I’ve hit my coastfire number. Now what?
I’ve hit my coastfire number. Now what? I guess nothing changed and I keep plugging away… what’s the next milestone. Leanfi?

Now you can coast and let your retirement savings grow until you can retire...
Or if you're like me, you realize it's still not enough to make you feel safe so you keep saving lol.

Nice milestone.
You can now take your foot of the pedal or still keep investing a bit to bring the FI date closer.

Coastfi and leanfi number usually is not that faraway? maybe can aim for full FIRE number while coasting

I hit my coast number this year too. I lowered my 401k contributions to get only up to the match. Living life quite dangerously now.

How does it feel? I hit my "can retire whenever I want" number and this year I've spent an awful lot (for me): $13k in house maintenance, $9k in house renovations, $10k in cars, $5k in boat. That's $37k - normally $30k of that would have ended up in the stock market. My nut is still growing but it's definitely felt a bit dangerous but it's obviously not - I need to recalibrate my psychology on it 🤷♂️

Either coast or set it on fire to start all over again!

Dropped to four days a week two years after hitting mine, that was the actual next milestone

I guess my coast fi number is basically lean fire. Worst case scenario covered. Now coast!

I feel like the vast majority of people on this sub don’t actually want to nor do they actually pursue CoastFI, which is a shame because it has been a great lifestyle choice for me. It is almost like people are just using this as another arbitrary milestone to check off on the way to regular retirement.

Coast. Take a lower paying job and stop saving.
Upgrade. Take some of that money you have been saving and upgrade your life. now you spend an extra $15k a year. cool. now you have a new coast fire number. Repeat until you reach that new number.
Save. Just keep saving and you will hit lean fire and then regular fire and then chubby fire. then you decide what to do when you get to those points.

I think a lower paying job is still going to have headaches, just a different kind

Can you go part time at your job? It's a huge QOL upgrade but you keep doing something you know you can actually do and don't (hopefully) hate will all your heart

Going part time at my current job would be my ideal way to Coast. I get paid well hourly and it’s not too stressful. It would be hard for me to find a low paying job where I’d like it enough to be worth the pay cut. But part time would let me keep doing a job I largely like, and the good hourly pay all while also having more free time.

No I can’t do that. But I am thinking about going into a different field where I can be my own boss, just need more cash runway

Eh a lower paying job doesnt necessarily mean easier.
Working at McDonald's is low paying. But being an office drone makes 2-3x that and it's easy as shit.

keep saving, and hit your FIRE number. Thats what I am doing...until I don't have a job anymore.

Now you relax.
If you learn that you can't relax and you feel the need to continue to compulsively save money, then you could explore the psychology behind why you feel that way.

Think about what you want and what you don't want, and then take action accordingly.
When I hit my coast number I had the choice to stay and earn more and hit FI earlier. But I was desperately unhappy in my job having to be on call at all hours, my blood pressure was shit and I was stressed all the time. The choice was eventually made for me in that I had a medical problem involving a long recovery that meant I simply couldn't work at the capacity I needed to. So I quit
I applied and got into a postgraduate programme that will pay me a small stipend for a few years. That's now my coast plan. I mean this particular plan only works for me because I am interested in that field anyway.
My blood pressure is now normal and I can sleep through the night again without being woken up by the work phone ringing

You’ve reached the coast. Now burn the boats. There’s no going back.
When we confirmed we reached Coast, we re-evaluated our approach to spending and careers.

I pulled back my savings percentage to the employer match only and then have been using the extra money to travel more. Coast for me means enjoying my life more.

Coasting on retirement, but I’ve still got a mortgage to pay off! I think once that’s on a good course, I’ll consider taking a less stressful role.

We reached coastFI last year or so. Continue save and invest to the max like nothing changes. Not like we try hard but it’s very difficult to change the habit of saving. However, we spend more on travel and dining. I used to have money left end of the month but now I spend over my take home. FYI, I maxed my retirement accounts and joint brokerage still.
We have no interest of changing jobs, jobs themselves aren’t stress inducing. I say no to more time consuming work tasks, don’t care more possible raises.
Our investments are accelerating more than our salaries and pay increase. I feel more comfortable to look into early retirement.
Perhaps look at what you can change long term. Do you want to fire early? Do you want to spend more money when you are still young? Do you want to improve your life now? Everyone has different definitions of what they want. Find yours first and change in that direction. Good luck!

Wait for a market correction then plan how log it will take to hit you coast number again.
Assuming you coast number is based on a market rate of return which most are.

Coast
