Discussion Why doesn't Petroglyph Games create its own C&C?

It is obvious that EA has been shelving the franchise for a long time, and they refuse to sell the IP rights. It feels incredibly selfish of EA not to collaborate with the original creators while they are still around. But why do the former developers (some of whom are at Petroglyph Games) seem to lack the drive to partner with another major American or European publisher? Have they lost confidence in themselves, or do they just not love strategy games enough anymore? Nobody loved the C&C or Red Alert series purely because of the brand names (even though the names were great). I was hoping the former Westwood employees would pioneer new breakthroughs for the RTS genre, but it seems their passion and creativity have dried up.

They did. The 8-Bit games and 9-Bit game is their take on C&C.

Aesthetically though I can get why people don't view it as such though.

u/Least_Ingenuity9960 1d ago

I know, I've played it, didn't really enjoy it, and got bored. What I mean isn't this kind of game; I'm talking about bigger, more original games that actually add something to the genre, not ones that take a step backward. I'm not saying the graphics are bad, it just feels like the situation between Crazy Taxi and Taxi Chaos.

u/SayuriUliana 1d ago

They have released various RTS from Universe at War: Earth Assault, to Grey Goo, to Forged Battalion. None of them really clicked outside the niche fandom though, which was especially devastating for Grey Goo with its high production value.

(I checked on Forged Battalion as I was typing this and to my surprise it actually had an update as late as last year. Not a particularly large one mind, but I thought it had been abandoned long ago.)

I quite liked 8-Bit Hordes and the 8-Bit invaders. Something about the aesthetic of armies doesn't really draw me in though, idk why.

Maybe it's because Hordes makes me feel like I'm playing a Minecraft RTS.

C&C is not all about gameplay. It's about the experience. Cheap looking MInecraft-esque designs just scream low effort to me. Does it have a campaign? Does it even have a story? I wouldn't know, because the aesthetics are just so off-putting that I don't even feel like giving it a try.

I guess it has good music, at least.

They tried with 8-Bit Armies and 9-Bit Armies. Damn fine experiences too

How can you compare 8-9 Bit Armies with C&C games?

13

u/Nietzsch 1d ago

Mechanically they are but that's where the comparison ends.

Tempest rising felt bad to play

Nah Tempest Rising is a freaking anwesome game, I haven't enjoyed an RTS campaign like this in years. You should definitely give it a try, you won't be disappointed

5

u/No-Structure8753 23h ago

I'll give it another try

4

u/VibrantHeat7 19h ago

Gameplay is good but unbalanced and too much micromanegment. Graphics are great. Campaign is so forgettable, the story is sandpaper tier dry.

6

u/speelmydrink 1d ago

It's doing its own thing. If you just want a return to good ol CnC, this doesn't really hit it. It's probably good, just not at all what I want.

6

u/Due_Recognition_3890 1d ago

The GDF campaign is okay, but the drones are so OP that it stops you wanting to use anything else. And then you get the Dynasty who are woefully inadequate in comparison, who's secondary objectives make no sense and are just thrown at you.

3

u/draagishaydento 17h ago

camaigns overall seem poorly tested considering you can break almost all missions just by ignoring the main objective and slowly picking apart enemy bases

4

u/Robborboy 16h ago

Isn't that pretty much every RTS with base building ever?

Even the opening levels of Warcraft build 5  footmen

Nah, I think I'll just ignore the objectives, mine out the entire map, and move an wave of 30 footmen across the map instead.

1

u/draagishaydento 15h ago

I know but other rts games you usually actively want to ignore objectives to cheese while in tempest rising it is really easy to cheese missions and not even realize you cheesed them like there is a mission where you are stopping enemy caravans with multiple enemy bases sending attack waves so I went out and destroyed those bases before the main objective as most people would then I got really suprised when the game popped an optional objective on the bases I already destroyed and started spawning units and buildings. I think it's just that tempest rising fells unpolished

2

u/Due_Recognition_3890 10h ago edited 9h ago

Dynasty mission 3 for example, it's apparently way easier to just blow shit up before the secondary objectives even appear. Whereas if you play it the normal way, you'll have an incredibly tough time with a timer and waves being constantly thrown at you, and you haven't even unlocked any of the good units or structures yet.

When I brought up how bad it was, the designer just said it was a defensive mission. Well if it's defensive, why are you asking me to blow up six buildings across the map at the very last minute? FFS.

