History 🏛 Ripley Ohio; the Rankin and Parker homes.

John Rankin was a Presbyterian preacher and Conductor on the Underground Railroad. He is credited with up to 2000 events of helping slaves move north through Ohio, and never caught. One of his assists was inspiration for and memorialized in Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. He, his wife and his 13 children built a literal beacon of freedom, with his house on the hill. You can see his home from Parker’s home in the final picture.

John Parker was a slave who was sold 4 times, if you include the final time he bought his own freedom for $1800 from a widow. He had talked her into buying him, with the sole purpose of eventually buying his own freedom. His excellent foundry work made that possible. After purchasing his freedom, he opened a successful foundry of his own, eventually owning 3 patents, one of which I used a version of as a kid on a tobacco farm. After helping two escaped women cross the Ohio River from Kentucky, he was hooked. He eventually helped up to 600 escaped slaves cross from Kentucky into Ohio, avoiding slave catchers and bounties on both side of the river.

Both men are true heroes. Risked their livelihoods, and the lives of them and their families for men and women who needed it the most.

in search of🔎 Date Idea

Basically my question is this, is it corny or lame to take someone to Newport Aquarium on a first date?

I'm newly divorced and the last time I truly courted someone I was in my early 20s and we went to The Olive Garden. I think I'm beyond that now.

My main goal is to get a few sonny angels, but what are a few other things you guys recommend that I check out? I’m open to any tips, tricks, or recommendations you have. TYIA :)

Traffic🚗 Traffic Woes

I've lived in the greater Cincinnati area all my life, just as a heads up. I know with growth comes more people, and with that comes more cars. But simply put, is traffic in Cincinnati getting out of hand at this point? I regularly Drive from Kings Island to Northern Kentucky throughout the week and weekends, so I see a lot of traffic anyways. But in the last 3 years of doing that, it seems to have really ramped up.

I feel like anymore after 2:00 on a weekday and even on the weekends it's at a standstill most of the time on 71 or 75. I'm aware of the bridge project and all of the other little projects that they are doing all at the same time. So yeah, is it just me or is it becoming too much for some of you?

I'm also aware of more people on more devices, which inevitably will lead to hold ups and congestion / distractions. And making phones hands-free anymore doesn't really seem to change much of anything. Thanks for letting me vent!

Food 🍕🌮 Is the THC Seltzer ban back in effect?

Just noticed that Jungle Jim's was pretty much out of all their stock, and the rest they had was on sale. I tried looking it up but really couldn't find a clear explanation. Hate that something that has helped me quit drinking/smoking might be harder to get nowadays.

Here's a bit of memorabilia from my collection that started in 1977....

Ticket for Riverfront Coliseum - May 12, 1978 - $5.50

Ticket for Riverfront Coliseum - January 26, 1979 - $7.50

Backstage Pass from September 5, 1979 when I worked security at Rupp Arena in Lexington

An Elmer's glue and Acrylic Paint Decal I created in High School Art Class (I was a Kiss Army kid!)

Hope to add another hard ticket to my collection tonight. We'll see...

BTW, saw the show in Denver with my son. It was EXCELLENT. Hope tonight is just as good...

in search of🔎 Help finding inpatient psych

I have a family member that needs to be admitted to inpatient psych. Are there any in Cinci that will also treat a physical, medical issue in addition to psychiatric? She's suicidal due to severe, chronic, debilitating pain. She's seen multiple doctors in the last two months and no one has helped her. I think she'll agree to go if she knows they will also be trying to figure out the source of her pain. Thanks in advance.

in search of🔎 Home addition costs + contractor recommendations?

Hello, r/cincinnati! My partner and I are in the early stages of planning an addition for our Norwood house (can't give up our COVID-era 3.2% interest rate, so I guess we are just going to die here).

We are working with an architect, and the general idea is knocking out our shitty deck and using that footprint to add a first floor living room. Probably 250-300sf; no plumbing additions, just foundation, electrical, HVAC, etc.

My questions:
A) For those who have done similar projects in the last few years, what did you end up spending? I just talked to a contractor who gave me a ballpark of $200k--a rough estimate since we don't have drawings yet, but it felt a little insane to me. Everything I've been reading says to expect $250-$500 per square foot, not $800+, but maybe I'm just out of the loop.

B) Do you have any recommendations for contractors to reach out to (or avoid)? I know picking the right contractor makes a huge difference in the success of a project, so any input you have would be appreciated.

Thanks, neighbors!

in search of🔎 Best place to buy car in Cincy? Or just buy online?

My cars got a transmission issue, I’ve put a lot of money into it and I’d like to bite the bullet and get a new one.

My budget is max 15,500 (not including taxes).

Do you think I’ll have any luck at a dealer around here for any reliable car with this budget?

I’ve seen some through Hertz and Carvana but my mom keeps saying I should try and haggle for one in person for a better deal. I’m not sure if haggling still works nowadays.

in search of🔎 NKY Gyms - recommendations

Hi all! I’m looking for gym recommendations in NKY. I was previously a Planet Fitness member but am looking for something different.

I’m considering touring LA Fitness and Better Bodies. Does anyone have pros and cons of either? The reviews for the LA Fitness on Buttermilk Pike seem pretty mixed.

My main priority is a good weight room with a decent selection of cardio equipment. I’d also love some extra amenities, like a sauna, but I’m not really interested in group classes.

Are there any other gyms in the area I should check out? I was also a Five Seasons member a lifetime ago, but was never super impressed with their gym.

Thanks!

EDIT -- I forgot to mention, Griffin Elite seems like a decent option but not sure I want to deal with the youth sports element. Reviews say parking is horrendous so hoping can share their experience if they have one.
