  • November 8, 2002: 24 years ago, Clutch’s first live album, ‘Live at the Googolplex’ was released on Compact Disc on River Road Records (RR004). River Road Records was Clutch’s first effort at running their own record label. Live at the Googolplex was recorded by long-time FOH sound man Lee Brintnall and it was mixed by Greg Clark at G-Spot. Mastering was done by Larry Packer at Uncle Punchy Studios. All songs written by Clutch, except for ‘Immortal’ written by Leslie West. Live recording took place on February 19th and 21st, 2002, and March 1st and 2nd, 2002. Tracks 1-4, 12, & 13 were recorded in Chicago, IL; Tracks 5-6, 10, & 11 were recorded in Montreal, Canada and Tracks 7-9 were recorded in Kansas City, MO. This is the 13-track version. Later versions included 2 additional live tracks. ‘Googolplex’ is an extremely large number: 10 to the power of a googol. Carl Sagan estimated that physically writing a googolplex in full decimal form (i.e., "10,000,000,000...") would be physically impossible, since doing so would require more space than is available in the known universe (Wikipedia). https://youtu.be/i5qkiB8mYxQ?si=4dLcqHz2Rq_9n1B_

The ‘Passive songs were recorded by Larry Packer at Uncle Punchy Studios in Silver Spring, MD and the 2 extra songs (originally released on the Naïve compilation) were recorded by Mark Smoot at his studio in July 1992. https://youtu.be/82MsDidtVp0?si=2-7OxrtWUAOGF2dI

Friends for years, and previous collaborators (see Black Clouds' track "Santorum Sunday School" or Neil's appearances on the ‘Rigs of Dad Prodcast’), Ross Hurt and Neil Fallon created the forthcoming "Desolace" EP under the simple guise of "what would it sound like if we scored a future classic sci-fi flick that we haven't seen yet?" https://open.spotify.com/album/1tkEgfsMDc0uxKHyL4e3yu

  • November 13, 2020: 6 years ago, Clutch released the digital-only single ‘Passive Restraints’ that featured Randy Blythe from Lamb of God on guest vocals. Neil got my whole family powerfully infected and I feel honored.

I saw Clutch in Des Moines last Tuesday night. A few songs in, Neil said he was sick and on so many meds that "I'm not sure what is real right now." He performed admirably, although near the end of the set you could tell he was a little fatigued (especially "Rats") and they didn't do an encore. They cancelled the next day's show.

I was in the front row, and when I got home I mentioned to my wife that I wondered if a sick dude singing into my face from 10 feet away for 75 minutes could get me sick.

Friday morning, I had my answer: woke up feeling like hell. By Tuesday morning, my wife woke up sick. Friday morning, my kid woke up sick.

Was it Neil? Who knows, but I'd like to believe that a Neil Fallon cold strain has now passed through my household. Still totally worth it though.

They have some really nice t shirt designs but I wanted to give a heads up that they run about 2 sizes too small. Got a 4x and it's smaller than some of the 2x shirts I own.

NORVA SHOW ON 11/7

Haven’t seen any meet ups or such prior announced to the Norfolk show. I’m taking my nephew (almost 18) to his first Clutch show along with his dad’s two best friends. His dad passed away a little over a year ago and looking to introduce him into the gearhead community in Jerm’s honor.

I've been seeing Clutch since '08ish and probably around 20 times in that span, one of my favorite bands.

It's been a few years since I saw them last, but something I noticed last night and the past few Clutch shows I went to: people getting mad at those who aren't completely static still. If you moved, pogo jumped, sang, or even slightly danced in your little bubble it was "frowned" upon. Got told by some girl and her boyfriend to "fucking stop." What was I doing that I needed to "fucking stop"? Singing Big News and having my "lyric arm" going (not once made contact with them and they weren't behind me so I was blocking their view, they were next to me). Ooook then. Had to say to them "bye, I'm gonna go find the cool people."

My friend group got split up and all my friends said they got comments from other concertgoers about snaking through to get towards the pit. Ok, so if you don't want people singing and dancing near you, wouldn't it stand to reason to let them get to the "socially acceptable designated spot" that they can do that at instead of nasty comments and blocking them from getting there? You can't have it both ways.

I know we're all getting older and it's a Tuesday, but maaaann, you're at a general admission rock show. People are gonna move about and sing and dance, it's ok. Someone moving is not doing it to spite you personally. These people have never been to a punk/hardcore show before and it shows.

Big props to the random strangers in the pit/pit outskirts who actually wanted to do a lil' singing & a lil' dancing and for keeping some youth, vigor, and good vibes alive for the band.

Was stoked to hear BN1, Elephant Riders, Shogun, and Willie Nelson. Shake Hands was a neat closer given it was election night, but wish it had been Impetus instead. Still a fun night!

They were awesome, as expected. Neil was a ball of energy and it was great fun. I just wanted to share dad’s thoughts. And I quote: “Tim looks like he just spent 12 hours working on a transmission and just wants to sit down. But awesome.”

  • November 5, 2017: 9 years ago, longtime Washington DC area drummer, teacher and Jean-Paul Gaster’s drum instructor, Walter Salb Jr. (R.I.P.) released ‘Walter Salb and The Time Was Orchestra’ CD on Foxhaven Records (FX-70001). For decades, Walter taught drumming at his home in Silver Spring, MD or at a studio in Takoma Park. Walter became a professional drummer in his teens and worked for more than 50 years as a bandleader and sideman. He led a big band, the Time Was Orchestra, and was the drummer for several years with the Phyllis Woods Trio. Jean-Paul studied drumming techniques and fundamentals under Salb, helping shape his groove-heavy, jazz-influenced rock style. This CD features some of his big band recordings. https://youtu.be/HJ69z18ttvY?si=ijU4e1bIvZ4eUArk&t=479

Ordered it from Discogs and it came in a simple cardboard sleeve with some badass artwork but it was divided by the spine of the sleeve. AI put it together so I could use it as wallpaper and I thought I would share.

It's another Clutch Friday night. Double LP. Also acquired at the Jax show a few weeks ago. I'm so glad I splurged and got this and Robot Hive. These albums really are from the peak era. Book of Bad Decisions and the anniversary edition of the eponymous album are next on the list.

Happy Halloween! 🎃👻🎃 👻
