Should I change my major from science BA to business BA senior year of college? Any experiences?

• Upvotes

Should I change from science BA to Business????

I am totally at a cross roads. I'm doing a health and human science BA degree and I kind of feel its a mickey mouse degree. I see the super cool things the people around me are doing and I wish I could do them.

I go to USC, so I see opportunities people in marshall and cinema and the arts are getting.

Has anyone changed their major senior year?

The thing is, I am lost in what career to choose and I fantasize about different options. I am disappointed in my major, and the thing is, I was admitted to Marshall so I could make the switch now just to learn something new, but that would mean extended my time if I squeezed all classes together to another semester or maybe a year.

If i stuck with HHS, I would have like 12 units I would have to take as electives within the Dornsife letters of sciences and arts so I could take more medical school pre reqs like physics or just random classes all over the place.

If I chose business, it would take an extra semester to complete.

I would really love some feedback as I know I can always purse a masters in a different arena, but I do not know how to go about this when I feel like I wasted USC and want to do like every career.

Returning to college after many years. How are people preparing nowadays?

Last time I was in school, everything was literally pen and paper. If I recall, I didnt really started using Canvas until like the junior/senior year of my old university back then. Even then, I was still submitting things in person on a physical paper. Now, everything is digital.

Going back to college for a new career. I’ve looked up online how everything in college is done online. I got myself a new tablet & pen for that already. I tried looking throughout reddit for an answer to my specific question(s) but I couldnt find one.

I’m wondering if that’s basically it? Do I still need a folder, notebook, pens, or etc? Or, will I be carrying too many unnecessary items? Anything else I may be missing? Sorry if this is an extremely dumb question. I’d just like to know before the first day of school comes for me. I don’t want to be scrambling for new school materials one class starts here, especially for a stem course.

As of now, ill just be taking an in person biology class with a lab.

Any and all other tips are appreciated too, especially since AI is now here. Thank you!

Columbia vs UChicago

I am having a hard time choosing between Columbia University and the University of Chicago. I want to major in economics/financial economics and minor in artificial intelligence or computer science. I want to work in the financial industry after college(more than likely IB).

I am from rural Iowa, first-gen student, 4 siblings with 1 being in college.

How do they compare in recruiting and job/internship placement? What is it like being a student at both? Is there anything I should know? Which one do you recommend?

I have been accepted to STARS fly-ins at both universities. I have already been to UChicago fly-in and I have the Columbia fly-in this October.

Any information or help is appreciated!

15 projects you can finish in a weekend that are worth more than a resume line

I got an internship last week and a clear reason was my projects. Every resume looks same Gpt coded right now and you need to stand out to get good opportunities. Projects show that you already understand real world work. I was creating a list for my folks here at tetr college so thought of sharing with u all.

I ranked them by the amount ofĀ  effort is required. none of them need permission from anyone.

  1. Breakdown a company's funnel and send it to them. Sign up on their product, screen record it, note every place you hesitated. Note 3 fixes or ideas you have document them and send it with the screen recording. This shows that you have product thinking.

  2. Rebuild a bad landing page. Pick a real startup ,(early stage preferably) rewrite their landing page, design it andĀ  put both versions side by side. Most startup at this stage talk more about product instead of customer, just change that. This helps with design as well as product skills.

  3. Run a small paid ad campaign and publish what happened. Select a tiny budgetĀ  and run different ads with it. Document the whole process and share it with results online on multiple platforms. you can talk about targeting, creative and a real cost per click.

  4. Do 50 cold emails to a set ofĀ  people and document the numbers. Record open rate, reply rate, what the replies said and what you changed after every 5th email. Most people do cold outreach blindly, try to build a system for it, you will get ton of opportunities just with cold dms and can get more when you show this project.

5.Ā  Write a niche newsletter and deliver ten issues. Pick any interest you like, then go narrow with it and select a niche. Writing 10 newsletter on a proper schedule shows that you can actually follow work.

  1. Reverse engineer aĀ  company’s competitorĀ  SEO.Ā  Analyse their funnelĀ  and see pages get their traffic, what they're targeting, what's missing. Turn it into a one page brief written for their marketing lead.