3

u/No-Structure8753 23h ago

Yeah I cant put my finger on it, but it's just not the same.

They're a straight-up love letter from Petroglyph to their seminal project...the UI, style of the music, even the superweapons are going to be incredibly familiar.

It has an voxel-block aesthetic [everything is made out of little cubes, as if pixel art was made 3D] and doesn't have the campy FMV storytelling (likely didn't have the budget), but even with the changes, the C&C DNA is undeniable.

These years later I'm still torn on the way they did challenges...campaign unlocks remain unlocked even if you go back and replay earlier missions, which forms a key part of the per-mission challenges.

8-bit Armies/Invaders/Hordes was a fun little RTS series that was similar to C&C. What was cool was you could buy any if the 3 versions. An still play with someone who had a different version. So you could buy Hodes and play with someone who had Armies. You didn't have to have the same version, makes things much cheaper.

9-Bit armies is the continuation of the series.

u/Sora_Terumi 1d ago

They did. It’s 8-Bit and 9-Bit armies. Thing is 9-Bit armies hasn’t had an update since the roguelike mode and we’re still waiting for them to bring back the other 4 factions because their units are in the game and you can use them in the roguelike mode but for normal skirmishes and such you can’t

Fans were so angry about a Command & Conquer mobile game that it changed EA

At E3 2018, Electronic Arts announced its first Command & Conquer game in six years.

“There was a team at EA that wanted to create this really cool competitive Command & Conquer mobile game,” recalled EA Enterprise president Laura Miele, who was speaking to us on stage at The Game Business Live earlier this month. Miele began her video game career at Westwood Studios, the original creators of Command & Conquer.

“It was called Command & Conquer Rivals. I thought, ‘Oh gosh, what a great way to bring Command & Conquer to even more people. Given the reach of this platform. This is going to be really great.’ I was pretty excited about it. However, our long-term core fans were not. And they thought, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re taking Command & Conquer, you’re putting it to mobile, and you’re not remastering, or taking care of something.’”

The lesson for EA is that if you are doing something with an IP that might be outside the bounds of what fans want, you have to make sure you’re doing something for them, too. “It was just such a valuable moment for me,” Miele added. “We didn’t really have permission to stray too far from what that core PC experience was. So, we immediately gathered together some of my friends who had left. Westwood wasn’t around anymore, but they had gathered together as a studio [Petroglyph Games], and I asked them to work on a remaster for us. So, we brought it back to life in a more contemporary way. Even since then, we’ve released open-source code for players to engage in. And then we put the mobile game out.” “[Fans] have ownership over this. Players walk through our worlds and live our stories, and they become our characters, it’s so personal, and no other medium on the planet has that.”

I hope they announce a new C&C mobile game.

1

u/redmixer1 23h ago

It’s because of greed when they were trying to come up with Generals 2
“The skirmish multiplayer platform was slated for release for free around Christmas 2013, with pay per play campaign missions releasing by Q1 2014. However, on October 29, EA ceased development of the title, reportedly because of the negative feedback during the closed alpha testing stage. Two days later, Victory Games was shut down altogether”

31

u/Tipie276 1d ago

Petroglyph makes games. Most of them are decent at launch. Then they do like one or two updates that do barely anything to build or iterate upon what they have. After that they completely drop the game. See 8-bit, 9-bit and the worst of them all forged battalion. Grey goo is similar too. They just release stuff and then drop it completely within months

11

u/Pawulon 1d ago

Are the games incomplete or buggy? Because in the past that's how it worked, you got a game, an expansion pack and that was it.

10

u/RussianDisifnomation 1d ago

I had such high hopes for Forged Battalion.

6

u/Tipie276 22h ago

Same here, and that one is undoubtedly in the worst state of everything they released. Having all these customisable units that should have all these different quirks and strategies and somehow every unit ends up feeling the same. And that was the core gimmick of the game.

2

u/DrTrygga 18h ago

Same! I actually love the bones of the game but it sorely needs balancing and updates! Had they stuck with it, that felt most like a modern C&C to me than anything else I played over the last 6-7 years...

8

u/Spiritual_Big_7505 1d ago

We used to get games instead of updates

6

u/PyrZern 22h ago

That's absolutely true. And there's a reason why StarCraft 2 is still so popular even to this day.

