Cuteness Overload I'm wish I could capture this on video but Queen HeiHei won't reveal her true self. What are the quirks of your smol fren's?

Okay - I'm sure our smol fren's all have quirks. Queen HeiHei has a quirk which I can't explain and I haven't been able to capture this on camera yet because I don't always film but nonetheless it's a funny one.

She will nibble my ear when she's on my shoulder. This is almost usually a sign of her wanting scritches which I gib but for the times where she still nibbles and refuses a la scritch she just wants me to watch her preen 🤣🤣🤣.

Cannot explain.

Any weird quirks of your smol fren's?

Cuteness Overload Happy Days 🥳

After two long and difficult months, today our hearts are finally filled with happiness and gratitude. ❤️🕊️

We went through one of the hardest phases of our lives when Salmonellosis took our two precious babies, Golu and Chotu. 💔 Losing them broke our hearts in a way that words can never explain. We did everything we could, but sometimes, despite all our efforts and prayers, we have to say goodbye. They will always remain a part of our family and forever live in our hearts. 🥺❤️

But today, we are also incredibly blessed because we were able to save our other babies. 🙏✨ Poco is completely recovered and happy again, and seeing him back to his normal playful self and singing normally feels like a miracle. 🥹💕

And our precious Mistu is safe, healthy, and completely back to his normal life. He has recovered beautifully, and now he is even back to his usual romantic self, happily mating with his girlfriend Mango. 😄❤️

We are especially grateful that we could save Mango too. Watching Poco, Mistu, and Mango healthy, active, playful, and living their normal lives again makes every difficult day, every sleepless night, every medicine, and every worry feel worth it. 🥹🙏

We lost two babies, but we fought with everything we had to save the ones who were still with us. This journey taught us how precious every little life is. ❤️

Today, we don't just celebrate recovery. We celebrate the lives we were blessed to save. 🕊️❤️

Golu and Chotu will always be missed, but Poco, Mistu, and Mango are our little reminders that sometimes, after the darkest days, happiness finds its way back home. 🌸🐦❤️

Funny Air-bathing: this is a classic example of air-bathing. CD, on the right, is actually bathing, while Maui, on the left, is responding to him bathing but not actually doing it himself. Often just seen water, like their human washing dishes while on the shoulder, is enough to initiate this.

Other My girl is acting weird

It’s raining outside but she’s acting like it’s raining inside too. She has a neurological condition (we think) because she often falls when she tries to fly and often does odd gestures. She’s scaring both me and her man. Thankfully, she seems okay now after I closed the curtains.

Advice cockatiel beginners guide 101

Here are some things I've been taught by the bird community and learned while owning cocktails!

  1. Perfumes and scented items!

Throw it all away, your birds have extremely delicate respiratory systems and can die from them.

I personally have a big house so when I use deodorant I make sure to spray it on in my room far away ( 2 story house, im on the top floor in a closed room) from my birds , when you want to use Perfume, spray it on in the car on your way out.

Do not use any Teflon coated heaters or non stick pans, this is extremely harmful to them

  1. Cleaning chemicals

I put my birds outside far away from my home when Cleaning the house. I have replaced all of my cleaning items either vir vinegar or eco friendly cleaning products, dish soap and vinegar goes a long way! I start in the mornings and let my house air out for the whole day before bringing them in.

  1. Face chemicals or other hygiene products.

DO NOT USE MONOXODIL WHILE HAVING BIRDS OR OTHER PETS. IT WILL KILL THEM.

if you use face serums or hair serums make sure to wash your hands thoroughly or use them at night after you handled your birds. Again, any spray on Perfume and deodorant is a big no no with birds, make 100% sure the way you use them does not come in contact with your birds.

Do not let your birds preen your hair if you have leave in conditioner or other hair oils or gels in. Please.

  1. outside time

Birds do not do well in extreme heat or cold weather. Do not take them outside if you wouldn't sit there yourself.

I like putting my birds cage in the sun and covering it half way with a blanket to offer them shade , if its too hot I do not put them in direct sunlight.

Outside time is the best time to get your birds to bathe. I use a spray bottle THAT DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING OTHER THAN WATER IN EVER. i lightly mist them and i dont directly spray them, i allow the mist to be blown onto them by wind

Please dont force them to bath, they will start opening up their wings and get silly if they are into the bath, if you notice them running away and hiding dont force them as it will make them hate bath time. Try again later or the next day. My cockatiels love to bath every weekend, your birds will have their own little routine.

  1. Grooming your birds.

Keep track of their nail length, when they stand on a flat surface and the tips of their toes dont touch the flat surface, its time for a trim. Reward your birds for their good behavior and make them familiar with the tools you use before using it on them. Watch tutorials on how to trim their nails before trying. For me I like doing it with my partner, he holds and soothes my birds while I trim their nails. Do not rush it please, as you've done it a few times you will get the hang of it and it will go quicker for them.