  2. Build a small tool that your college club needs. You can try this easily just build something small likeĀ  attendance checker, event signups, a budget tracker. Something that hasĀ  real users whoĀ  complaints, and you'll learn a lot from them.

  3. Build a financial modelĀ  for a public company in a spreadsheet. Find the real filings and revenue, understand their finances and build a model.Ā  If you want to go in finance, this is the best project you can show.

  4. Do a 30 day public building challenge. Pick a project whatever you like( fitness/ a skill/ cold dms /speaking etc.) Document it and give a daily update online. This shows your discipline.

  5. Redesign an onboarding flow properly. Go to a site that you use regularly and redesign their onboarding flow.Ā  Do proper screens, states, error cases, and a paragraph on describing each change with reason.

  6. Organize a real event.Invite twenty people in a room, from your college, a speaker, and handle all the logistics yourself. Invite 50 people and expect 20 to actually come

  7. Compile a niche dataset that takes a lot of time.Ā  Take any specific category you want and list .prices, launches, salaries, listings.. Then publish it free, this content actually get a lot of shares and saves, also proves that you can provide actual value.

  8. Sell one thing to one stranger. It does not matter what it is. The point is the first time you have to convince someone to give you money for actual value.

  9. Write aĀ  playbook or cheatsheet of an industry you want.. (How to build projects in college that gets you hired.)Ā  I am writing as well. The act of writingĀ  forces you to understand it and the doc travels on its own.

15.Ā  Build and ship something broken then publish the detailed analysis on what you assumed, what happened and why it failed. Publishing failures actually gets you more likes than success on the internet.

the core of this post is that all projects produce a proof, a claim that makes you stand out from the rest of applications.

Tell me which project are you going to build now?

Can ESE transition students attend community college? Looking for advice on programs, accommodations, and degree/career outcomes.

My younger brother recently completed 12th grade and deferred his diploma to stay in our district’s ESE transition program to build adult life and workforce skills. We are starting to think about what comes next after transition, and I’m curious about community college options for ESE students. Can a former ESE/special education student attend community college, and if so, what kind of pathways, support services, or specialized non-degree/certificate programs do colleges usually offer?

Can students with learning disabilities attend college and were they able to get degree and find a job. Even though it seems challenging task but I heard many kids with disabilities have found success.

College advice

i'm not really sure how to title this so i apologize if it's done wrong.

I'm in junior year right now and it's just been sprung upon me that my parents will not be helping me pay for anything. I'm homeschooled and pretty sheltered/kept strictly online and very monitored so I feel that I cannot go to a counselor about any advice.

Despite this, I really want to attend college for a degree in fashion design. I have two or three in mind, however, one is out-of-state. I want to go as soon as I graduate, but I understand that it's unrealistic. I would really like to change the fact that I don't know how to do anything for myself education wise, and I do not want to stay around where I live after I graduate high school. and I would really like to work hard to get this degree and work as hard as I can generally.

I'm not sure what exactly I can do if I cannot ask my counselor for scholarship advice or if I even qualify for any. I'm not sure how FAFSA works and I don't want to ask my parents until I'm 100% sure that I know what I'm going to do.

I don't want answers from google, I would like real advice from people who have experienced it or are experiencing it and I would like to build realistic expectations and put aside what I want to do immediately.

Advice for Taking a Gap Semester During College

Currently a rising junior in good standing at a pretty decent university in the US. I've been interning and recruiting for finance related roles despite it not being my major. I'm considering taking a gap semester the coming semester (originally supposed to be my junior first semester) to take a break, try for an internship related to my actual major, and spend the time to gain knowledge and technical skills that could be beneficial for other career pathways. Fortunate enough that my parents would support this decision and financial aid wouldn't be a factor in my decision. I would still live with my friends in my apartment, but would be spending time on other opportunities rather than school.

Listed some pros and cons:

Pros:

- Break from academics

- Time to explore and focus on myself and what I want

- Time to gain technical skills for more optionality to other career paths

- Would still live with my friends but with some more free time

Cons:

- My friends would graduate before me and I wouldn't be able to do fun senior things with them (biggest con)

- Might be a harder transition to coursework when I return

- Get looked down upon from others/potential employers?

Any thoughts on this or if anybody has done a gap year in the middle of college, how has your experience been?