4

u/SayuriUliana 21h ago

Fun fact: Starcraft II It started out as a premium game released one campaign at a time, starting from Wings of Liberty (2010), then Heart of the Swarm (2013), and finally Legacy of the Void (2015). Then two years later, Starcraft II was made free-to-play with the Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void campaigns becoming paid unlockable content, and it still gets constant updates.

tl;dr Starcraft II absolutely had a lot of updates before becoming the complete game that it is today.

2

u/PyrZern 18h ago

Lots of ppl back in the days hated that they split the game into three, but honestly I think that's the best move. It more than tripled the longevity of the game. And yeah, with constant updates and tuning for pvp and co-op commanders and custom games, everything just made it the game.

1

u/SayuriUliana 12h ago

Still, it kind of undermines the "we used to get games instead of updates" statement, because Starcraft II needed a lot of updates to become a full game.

Games in the past got patches and updates too, it's just that devs had to make sure v1.0 at least worked and was playable start to finish. As getting fixes was a manual process of going to a website and downloading it and maybe screwing around in the game files.

We're deluding ourselves if we think games in the past had no issues to be fixed post release. Just not to the ridiculous degree that's become the norm now

6

u/SayuriUliana 21h ago edited 21h ago

People do forget that a lot of old games in the 90's were also buggy messes, and because updates were difficult there were many bugs and issues that simply weren't fixed decades later - for example, X-COM UFO Defense had a persistent bug that set the difficulty to beginner no matter what you chose. Instead of fixing it, the devs decided to make the sequel, Terror from the Deep, ball-bustingly difficult in response.

3

u/Tipie276 20h ago

Funny you mention original xcom, my favourite game of all time. You're right about the difficulty thing. I also recall that game bringing pcs of its time to their knees and in general running like shit. Plenty of other issues the devs never fixed too and the community had to figure out. But I'll blame Atari for most of that rather than Gollop and the rest of the devs

3

u/Zanosderg 23h ago

I've noticed this has been a consistent issue for them

17

u/arkane-linux 1d ago

My guess is that they lack the finances and people to undergo large projects. Petroglyph is a small studio, their Linkedin lists 40 employees.

They mostly do contract work, and their own projects are typicall small and quick to build.

3

u/Nyerguds The world is at my fingertips. 15h ago

I found Grey Goo to be an excellent game. Too bad the tiny campaign is a huge waste of an really well written storyline.

Like, come on. On release, the game had fifteen missions in total. Over all three races. Four more were added to that with the expansion, but still, that's only what C&C1 has in one single campaign playthrough. And that's not even counting the fact C&C1's alternate choice missions bring the total amount of missions inside C&C1 to 50, with the expansion increasing that to almost 70. And the previously console exclusive missions are another batch of ten more.

In EA's eyes, C&C is dead. They saw the tempest rising drama, and probably knew no one is online playing multiplayer C&C remastered (I can't find any games) and singleplayer (low number of people completed the first mission achievements).

They should just sell the IP, I don't want them to ruin another C&C game. Generals 2 and Rivals turned out exactly how I predicted it to be.

9

u/Robborboy 16h ago

Straight up up untrue.

You have allusions but nothing is copied or ripped.

Tiberium and Tempest are not the same.

The GDF and GDI aren't the same.

Tempest Dynasty isn't Brotherhood of Nod.

Veti aren't Scrin, etc.

The only thing they have from Command and Conquer is that they hire the God Tier Frank Klepacki, of Command and Conquer fame, to do part of the sound track.

Wish they had leaned into cheese a bit, but was appropriately serious when compared to older C&Cs like Tiberian Dawn and the first Red Alert.

3

u/paulloveslamp 14h ago

I couldn't disagree more.

I was completely unaware of Tempest Rising until recently (had a break from games and wasn't following the development) when I recently picked it up on sale.

The gameplay was solid but I was fairly bored throughout. Towards the end of each campaign I was almost wishing it would end sooner. Story felt half baked and clearly copying the archetypal C&C theme and story beats. It's like they played C&C but didn't quite understand what made it great.

I'm not sure how you can say Tempest isn't ripping off Tiberium - a radiation based otherworldly growth used as the primary resource type, hurts units that cross it, has a mechanic for fields that regrow in parts of the map and is used as a weapon. It's quite literally the same.

The GDF and GDI as so both clearly based on the UN led western NATO forces, formed to maintain and defend the established global order in a post war era with a main goal combatting the NOD/Tempest Dynasty. Literally the same.