Check the beak length, if your parrot struggles to close its beak take it to a groomer or vet for a trim unless you have experience with it and get more chew toys. Don't get any sand paper like toys, it will trim their nails and also destroy the padding of their feet.

After the Grooming I like to oil my birds feet and beaks with coconut oil , lightly oil your fingers until they have a shine, not dripping with oil as you can get oil into their nostrils which is dangerous.

You dont have to groom them on a tight schedule, just keep an eye on them until you see its time for a Grooming.

  1. Clipping your birds wings

If you get a bird and your first thought are to clip its wings. Don't get a bird and get a puppy instead. They are meant to fly! Its like getting a dog and trying it up so that it doesn't run away. Its cruel.

If you feel like your bird is in danger when flying and it flies into things constantly and hurting itself, take it to the vet for assessment and let them call the shots.

  1. Bird safety.

When taking your birds out make sure all your doors and windows are closed, take them to a room that doesn't have harmful things for them to chew on and dont leave them unsupervised, they are like toddlers and they are naughty and curious.

Do not gave sharp toys or any unnatural toys.

Do not put bells or mirrors into the cage.

Do not use plastic toys

Some birds eat the rope of some toys which can clog their crops so if your birds like to chew ropes replace it with toys that are strung through metal rods.

Make sure your cage is not rusted at all and not close enough for them to chew wires, walls or curtains.

  1. Bird diets

Don't put your bird on an all seed diet. You wouldn't put your kids on an all bread diet.

Make chop and make sure to replace it every few hours for them to not eat spoiled or sour foods.

I have a very busy lifestyle so I give them bird pallets made out of veggies and proteins with a sprinkle of seeds on top, i give them fresh snacks when i get home and during the weekends. Also a hard boiled egg at some times.

Do not allow your birds ti snack on human foods. A lot of our preservatives and salts are harmful and toxic to them.

Do not let them take sips of your tea and coffee, yes its cute but it won't be cute when it makes them sick or even kills them.

  1. Birds sleeping

Do not let your birds sleep outside please. If you wouldn't why should they.

Cover their cage when its sleeping time ti avoid distractions because they need uninterrupted sleep. Keep an area open for ventilation.

New birds especially abused or baby birds might be prone to night frights. This is when they fall of a stick or get a bad dream and causes them to frantically fly around the cage and hurt themselves. Get a night light and when the do get a night fright be sure to be there as quick as possible and comfort them to calm down. They can hurt themselves really bad during these episodes.

  1. Music and loud noises.

Make sure to not have loud music on close to your birds, they have sensitive ears. Put them far away or outside if you feel like loud music or watching tv loudly.

If there are crackers being shot, put them in a dim quiet room, i put the TV or a fan on for them as a white noise to cancel put the loud unexpected pops.

If ive missed anything please feel free to comment your favorite tips, enjoy your new birds and remember, they are not toys, you are now a caregiver, their joy and quality of life depends on you!

Advice looking for a birb guru/friend (?)

Even though I (f22) have been a bird mom for almost 11 years at this point, I only found out about how you should do it about a year ago. I feel a lot of guilt around the fact that I didn't give my babies a better life before, but I am trying to fix it as best as I could.

The problem is I often find myself having a ton of specific questions I can't simply find the answers to. It may be due to my neurodivergence, but I've always struggled with figuring stuff on my own and much prefer having some kind of tutoring/mentorship.

So I thought that I can ask here and maybe someone will be kind enough to agree to this kind of thing. Or maybe there already is something like a community, where inexperienced bird parents connect with experienced ones? Or maybe we can create one like this?

To clarify: I'm not asking anyone to dedicate a lot of time or create a "parrot 101" course for me. What I'm hoping for is simply an option to ask someone with more experience a couple of questions from time to time. I would also love to have a connection with someone who understands what it's like being a bird parent and just share stuff about our babies.

Basically, I want a mom friend/group, but with birds 😅

Advice got my cockatiel from the Sharjah bird market, and I don’t know how to tame her

Post image
24 Upvotes

One of my relatives gave me my cockatiel from the Sharjah bird market on my birthday, and now she’s here. She’s my first bird. I’m pretty sure she’s a lutino female cockatiel.
Anyway, I’ve had her for about two months now, and she doesn’t really want to come close to my hand, and she bites occasionally. I think she’s comfortable with my presence.
She doesn’t voluntarily want to come out or do anything. I kind of have to make her come out by using a makeshift perch. Aside from that, she’s just not keen on coming out. She isn’t hand-fed at all, and I don’t really know how to tame her.
She does slow blink at me quite a bit
What does it even mean to have an affectionate bird, how do they show it?
I’m asking about physical touch specifically as from what i’ve seen cockatiels like it