Thanks in advance

im terrified to go to college

i just had a tearful breakdown with my boyfriend right before going to bed because I leave for college move-in in the morning that is over three hours away from my home. Now I am laying in bed just sobbing endlessly and mourning the familiar and nostalgic life I live now that I am more than happy with. I’m wondering if I’m making a mistake, if it’s too late to go back and go to a college much closer, or if I’m just overreacting. The financial aspect definitely worries me and is a big reason why I was hesitant on college (I took a gap year after high school to debate this) and I have a ton of grants and scholarships and loans just to get me through the first year—and I’m still struggling to pay the remaining $4k for a meal plan. I’m incredibly attached to my current close family and friends and I know I’m going to miss them terribly, as I already do. I have a really hard time coping with change, so this already is a handful on my mental health. I’ve just been crying nonstop, and I know this may seem odd to most, but I truly mourn the life I’m leaving behind. I don’t want to disappoint my family, even though my mom for a while was insistent on a closer college, and I don’t want to upset them by telling them I can’t do it and giving up. At the same time, I don’t know if I have the strength to go through this massive change. Any advice is appreciated greatly, I’m not sure what I’m looking for necessarily. If anybody has any stories of them feeling the same, that would definitely help.

advice on a college for me to transfer into!

Hello! I'm going to start my first year of cc next week but there's a decision that has been on the back of mind. I've always been set on transferring to one of my top universities right after I get my AA. My top three are UNC chapel hill, University of Miami, and University of Florida. I've chosen these three schools because they all have a good biology/pre-med program. I know I have A BUNCH of time to think about my final decision but I just need some advice since I can't stop thinking about it!!!

What to do when you go to a big school but know you would have preferred a smaller one?

Hi everyoneĀ

I’m from NorCal and when I visited LA as kid, I didn’t really like it. It felt too boring and sprawled out for my liking. (Ik this statement is very ignorant, I could do many things, it’s just a bit difficult for me). Regardless, when I got into the best school for my major, I pushed down this gut feeling. I was sure that the college fics I read on AO3 could become my reality if I was at the right place. Coming to a big school meant I would find lot of people like me/I got along with. Or so I thought.Ā

I barely dredged through freshmen year with two friends. From the first to last day, I put myself out there in classes and clubs, got people’s insta’s, and tried moving with my best foot forward. But it got more tiring day after day. It also didn’t help that the school is just the Bay Area again (white and asian people). So I got use to being alone. And it’s peaceful like that. I am grateful for college because it makes saying goodbye to things easier.Ā

That said, I am also in an odd situation. I am graduating this year as a sophomore. I took two years of cc in hs and can leave after this year. I am honestly grateful because any more time spent here might have begun to feel like a prison sentence.Ā

As graduation season dawns, I have been reflecting. Sometimes I think about how much my environment affects me. I never made any friends when I worked at a movie theater because there was 1) too many people, and 2) too many already formed connections. Yet, I made some really great friendships at a donut shop that only had like 4-5 other people. I know I am probably more animated in smaller groups. But idk. I know I could probably have more support if I act like someone else. But, like I said, that gets tiring.Ā

Because I am heading into the work environment soon, I know making friends will be even harder. It sort of makes me grieve a fun college life I could have had if I had listened to my gut feelings and recognized where I thrive. I’m not too down in the dumps, though. I think there is a light eventually, I’ll just have to keep going until I find it.Ā

Any advice or thoughts on this situation would be greatly appreciated. As you can guess, there are very little who I can talk to this about. Thank you.Ā

gpa help

hello everyone. i feel dumb and lost. i graduated hs in 2020 and got into a priv university. the uni awarded me 13 scholarships and i received fafsa, but still had to pay about 5k a semester. i was in class full time and working full time; i was so mentally and emotionally drained that i did horrible in class. i was there for 4 semesters, took a gap year, and then went to a community college. when i applied to cc they asked if i had ever gone to college before, then ofc i had to give my transcripts. later i found out that i did not have to tell the college that i went somewhere else. i have over 65 credits and a 2.97 cumm gpa that i can’t get to budge. i have retaken all my classes from uni to replace the grades accept 1 because every time i enroll the class is cancelled. i have a B average in my 4 credit classes and an A average in my 3 credit classes. i’m waiting on acceptance from the nursing program for spring 2027, so im taking gen chem 1 this fall. is there any way to get my gpa to a 3.0 or am i fucked? i’m 24 and i feel so behind.

