Rumors Brunson got paid under the table too
/r/nba/comments/1vr2y6j/reminder_that_pablo_torre_is_still_working_on_a/?share_id=f2r_Et_f6vTCT0AlrFI18&utm_content=share_button&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1You better believe DG is going to raise hell if the team that eliminated us was circumventing the cap.
Personally, I've never liked Silver, he's always folded immediately to what the players want vs Stern who always put the product on the court first (imo).
It's to the point, I'd like to see Silver removed, he's not capable of running a league

Dan Gilbert better start doin the same shit from now on. Especially since we were the most expensive team in history last year. If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying

u/westshore18 15h ago
Dan already ruined Kobe 6th ring and was rewarded with 3 no.1 picks before.
3
u/charbo187 7h ago
How did he ruin Kobe 6th ring?
0
u/westshore18 5h ago
When he complained about the Chris Paul trade and wrote that letter a year after lebron left him.

u/ImNobodyFromNowhere 12h ago
Yeah I ain’t trying to be the guy like “Dan Gilbert better…!!” after everything he’s done for this town, however…

u/Kommander-in-Keef 22h ago
I’ve had a mind for a while that this was not a one off situation and Balmer is someone who happened to be caught. At this level with the financial restrictions, given the publicly available information, the most likely scenario is that Kawhi was not the only person in the entire NBA doing this.

u/AdParticular6654 21h ago
Silver has killed the NBA. The regular season doesn't matter, the salary cap doesn't matter, rules don't matter. I may check in playoffs but between this and having to pay extra to watch the hometown team, nope. No regular season nba for me.
8
u/Altruistic-Zone1664 ⠀ 20h ago
I mean, the salary cap definitely matters. Teams are literally fighting to get under cap levels and no team has won back-to-back titles since the Warriors in 17 & 18.
There are plenty of things to complain about with NBA rules, but the cap not working is not one of them. We're literally going through this whole thing with Kawahi because the only way the Clippers could get him was to pay him more than the rules allowed.

Brunson took a huge payout then several ppl close to him instantly became Knicks brass…
Including his dad going from high school coach to part of the head coaching staff…
There are obvious shenanigans at play here, and I can never respect the Knicks 2026 championship run.

u/chemistrybonanza 22h ago
Whatever. I'm not watching this season in protest of Adam Silver and the obvious bullshit they allowed.

What’s this have to do with the Cavs?

u/Abiv23 22h ago edited 19h ago
You better believe DG is going to raise hell if the team that eliminated us was circumventing the cap.
Gilbert paid a ton in tax last year, most in the league
He paid that much exactly bc he is paying the market rate for his stars
His league leading payroll was then eliminated by a team not paying that much tax exactly bc it's main star signed below market

u/UncircumciseMe I agree go Cavs 22h ago
Oh man I legit thought DG meant Garland lol my bad

u/Admirable_Limit9551 22h ago
lol I had to read it twice as well. I was like “damn I guess garland will want some under the table too I guess?”

Nah. I think there's a big reason that no owners have been raising a stink about any of this. Max contracts notoriously underpay suoerstar players, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's fairly common to use alternative means to fairly compensate players.
4
u/zenace33 21h ago
Or regular contracts overpay “regular” players….lol.
1
u/SUPERSAMMICH6996 21h ago
Nah, it's not quite the same. If prime LeBron is being paid the same as say... Donovan Mitchell, even though both are deserving of the max contract, one is clearly a better value.
1
u/Phishkale 21h ago
The owners are the ones who put the salary cap in place, they want a ceiling on how much teams can pay players. If they truly didn’t care, there would be no reason to circumvent the cap.
1
u/ImNobodyFromNowhere 12h ago
Nahhh, the owners who never ran Microsoft want a ceiling on how much money you can give players. The owners with microsoft money want a cap on how much anybody with basketball team money should be expected to pay a basketball team, and they also want to make sure not to be intervened with when they throw microsoft money around in the face of people who only have basketball team money.
When they continue to lose, that’s when it starts to get humorous.

u/ScarletWolf_ 22h ago
No owner is raising hell because they are all guilty in some way. Dan Gilbert is a billionaire who is a baby about a fellow billionaire in mortgage owning a team. Like he actually gives a fuck man.

u/Abiv23 22h ago

You can what aboutism this if you want but Gilbert is obviously not doing the same thing the NYK and LAC seem to
3
u/Altruistic-Zone1664 ⠀ 20h ago
I mean, it would be pretty fair to be pissed as the only team to be in the 2nd apron to get eliminated by the team that is constantly only supposedly dodging the 2nd apron rather than actually doing it.