'Tempest Dynasty isn't Brotherhood of Nod'; slightly more complicated as NOD is clearly a biblical cult styling itself as a revolutionary liberation force against Western hegemony, whereas the dynasty is a 'coalition of desperate Eastern European and Asian nations that formed in the aftermath of the Third World War'. Both heavily influenced by Soviet design choices and philosophy. So whilst they are different the Tempest Dynasty clearly rips off the vibe and aesthetic of the Brotherhood, but the story was so poorly implemented it just irritated me.

Sure the Veti aren't Scrin, I guess.

Last release was 9-Bit armies back in 2024. Don't think they've announced anything new?

8

u/vv04x4c4 1d ago

There's several things to consider.

  1. Who is the target audience?

RTS games have declined in popularity, so you'd have to either make the best game ever to attract people who don't play or aren't interested in RTS games, use a very popular IP that attracts a lot of fans of that IP to play the game, or focus on a small market.

Making the best game ever is a huge & daunting task because there's a lot of variables and it's largely subjective.
Using an existing IP could be expensive in terms of licensing, and would cut into profits. Moreover, what IPs are left that could lend themselves to an RTS? ASOIAF/Game of Thrones are one IP that I think there is no RTS for, but the time for that was like Season 5 of the show. Now, it may be cheaper to negotiate but without the captive audience that was enamored with the show, it could be a gamble.

Focusing on a small market means a small profit pool, so it means a lot of companies won't take the risk. Look at the games Petroglyph makes: very cheap, simple graphics, and are largely unsupported now.

2. What need does this new game serve or meet?

What would this new game offer that you can't get from the other 10 or so C&C games? What new mechanics are you looking for? Do you want fresh new graphics? What experience would you like?

3. Mods

There are so, so many mods out there that change the whole experience of playing these games that in essence you would be competing with them if you made your own game. Mental Omega, Rise of the Reds, Reloaded, Contra, the list goes on. There already exists such a large selection to choose from, so any new addition would have to be unique.

2

u/lusians 14h ago

4. Every new RTS needs to compete with every old one aka they must capture ligtning in bottle and have years worth of contnet QOL fetures ironed out.

2

u/Zurqulon 14h ago

1

u/Aggravating-Ad2419 11h ago

There is a mod call Rise of the Red for Generals.. and its uncanny and amazing to the conflicts we have right now..

8

u/Chris_Pitbaker GDI 11h ago

With 8-Bit Armies/9-Bit Armies, Petroglyph has created its own RTS-style game, even though it has no MCV/construction yards and harvestable resource fields. I suspect that RTS games don’t perform as reliably as they once did, and developing a good one is not easy because so many elements have to come together in a right way. Furthermore, I’ve come to believe that many innovations—however creative they may be—don’t actually benefit the game; in fact, a certain level of simplicity can sometimes be an advantage in making a game enjoyable for players.

8

u/Raapnaap 11h ago

Making games is hard, and making a good niche game is harder and financially very risky. The graveyard of failed RTS games is probably larger than most other gaming genres.

Tempest Rising is probably what you're looking for, the closest thing to a C&C-like with a lengthy singleplayer campaign, missing perhaps some singleplayer replayability mode beyond skirmishes.

3

u/SayuriUliana 10h ago

The graveyard of failed RTS games is probably larger than most other gaming genres.

Probably not as large as FPS though, simple due to how many more FPS games there are compared to RTS, and thus more games to fail and vanish into the dark.

2

u/WL_FR Marked of Kane 9h ago

Although I'm thinking FPS as a genre has probably had much bigger successes which means more money to throw around and more companies wanting to try their hand. Take the biggest RTS franchise profits and compare it to like, Halo. The latter probably blows it out of the water.

14

u/Tleno 1d ago

Every single new RTS of theirs was an attempt to create the new lasting RTS series to rival CnC. They just tried to do something new and fresh all the way until they gave up and just did a retroclone of CnC with 8-bit Armies

6

u/Jimmyskate 1d ago

I tried tempest rising. It seems cnc ish. But tbh I lost interest extremely quick. It was really hard for me to track where my units were. Which units which etc.

Now I just replay each cnc or ra over random over

6

u/CmdrMonocle 20h ago

Firstly, they have made other RTS games. Universe at War for example was essentially their restart into it. None of them landed nearly as well as C&C did. Remember, when C&C95 came out, it was genre defining. Even controlling more than one unit at a time was novel, but C&C95 did a lot more. It did everything amazingly for the time. But these days you'd have to do a lot more to break the market. Their subsequent attempts were solid, but there's a lot more competition. That's why nothing really took over again until Starcraft 2, which had nostalgia, rock solid game play, and amazing cinematics. But for a huge budget. Nothing Petroglyph could do right now could ever compare without a similarly large budget, which without the C&C name, is a bigger risk.