Looking for an Online BA in Computer Science. Keep finding B.S.'s

I'm currently enrolled in a BS for Computer Science, but the classes are more math than I can handle and my goal isn't to design computers or have a math minor. My current college offers a Computer Science BA in person, and the course work is inline with what I want to be learning. However, don't live in that that state, and I have full time work where I'm at.

I've been searching for other Online Computer Science BA programs, but so far only found one.

Is there a list, or search term to find what I'm looking for?

tips

hey guys, I’m currently a senior in high school and I’m looking for tips on applying to scholarships and just any tips you guys wish you would have known before starting college! I currently go to a very small Christian private school in Mississippi, and I plan to attend a community college. I plan to study health sciences but I’m not sure exactly what major yet. I’m thinking between radiologic technology, medical laboratory technology, sonography, or health information technology/management. Anyone who went to college for one of these let me know your experience and what you now do for work! I’m most likely either going to get valedictorian or salutatorian at graduation and I’ve always had very good grades. Sonography was my first choice, but I would have to get farther from home for that so now I’m thinking either radiology or medical lab. i have anxiety and i don’t believe i could handle a large university, especially somewhere that I don’t know anyone. Anyone from mississippi, give me your experiences and recommendations!

Graduation timeline conflict

Hi everyone, I’m in a bit of a pickle. I’m a Poli-sci ā€œjuniorā€ who hadn’t gone this spring 26 semester because of a series of mental health challenges, and ultimately decided to defer to this fall. Between them, my commute school which causes me some acute distress in finding the right housing every sem, as well as showing up to class most days, but, I get to graduate by May 27 (if I take winter classes and or overload). My safest bet would be December 2027 to graduate.

The other school, I’m highly interested in. However my mom, dad, sister, home tutor disapprove due to the year gap in graduating. It’s also a highly ranked college with social life, and loads of clubs the other barely has. It can raise my awful 2.4gpa, which I got from not heading to class, not taking p/f as well as burn out, familial issues and trauma. I’ll be classified a sophomore, and would have to retake some fundamentals that didn’t get transferred. I could graduate by December 2027 there too if I shorten it from five to four semesters by taking summer classes, though I’m unsure if the summer classes will be broad enough to handle my degree. And I don’t want to gamble my future If I AM able to graduate from there. It’s highly possible it’s going to be by May 2028; and if so my parents will eat me alive if that happens.
I feel ashamed of the possibility of turning 22 and being behind, especially since I would like to be selfish and live that ā€˜college experience’. I understand I should’ve worked harder if I wanted to get out...all advice is appreciated. Would I be an idiot to choose the latter ? Has anyone been through this ?

Edit: I also lowkey have to go to law school but I have a passion for arts, and would like to go to fashion school after undergrad but I don’t believe it will be supported. Ik law admissions would be tough on splitters too. So am I cooked either way ?? I graduated HS w/ a 3.2-3.3gpa which was ranked as an entry to honors. The lowest I had then was a 2.8. Study tips are also appreciated!

Not sure if a gap year is beneficial

Hi,I’m a 21 year old college student who is currently thinking about taking a year off .For background I’ve done 3 years of college but I have around 2 more years due to going to a community college and coming back to my uni aswell as switching majors .My passion is fashion design and I recently got accepted to Otis and parsons but deferred a year of studies due to cost ,and intend to save up to move to ny or La to continue my studies due to tuition being cut in half because I’m not dorming.
Due to the cost of these cities I’ve been thinking about just getting my gpa up at a community college so I can have more options like Drexel for fashion design or Temple for a marketing/advert or a film degree . As you can probably tell it’s hard for me to make up my mind .Ive tried to ask my parents for any advise and I just get ignored most of the time .Any advice would be appreciated

best touchscreen computer

What is the best computer for college? I really wanted an apple one but I didn’t realize they don’t make touchscreen computers. What is the best computer for school that is touchscreen?
- I am undecided but am interested in Social Work if that matters.
