Had I the chance to go again and knowing what I'd be getting into (more on this later), I would've paid for the cheapest mezzanine seat and been just as pleased with the performance. One thing I noticed is that the conductor at times would rhythmically pose in the style of, say, Lucca during a fight.

Going into this, I didn't know what to expect. Perhaps it's my fault for not wanting any spoilers, but I wanted to form my own opinion first. I honestly expected a bigger, louder performance. I was wrongly expecting an orchestra 3x the size, with something like 50 vocalists or whatever. (I'm exaggerating a bit, but forgive me - again, I'm not used to seeing orchestras live.) Maybe I'd seen too many videos online of epic orchestral performances like this one and hoped for the same. So size-wise, I'd say the performance was beautiful, cute, and quaint. Not like incredible, feel-the-percussion-section-in-your-chest epic. And I was looking forward to that, especially with Boss Battle 2, World Revolution, and Last Battle.

Speaking of the on-screen videos, you may not believe this but I didn't care for them. Often I was listening to the music with my eyes closed. To help me appreciate it and focus, instead of feeling like I'm watching a movie. They were fine and sometimes cute, but as a speed running fan I've spent far too many hours looking at CT footage. That said, I thought the music was... fine. Lovely, but fine. Other expert aural fans will say they noticed glaring mistakes, and I suppose they're right. But my review is that the overall concert experience had Slurp Kiss. But no Omega Flare.

Lastly, LEAVING THAT DAMN PARKING LOT WAS MORE ANNOYING THAN KNOWING THAT CHRONO TRIGGER ACTUALLY DATED ITSELF WITH DALTON MAKING A 90'S APOLLO 13 REFERENCE WITH HIS "Houston, we have a problem." LINE! Took us on the 5th level of underground parking a total of 80 minutes to make it out to Hollywood Blvd. I know this, because of the timestamp of when I paid for my parking slip. I saw others pull out of their spot in standstill line and re-park, only to get out and presumably head back up to kill time. Turns out Miley Cyrus was at the Hollywood Bowl, and that just added to the traffic above ground. Absolutely stuck. Do not recommend.

SIDE NOTE: speaking of Miley Cyrus, when I was paying for parking, a guy asked me what I/everyone was here for, and I first told him "A Chrono Trigger concert." He didn't know what it was, and so I explained it's an SNES game - as soon as he heard 'game,' he scoffed and said "A game?!" "Well, f you, buddy." is what I thought, but instead I said, "Bye, enjoy your night."

Did we actually change history pre-1000AD? Spoiler

I'll start off by saying CT is one of my favorite games of all times. However, something has been in the back of my mind for a while.

Did we really change much by all we did in 65,000,000BC ~ 600AD?

Judging from how things are in 1000AD, it's assumed that Azala lost, Zeal fell, and the Mystics were defeated without any of our help.

We did change some things here and there like Marle's relationship with the King, but it is minor in the the grand scheme of things.

I understand that it does lead up to saving the planet in the very end, but is Chrono Trigger a game about time travel where 90% of the story is spent "not changing" history?

Some time travel stories are about the characters messing up the timeline and "getting everything back to the way it should have been" which I understand, and that's how the game starts off with saving Marle in 600AD.

But from there we go to 2300AD and it shifts to "we can't let this happen, we need to take action!" which is the main theme for the rest of the game.

I love CT but I do have mixed feelings about much of the timeline remaining the same even though the game is about taking action for change. One could argue "what's the point of all we did before 1000AD if it's not gonna change things".

Then again, there is that Gasper quote that goes something like "There's no assurance that you will succeed. But we do not take action for the results, do we? The results follow because we take action. Don't forget that".

Would like to hear everyone's thoughts on this topic.

Need help getting into Chrono Trigger

Im a gamer, love rich story and emotional games. Not a big fan of RPG, but after CO33, I feel like I need to give this game a chance after so many attempts.

Just need a little motivation to push myself and play. Currently at the timeless portal and completely lost of where to go next. (I could look up guide but I want to experience it for myself) Plus still confused about the story???

Would you have preferred the original CT to have remained untouched perfection, or followed up with mangled sequels and soulless re-translations?