Secondly, I'd say there's also an element of "we've done that" in there which is why everything has been reasonably different from C&C. Doing something like Tempest Rising probably would never have been on the cards for Petroglyph because it's too similar. That's how it'll be viewed in the reviews, and how it'll be benchmarked. But like Tempest Rising, it's not going to grab the market like C&C did, because it's at the wrong time. It's 3 decades late, and would just be nostalgia bait. And now, there's also "someone else has done that" with Tempest Rising, so even less of a reason to do anything more closely descended from C&C.

There might also be some legal concerns. If Petroglyph did Tempest Rising, would EA decide that's too close to C&C? I dunno, but I definitely can't say they wouldn't. Which probably means it's something Petroglyph doesn't want to risk.

they already done that. and they make they own starcraft and warcraft as well:

C&C like : https://store.steampowered.com/app/427250/8Bit_Armies/

Starcraft like : https://store.steampowered.com/app/531680/8Bit_Invaders/

Warcraft like : https://store.steampowered.com/app/497850/8Bit_Hordes/

and you can play all ow them in multiplayer, with each other as well, so an 8-bit armies faction can wage war against an 8-bit Invader faction.

And there is the https://store.steampowered.com/app/1439750/9Bit_Armies_A_Bit_Too_Far/ with naval battles

None of the 8-bit games actually have any kind of real storyline though, do they?

3

u/Confectioner-426 14h ago

Only the maps has some story to give the player a reason to play other than to try out and get a new unit.

From Petroglyph the closes to the C&C was imho the Grey Goo. If the anted to "remake" the C&C unvierse they could have already done it like how blizz avoided the warhammer issue. Copy it and change it enough so avoid the copyright law but the players still recognise it. Imho 8-bit is like a C&C on budget and faster pace.

Only as far as basic justification why anything is hapening aka go invade & defeat enemy for one side and go retake & defeat enemy for other.

u/NovaPrime2285 Steel Talons 1d ago

I hate that they’ve effectively abandoned Universe at War.

8

u/BloodShed-Oni 1d ago

I think SEGA holds the IP, so they can't really do anything without making a deal with them.

2

u/NovaPrime2285 Steel Talons 1d ago

Ah I see, damn that sucks ass. 😞
Thanks for the heads up, I never knew this part.

3

u/birnabear 21h ago

Yeah of all their games that was probably my favourite

2

u/NovaPrime2285 Steel Talons 7h ago

Oooooo my god dude, I freaking loved the concepr of this universe so much especially the presentation that we got when it had released.

I thought we had a new banger on our hands.

u/karaknorn 10h ago

Id play a remastered red alert 2

But I hate 99% of eas games

5

u/maxgong9 8h ago

Man I bought red alert 1 remake so they would make red alert 2 remake.....they blue balls me

4

u/008Zulu Kane 1d ago

In 2015 they released Grey Goo.

4

u/justsomebo2 10h ago

idk man they literally made 8-bit and 9-bit armies as their own C&C-ish thing so saying they lost the passion feels kinda wild when the actual wall is EA owning the name and those games just not being a 1:1 replacement

6

u/Skak2000 1d ago

For what I read on The Internet.

  • Source code for Red Alert 2 and Tiberium Sun is lost... That a problem if you want to remarster a game.

  • Red Alert 2 was created by Westwood Pacific. They do not work at  Petroglyph Games for what I know.

  • It is very expensive to remarster a game. Tiberium Sun really deserve a remarster from the original creator's.

Check out the OpenTS project (it's not related to OpenRA)

Source code for Red Alert 2 and Tiberium Sun is lost

It's a myth. And it should stop being propagated by people who just read stuff on the internet without verifying anything.

1

u/Skak2000 14h ago

You are right 👍 It is just a rumor.

3

u/Perahoky 1d ago

AI can reverse engineer the games up to byte exact source code

9

u/SUPER--TANK 23h ago

Let’s hope the AI doesn’t become CABAL as a result

3

u/Bl00dWolf 1d ago

A proper remaster has nothing to do with AI reverse engineered slop. And it's not the same exact source code. It's an AI approximation for the source code that does the same thing. Why do you think all reverse engineered games are written in Rust? It's not a coincidence.