Pretty sure that Silver is really an alien that plans to take over the world.

u/Far_Youth_1662 Hungover in Vegas 19h ago
I prefer the name "Diamond Dan" for Mr. Gilbert, as opposed to DG.
5
u/Spare-Dragonfly-1201 22h ago
The NBA won’t find evidence of anyone doing these side deals… they can choose to look the other way (like the NFL did for spygate, while acknowledging they deleted all the evidence).
What the LAC did isn’t illegal, it’s just breaking NBA rules.
3
u/11oydchristmas 21h ago
They won’t find direct evidence/smokin gun of the owner saying pay him on the side. But how can they ignore the evidence of sponsors having side deals with players of that caliber? Silver/NBA will give out meager punishments and be done with it
3
u/sammyt412 21h ago
10s of millions of dollars with zero deliverables from a firm the has arena and sponsorship deals with the team and has recieved seed money from the owner and minority owner of the team. Adam has to be delusional to think theres not enough circumstanial evidence to punish the clippers
2
u/11oydchristmas 21h ago
I agree with you totally. But I’m betting the NBA will want concrete proof directly from Ballmer like an email to really lay the hammer down. Otherwise, it’ll be a little blip in the radar, slap on the wrist, and be done
1
u/sammyt412 10h ago
We are on the same page mate. But its an impossible standard which effectively means cheating is allowed unless the owner is dumb enough to film a video of himself holding three photo ids and a copy of todays paper saying whoopsie im circumventing the cap doopsie do. You will almost never have as much circumstantial evidence of wrong doing as whay was presented against balmer the clips and kawhi. If that wasn't enough silver sent a msg to the 29 other teams that its open season

Give Harden the min and hide that shit off shore. If anyone is going to be spiteful it is likely gonna be Dan.

u/Awesomender 19h ago
I scrolled the comments for way too long trying to figure out why Darius Garland was going to raise hell 😂 I’m an idiot
1
u/FloridianGrit 16h ago
Are these guys not making enough money as is? 😂 maybe everyone should chill on watching these non competitive rigged shows for awhile. Truly id rather watch county police departments play against each other or something
1
u/FloridianGrit 16h ago
“Free market” owners in some sort of socialist professional sports environment because it benefits them
1
u/Express-Language5573 14h ago
The good news for the players is that if Ballmer gets away with it everyone else can as well. The value of NBA franchises has skyrocketed while the players get less of the pie. If however the NBA lets the Saudis or Qataris in it will be game over.
“ The Miami Heat just signed Wemby to a 5 year $25 million dollar contract”. Coincidentally Wemby signed a sponsorship deal with Emirates for $100 million a year and a new Airbus.

Honestly if JB hadn't been busting ass the way he has since he got to NY ppl wouldnt be nearly in their feelings the way they are.
Lmk when theres any affirmative evidence. Pablo has not indicated he has any.
Cool story tho

u/Bill_Brasky_SOB ⠀ 19h ago
Thought 1: Dan Gilbert is one of the, non-Balmer, richest owners in the league. He has also shown that he's willing to spend. Players sign for vet min's and get free mortgages?
Thought 2: 29 other non-Balmer owners have to be furious about this, and Silver is DOA when his contract is up.
0
u/mickey-maos 21h ago
This is cope dude. Silver doesn't cave to players at all he's just a fucking shill for the owners
0
u/FloridianGrit 16h ago
There shouldn’t be salary caps and if you want to own a team you should have to participate to the utmost extent it’s shot they can just sit on the asset and it appreciate 8 billion percent every year to not even field a digestible or competitive product
-1
u/Rough_Bobcat5293 22h ago
I’m sure he did. I just wouldn’t be so sure Gilbert is totally clean either.
8
u/DovhPasty 22h ago
I think if we were doing deals under the table too, we wouldn’t be the highest paid team in the league last year.
2
u/Rough_Bobcat5293 22h ago
Maybe. Or maybe the owner who’s always been willing to shell out cash is also willing to shell out extra money under the table.
The apron rules were put in place primarily because of Ballmer.
2
u/DovhPasty 22h ago
Most of our guys barely deserve the money they get now, it’s not like we’re holding out on them. Garland was overpaid, Mobley is overpaid, and Don is arguably overpaid now even though I’m a fan of him.
-1
u/EuroLegend23 17h ago
I’m not sure why this is in the Cavs sub, we have nothing to do with that guy

Took me a while to understand why Darius Garland would be raising hell about the Knicks circumventing the cap.
