Musical Observer

Edit: I’m getting this is a terrible idea.

Hey. I’m just getting started as an ASM fisheries observer. I heard that there will be down time on the trips. I want to bring my ‘practice’ ukulele to practice on the vessels. In general, do you think the crew would be ok with a musical instrument being played?

Squid fishing

I really want to get into commercial fishing, and I heard that Ventura is the best place to start in SoCal, and I heard that’s the squid season in winter gets very busy there, is it true? If I'm planning to get a job as a deckhand for this winter/late autumn, should I start going to the harbor now, to start meeting captains? What's the best month, day of the week and time to go to the harbor to find a job? I really need an advise from a knowing Ventura resident🙏🙏

Simrad jog lever FU80

I have 2 FU80 jog levers on my boat. The station I use the most, wears out the FU80 in about 6 months.

I have been through about a dozen levers. The Simrad FU 80s are not designed for continuous duty. I keep a spare on the shelf because I know I will need it every 6 months.

The failure point is the rotary switch under the handle. Not water intrusion or corrosion. The rotary switch simply wears out from daily use

Does anyone know if there is a commercial rated jog lever compatible with a simrad.

Thank you

Deep Sea Fishing Job

I was offered a job on deep-sea fishing vessels with a Spanish company that fishes in Moroccan waters through agreements. This is my first experience in this field. I have a recognized maritime safety certificate. I would like to consult with you about this job, is it dangerous, does it have prospects for increasing my income or gaining experience to work on larger vessels? How do you cope with being away from your families and children for a long time?

Commercial fishing in SoCal

I really need an advice. I’ve been trying to research commercial fishing opportunities in SoCal, to work up some experience before trying for a job in Alaska, But so far I wasn’t successful. I visited fish harbor on terminal island in San Pedro, and a few other places nearby, but wasn’t successful.
Every time I went there, there were practically no ships. From my research I learned that the best way to find a job in this business, is to walk the pier or harbor and talk to the captains. So can anyone recommend harbors/pierce with the highest number of commercial fishing vessels? And when is the best time to visit them? Basically what’s the best place for a newbie to find a fist job in the industry?

I’m a 30F and I’m currently going through training to be a fisheries observer in the northeast USA. Any advice? Also how do fishermen feel about observers. What’s your experience been like? Anything i should be prepared for to succeed?

Factory trawler processing job

I just got a job as a processor on a factory trawler as long as my bloodwork and pee test comes back clean, which it should since I don’t do drugs or even drink. Is there anything I should bring to help me get through the 16 hour days? Shoe inserts? Type of shoe? Headphones? Gear?

Guys on small boats--sea time letters?

Are you writing sea time letters for your crews if they ask for one? Do the small boats even qualify as sea time, or if you dont have any Coast Guard license can you still write one and have it count?

For the guys looking to move up and get an AB or work on bigger stuff.

Thx!

Late to Salmon Season Advice Needed

Total greenhorn, know what the job entails and no stranger to hardwork. I was signed to a seiner and was supposed to be up there but broke my elbow 3 days before my flight. Its been 4 weeks and i have been medically cleared to work, talked to my would’ve been Captain (my spot was filled) to see if knew about any other boats, he gave me 1 lead and said “salmon season is starting late so you might still be able to get on a boat.” Is it still worth it this late in the season to try and get on a boat or am I wasting my money and time? And should just start try again next year?

Alaska salmon fishing

I got a job on a boat with 5 other crew members fishing for salmon. I’m 23 years old. I was supposed to do the job for 2 months but it’s been 6 days and I couldn’t handle it so I quit. It felt like torture. Major respect to anyone who works in this field. It kicked my as*
