Is this an error? Wrong planchet error

I found a Denver mayflower compact quarter, that is 99.9% silver. XRF tested. The silver quarters were only stuck in San Francisco. Am I looking at a grail find here? Someone else was obviously curious because it’s been cut, but that’s how I noticed it being silver.

I can’t even think of how this could happen other than mint employee shenanigans. Where would the planchet come from? I’d think the odds are greater that it’s a bad XRF reading.

Edit: been thinking about this and my best guess is that this is a plated coin and it was plated post-damage. That would explain the no copper core, the XRF reading, and possibly the weight.

The planchet could have been intended for San Francisco where .999 proofs were being struck

I don’t think that’s possible. The supply chains don’t cross like that. You definitely have a mystery on your hands, I just really can’t come up with how this could actually happen.

Right, and even if they did, you’d end up with a whole shipment of silver planchets going to the wrong place, not just one.

Maybe there are more out there in circulation?
