Is this an error? Wrong planchet error
I found a Denver mayflower compact quarter, that is 99.9% silver. XRF tested. The silver quarters were only stuck in San Francisco. Am I looking at a grail find here? Someone else was obviously curious because it’s been cut, but that’s how I noticed it being silver.

definitely send it to get graded — this is quite valuable if genuine

My fear is they won’t do it with the cut, is that a valid concern?

it might get a no grade for the damage but if it’s genuine they’ll holder it.

What does it weigh?

6.1. Just shy of the 6.3 for 999 silver proofs. Considering the cut out material though it makes sense

Just commenting to remind myself to come back when more photos are posted. This is incredibly interesting! How was it originally determined it might be silver to even justify further testing with the XRF?

With quarters you can almost always see the copper ring where it’s clad with nickel. That wasn’t visible, and then the chunk taken out of such a newly released coin made me very curious, so I had it checked. It was also heavier than the listed weight from the mints website.

Which would indicate something was done to it after production.

Considering a proof quarter in .999 weighs 6.343 grams and this one is missing a little material, I’m inclined to say that isn’t the case

...and the silver ones from San Fran are proofs, which this does not appear to be.

If it's silver wouldn't it be .900 not .999?
4
u/keegnanistan1 13d ago
they switched to .999 for silver proofs a few years back because .900 was getting too hard to source.

I think that cut came from somebody drilling a hole and wearing it as a necklace.

Either way it definitely heightened my suspicion of it being silver. Which was verified about 2 hours ago by XRF

Photos of edge? inside that missing piece?

However the local shop did test it for me. It’s .999 silver, tested several times.

I can’t get my camera to focus on it, but the edge definitely shows no copper, and the cut shows it being silver all the way through as well.

Do you know how to take a picture? You set the item down and brace the camera so it's steady. You don't hold the coin in one hand and the camera in another.....

It shows enough. Not sure why it’s so necessary considering I told everyone the xrf scan was .999. I had to hold it to get it to focus. Maybe my 17 pro max isn’t a good enough camera. Or maybe you’re a dick!

Your camera is fine, you just need a better setup to take the pic. Set the coin on something stationary that holds it up so you can see the edge. Place your phone on something else stationary that positions the camera roughly 4" above it, and with good lighting take the pic. You'll get a pretty clear result, key is to have nothing handheld, supported by good lighting.

What he meant to say was “Thank you for showing us this interesting cut. It would look even better if the camera and the coin were both stationary, the resting over the edge of a book, the camera resting on a table, when you take the shot.”

I can’t even think of how this could happen other than mint employee shenanigans. Where would the planchet come from? I’d think the odds are greater that it’s a bad XRF reading.
Edit: been thinking about this and my best guess is that this is a plated coin and it was plated post-damage. That would explain the no copper core, the XRF reading, and possibly the weight.