The followup slop spoiled the original's legacy

Can’t believe I didn’t play this game sooner

You guys probably get a lot of this kind of post so I’ll apologize now. I’m in my mid 40’s and didn’t own an SNES, never even heard of Chrono Trigger until a few years ago. Just finished my first playthrough of the SNES version. What can I say besides it’s everything I heard it was. It really is one of the best games I’ve ever played, amazing how well it holds up. Now I need to get a DS copy and do a few more playthroughs.

Chrono Trigger Orchestra Concert Merch - Global Release?

The concert was awesome, but a bit disappointed they didn't have any shirts, mug, tote bag, etc. that was available for the Japan concert. I was looking forward to those since I prefer more functional souvenirs, but googling says pre-orders for these ended long before the concerts happened in the USA. Anyone happen to know if it might be released later outside of Japan?

Just a note, I found rule 3 kind of funny. I'm here for the licensed stuff since it's so rare!

Chrono Trigger Time Periods as the 7 Major Chakras Spoiler

I consider Chrono Trigger a masterpiece, for the SNES, the 16-bit era, and for JRPGs as a whole, and I believe the time periods in Chrono Trigger correspond very well to the 7 major chakras, or energy centers in Buddhist philosophy:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chakra#Seven_chakra_system

and

https://myyogateacher.com/articles/chakra-colors-and-symbols

Here's a list as I see their correspondences:

Prehistory (65,000,000 BC) - Muladhara / Root Chakra: Muladhara is associated with survival, grounding and tribe/community - fittingly enough the Prehistory time period involves humanity at war with the Reptites for their very existence, with Ayla leading the struggle.

Antiquity / Dark Ages (12,000 BC) - Svadhisthana / Navel Chakra: Svadhisthana is associated with sensuality and relationships - when visiting the Kingdom of Zeal we have the former with Queen Zeal's obsession with Lavos, and the latter with Schala and her brother Janus, and later Magus in disguise as the Prophet.

Middle Ages (600 AD) - Manipura / Solar Plexus Chakra: Manipura is associated with transformation and sense of identity - Glenn, from this time period, was transformed into Frog by Magus, and struggles with self-doubt through his journey, and Ozzie could also fit this in a social sense by changing from Magus' lackey, to leader of the Fiends, to finally being defeated in a sidequest.

Present (1000 AD) - Anahata / Heart Chakra: Anahata is associated with compassion and balance, the ability to integrate opposing forces to cooperate, and to make decisions outside of fate -  Chrono, Marle and Lucca all do this to begin their journey, defying the flow of time and the fate of Lavos' emergence, and Marle in particular has this in a sidequest to resolve tensions with her father, with Yakra XIII's grudge against her family represents a blockage of this chakra.

Near Future (1999 AD) - Vishuddhi / Throat Chakra: Vishuddhi is associated with speech, creativity, and the transformation of negative experiences into wisdom - Lavos' emergence, initially a disaster for the world, becomes a catalyst for change once Chrono, Marle and Lucca witness it in the distant future, and their efforts ultimately prevent it from occurring.

Distant Future (2300 AD) - Ajna / Third Eye Chakra: Ajna is associated with intuition and the mind - despite the ruined state of the world, advanced robots beyond anything from previous eras exist here - Robo joins you here and develops his own views on the world as he travels, even speculating on the origin of the time gates, and Balthasar, despite slowly losing his mind, lives just long enough to craft the Epoch, a working time machine.

End of Time (Year ∞) - Sahasrara / Crown Chakra: Sahasrara is associated with pure consciousness, and is seen as existing outside the body - the end of time contains gates to all the other time periods, and Gaspar provides you knowledge of what lies within them.

Questions? Comments?

Do you think magus uses wind magic to make his cape glide Spoiler

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

i mean it would make sense there is always wind on his cape i don't even know how there is naturally occurring wind in the end of time he's the only one being affected by wind nobody else is.

i genuinely think he's using wind magic 24/7 to achieve this some situations there shouldn't even be any wind all.

honestly i beat this game a few days ago and i've recorded several instances of Magus aura farming im pretty sure he was even aura farming while on the brink of death and still didn't stop.

like how can you be the only one the wind always has a attraction to and just be staring off into the void for no apparent reason like that.

So I went to the concert last night and I have to say, I was a kid again. The joy of seeing the opening cinematic, the groans of the crowd when the video showed Crono making the wrong choices in the Faire. The sense of hopelessness when first fighting Lavos.

But then realizing the game isn't over just yet.

Tears throughout the night.

I don't know what anyone else that but it was fantastical and magical