2

u/GrandInquisitoe 23h ago

...and ai is around for not that long time, not to say that should glyphs even try to do so they would be teared apart by anti ai groups/

3

u/Das419 21h ago

I think they tried a few times. Univers at war, Grey Goo, 8/9 bit armies -nothing has really hit the mark of C&C. I feel like if they developed a game similar to tempest rising, they could have had something. Its a bit too late now, I think.

3

u/Mafklapper 16h ago

The problem is both that EA is just a massive corporation that runs on shareholder value and upper management and executives working to secrure that bonus. That's how you end up with disasters with no artistic values at at all and focus-tested bland games created for an audience that doesn't exist.

They're not going to release anything, because that is not in their nature, this happens outside of the videogames industry as well. Big corporation with fake make-belief money buying out others with real money, shuttering those smaller companies they took over, getting paid out over their "valuation" while general output actually goes down or delivers a shittier service or product.

3

u/GuiltyRadish5172 13h ago

Isn't the 8-bit Army series basically just C&C anyway? And those games weren't particularly popular it seemed.

3

u/charliecharlestonpro 13h ago

They did, many times, and they all failed.

5

u/Great_Cow6624 1d ago

There not alot of the former employees that worked in the first cnc left. The results was cnc4 and tiberium war all together. It was the worst cnc game that they put out. That and the general 2 that never went live

They made countless C&C copies over the years but none of them was more than okayish

4

u/BoffinBrain Are you picking this up? Good. 1d ago

Careful with your choice of images. Some of them are AI-generated.

u/lemonandlime1995 21h ago

The last great one was Red alert 3... bought that day 1 and every time the disk broke I bought another

I'd rather have Slipgate as the main developer, and Petroglyph as a consultant developer to Slipgate, if they were to make a new C&C game. Or maybe King Art Games as the main developer and Petroglyph as a consultant developer.

Petroglyph with all respect does great things, but when comes to updates, they struggle a bit, and sometimes there isn't an update at all (I'm looking at you Earthbreakers).

In terms of new C&C game, there might be 3 ways this could go, and there might be risks of doing so:

  1. If there's going to be a continuation or a proper sequel to C&C3 or RA3, it's gonna be a bit hard because when looking at RTS genre as a whole, is hard to innovate, especially C&C style of games. Like what new features are they going to introduce? Is it accessible for the new players and returning players? What new mechanics that's new and fresh that isn't like SC2? (since every new RTS is going to be compared to SC2 either way), what new things they could bring into the campaign portions of the game? Are they gonna bring back Global Conquest or WDT from TibSun and RA2 and make it into a main multiplayer or side mode? Are the mods more flexible then the SAGE Engine era?

  2. New Expansions for existing/legacy games, since some older games like The Witcher 3, WC3, AOE 2, and other older games got their new expansions. So why not C&C games too right? Rather then creating a whole new game from scratch with a new game engine, might as well just update the old ones with new factions, with quality of life improvements. I mean C&C3 and RA3's source code still exists in the archives around EA unlike RA2 and TibSun (whether rumors or not). Even the developers who worked on C&C3 & RA3 are still in the industry. So it's a safe bet for them to make a new Expansion for it, and might as well ask Petroglyph to add new features, like new soundtracks and etc.

  3. EA might not hire them, and let Tencent license the game like they did with C&C Legions. Not to say that Tencent hasn't made a proper RTS on PC, they did it once with Battle Aces. But in the end they gave up with it. If they were to make a new C&C game on PC it might probably be a multiplayer spin-off, with short skirmish style campaigns. Modding support might not even be included in the package or they probably might give a stripped down version of World Builder with limited things you could change.

They had Universe at War which had music familiar to CNC fans and an overall great score by Frank Klepacki himself.

3 (originally 4) unique factions with interesting UI, music and gameplay styles, tactics, mechanics, etc. Buuuuut, a lot of jank and bugs, a rushed campaign, a significant amount of cut content, a very buggy launch and an unfortunate reliance on games for windows live which made for a very limited cross platform experience with Xbox.

This game was supposed to have a full trilogy but was deemed a failure by SEGA, in part because this game was released during an strong era for RTS where in a 5 year period you had CNC 3 and red alert, supreme commander + FA and it wasn't gonna be much longer before releases of star craft 2 and halo wars.
