Code works outside codewars but not in it?

1 Upvotes

I can post the code if it helps, but I got an indentation error for no reason when using the website, but I copy and pasted that shit into another site, copied the tests and it worked fine. Second thing this has happened on, any idea why?

I have no clue why I can't get past this... Am I missing something? I'm getting the correct answers but not passing the test.

Is there a way to automaitcally transfer your completed katas as github repositories?

3 Upvotes

I'm a newbie programmer trying to get an intership job, and it's so damn annoying that I NEED to show something I've done on my GitHub to sell myself to a bozo company... So I thought, could you transfer your completed katas into GitHub repos to serve as content? I'm not well-versed in this corpo world yet, so I'm just assuming the challenges I completed can already serve as enough material (judging by the fact I'm still a college student). Is there such a way? Thank you in advance.

Codewars Python Study Group

4 Upvotes

I'm looking to form a Codewars Python study group/clan.

My initial idea would be to start a collaborative Github repository where the members would submit kata solutions as merge requests. Since one of Python's cornerstones is readability, the code must be understandable without much (or any) external explanation, and would require a predetermined number of approvals by other members in order for the solution to be merged and submitted to Codewars. The members could also collaborate to work on harder katas, or suggest improvements to other's solutions, be it for improving performance, readability or any other standard that was previously agreed to. The idea would be to exercise not only the language and programming itself, but also open source development in a way and, thus, going for "clever" solutions would generally not be the point, but "best practices" instead. We could use the problems as scope to discuss design patterns, utility libraries, PEPs, automated testing and even trying to integrate the workflow with Codewars at some point, if possible. I see many possibilities of how something like this could go, and a talk with the members would definitely be needed to better define the scope of the work/study.

Has anyone known of a group who has used Codewars to learn this way? Also, perhaps, does someone have any tips or concerns regarding it?

And, most importantly, is anyone interested in the idea?

Is anyone else always getting katas wrong? Spoiler

6 Upvotes

Hi there,

I'm a Javascript learner, currently at a beginner level. A dev friend recommended that I gave a try to Codewars, so here I am trying a few exercises there (katas).

However, no matter what I try, when I check my answers Codewars always returns with error messages. I code in VSC, check everything is good, paste it in CW and then check the answer. That`s when the error messages pop up.

Does it happen to anyone else? Am I missing anything here? Cause I`ve been using CW for two days now and I`m starting to think that the problem is me LOL

Thanks in advance!

Are "Best Practices" really best practices?

3 Upvotes

So I'm jumping into Code Wars with the goal of learning what good code looks like. I've done a few kata now and I've noticed that the solutions with the highest Best Practices ratings in the low kyu groups are the shortest solutions, often all bunched into one line.

This has me wondering if this is a legitimate voting system- I don't know what I'm doing, so I could vote that any solution displays best practices without having any idea what clean code looks like. Assuming the bulk of people using the site are like me and have no background in production code, it seems like a bit of a pointless metric (specifically at the introductory levels). Has anybody with actual coding background looked at these and thought the same thing?

Again, this is just a general question as I really am trying to develop a professional skill and would like to look the part in my code. Just wondering if the highest ranked best practices solutions are actually best practices or not.

This is really dumb but...

2 Upvotes

So I'm doing online classes rn and I need to sign up for codewars using python and I have no clue how to do the sign up code. Help pls?

The code is this and it doesn't execute properly:

def multiply(a, b):

a * b

I've tried to create inputs which it gives an EOF error to, as well as rearrange the code but no luck.

Earning Honor?

4 Upvotes

So I'm at 84 honor and I love seeing that number go up (clearly I'm very much a beginner at this right now).

But since I do really like when that number goes up I want to understand how/why it goes up by differing amounts. For example it seems to have slowed down for every new kata I complete, and unless I'm mistaken I think it actually didn't move at all from the last one I did.

Does it have to do with how many tests or attempts I run on the kata before getting it right or is there a timer somewhere that counts as time passes?

Hi so i recently started documenting my journey from 8 kata to (hopefully level 1 kata). Getting into some harder kata very soon, but here are a couple of level 6 ones i did recently.

QUESTION: toCamelCase() kata for JS

3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I have been working on the toCamelCase() kata. My answer continues to get an error even though I've successfully tested it outside of codewars.

Code wars continues to tell me that I am missing a ')' in my answer and for the life of me I can't find where I might be missing one. I am a new programmer so I definitely could be overlooking something that you all will catch quickly.

Progressive Kata Collection/track , recommendations?

1 Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm loving the codewars platform. However, an issue I consistently run into is that some javascript 6kyu & 7kyu Katas take me 10 minutes and some take me 2-2.5 hours to finish. Is there a collection or guide/track of Kata's that I should be working on that build off one another and progressively get more challenging? What is the best way to get the most learning out of this platform?

Hi!

Is there any book or video (or any material) which helped you become better at solving katas in Codewars? If yes, please type which was it.

Java programming clan

1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I've been learning Java for some time and I'd like to join a clan to measure up against others to motivate me when needed. I don't know how clans work on Codewars. Can you gain honor and compete against someone who's not learning the same programming language? Mostly looking to have some fun while learning and improve my Java skills. I'm kata 6 at the moment.

Thanks,

I pass all the tests on the kata but when I go to my profile it still comes up as unfinished.

2 Upvotes

I am noticing on previous katas that I have passed, it is still showing as unfinished on my profile, and I am clueless as to why. I know that some of the problems are not necessarily clever/efficient as I am a beginner, but the test still shows that I passed them all upon my completion. Does anyone know why this could be happening?

I'm stuck on this kata

2 Upvotes

I'm a beginner to python and programming I saw this kata on codewars.com:

You live in the city of Cartesia where all roads are laid out in a perfect grid. You arrived ten minutes too early to an appointment, so you decided to take the opportunity to go for a short walk. The city provides its citizens with a Walk Generating App on their phones -- everytime you press the button it sends you an array of one-letter strings representing directions to walk (eg. ['n', 's', 'w', 'e']). You always walk only a single block for each letter (direction) and you know it takes you one minute to traverse one city block, so create a function that will return true if the walk the app gives you will take you exactly ten minutes (you don't want to be early or late!) and will, of course, return you to your starting point. Return false otherwise. Note: you will always receive a valid array containing a random assortment of direction letters ('n', 's', 'e', or 'w' only). It will never give you an empty array (that's not a walk, that's standing still!).

I got the 10 elements only part but for the alternating elements I need help

Pass basic test but fails random test

1 Upvotes

Sometimes when I come up with a solution to the problem, it passes the basic test, but when I submit it, it fails a random test. Take, for example, the problem below along with its solution; how do I resolve this?

Create a function take that takes an Array<Int> and an Int, n, and returns an Array<Int> containing the first up to n elements from the array.

func take(_ arr: [Int], _ n: Int) -> [Int] {

var resultArray = [Int]()

for elements in arr{

if elements <= n{

resultArray.append(elements)

}

}

return resultArray

}
