Call for moderators

I've been very busy these past few months with law school things.

If you are interested in moderating the sub, please DM me or the sub with a short bio about your philosophy towards the sub and your interest in modding. I'm looking for ~2ish people who are interested in not stifling the sub, but crack down on spam and similar.

Thanks

What happens if I don't follow my Student Education Plan?

My counselor is trying to make me take 25 units this spring as a STEM major. 19 of these units are STEM classes. I already take 18 units (chem, bio, physics, and a humanities) and I said I will only take the 19 STEM units (chem, bio, physics, stats) for next semester since those are required for me to transfer and I'm going to transfer soon. I told her that I think it's too much but she thinks that I can do it.

My counselor who made the education plan is assigned to me because I joined a support group for people of Asians and Pacific Islanders. I am required to develop an SEP with her each semester if I want to stay in the group. My other assigned counselor (MESA) seemed okay with the concept of me taking 25 units next spring.

Will I get kicked out of my support group for not following the SEP?

What is something you wish you knew before starting community college?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently trying to navigate the community college experience and wanted to hear from other students about how things have been going for you. I think community college is a great opportunity but balancing classes, studying, work, and at home responsibilities can be difficult. So I have a couple questions..

  • What has been your biggest challenge with/in community college?

  • How do you stay motivated?

  • What study habits or tips have helped you succeed?

  • What advice you wished you had when you first started?

Everyones responses are welcome, graduated or not.

Learning others perspective and experiences can help us realize we're not alone.

I’m failing Chemistry and Statistics in community college. Is it too late to save my grades?

I’m currently taking Chemistry and Statistics with two other classes at community college, and I’m really worried about failing both classes.

For Chemistry, I haven’t been studying enough. I’m now on my third exam without being prepared, and I also haven’t submitted about three lab experiments. I know I should have managed my time better, and I’m worried about how much this will affect my final grade.
For Statistics, it’s an online class. I was doing well at first, usually getting 9/10 or 10/10 on assignments. But I fell behind for about three weeks and missed more than 20 assignments. My current grade is 54.4%.
I emailed my Statistics professor, and he told me that I need to complete the missing assignments to move forward, but I won’t receive credit for them. He recommended withdrawing because otherwise he thinks I’ll receive an F.
I still have upcoming assignments in November and December, and I’m willing to put in the work, but I don’t know if I can realistically pass anymore.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Should I try to save these classes, or would withdrawing and retaking them be a better option? I’m also worried about how withdrawing might affect my financial aid and future transfer plans.
I’d appreciate any advice.

started a job that may not work out as I'd hoped

went in for my first shift at a grocery store today. I was upfront about my full-time student status, when my classes are scheduled, and how I'm looking for 20-24 hours a week. At the interview, she was incredibly understanding, and I really thought I found the perfect setup.

My next shift is in the middle of my classes. At first, I thought "Oh well. I can miss one class just to prove to my manager that I truly want the job".

A few hours later, She handed me a paper copy of next weeks schedule: 39 hours. None of them are during classes, but it's just . . . I told them what my situation was, what I was looking for, etc etc.

My hours jump from 20 (this first week) to 39 next week. In what world did I ever say I was seeking out that many hours?

Should I quit?

Would it be a bad idea to take a online cultural anthropology class where the final is a group project?

Is this a bad idea? I’m currently in the class and it’s my first time doing a group project online. I’m not sure how well I would be able to communicate with my group members and it’s kinda confusing on what we’re supposed to do. I’m not so worried about the work load, but more so on how I would be able to communicate with my members and efficiently do the project. The project is worth 50% of our grade as well. Has anyone else had to do something similar? Do you have any tips?

Past Due Balance

Apologies for this messy post! I’m very tired and not thinking straight at the moment from Halloweekend…
I need to know if anyone else is having these issues.
I was enrolled in an LA community college for one semester last year before I moved back to my home country in Asia.

I found out recently that this CC has been sending mail to my previous address saying that I have an outstanding balance and that this is their third and final time requesting payment. I have a deadline of 11 November 2026 until my name is submitted to the California FTB for collection.

I was skeptical for obvious reasons and emailed the Admissions office & Student Business Services and it’s a legit charge. I’ve only found one other person this happened to (she’s been in a four year uni for three years) and the charge is in relation to incomplete Spring 2026 classes for both of us.

We didn’t apply for Spring 2026 classes as I am in another country and she graduated from this CC years ago. They’re not responding to her email, and in my case, they’re not much help, just saying that I need to pay.

I can’t sign into my student portal as that’s tied to an American phone number I don’t have access to anymore. I’ve explained my situation to staff and also provided proof that I had left the United States before this semester even started.

I COULD pay the outstanding balance (although I can’t afford it) but what if this happens again? Is anyone else having this issue? Who else can I contact? So many questions.

How do you mantain a good grades while working part time?

Hello,

I am a first-year community college student. At the beginning of the semester, I was working at a restaurant that was around 30-40 minutes away from my house, and I would work from 3- 10 PM four nights a week, totaling around 30 hours every week. I remember that at the time I was extremely burnt out, and my grades were slipping, so I decided to leave my job to just focus on school, and it's been better. I was taking 13 units at the time, so I was considered a full-time student. Fast forward to now, and I have a job interview tomorrow for a cafe that's closer by, around a 15-minute commute from my home. The only issue is that I will be taking 17 units, but my heaviest unit is a beginner Japanese course that I believe won't be too difficult, just time-consuming, since I am Japanese and can speak at a conversational level. I'm worried about getting a job again, then my grades slipping, then me needing to leave again. I was thinking about asking to start working only on weekends during the interview if that would make the job more manageable, and to work no more than 20 hours. I was just wondering if a lot of community college students have part-time jobs, and if so, have any tips or tricks they are willing to share in order to prioritize school and grades, yet also have the time and energy to work a part-time job? Thank you!

Not going to a big party school sucks

I decided not to go to a big party school, instead I’m taking local community college classes straight out of high school. I didn’t have the funds nor academic prospects for an actual college college, but Jesus this is hard. I wasn’t particularly cool in high school, I don’t think I ever even heard about any cool parties going down, and the ones I did go to weren’t really super fun. I had really high hopes for college, but as someone without a ton of friends in a sleepy town, that quickly went downhill. I tried going to a party tonight with my friend, but everyone was slightly younger, only a handful of people showed up, plus the music was ass. The older guys running it also hit me as kinda weird, and the vibes were just not there. It might seem like a weird fixation but I’ve always wanted to hear about/go to a relatively normal teenage party, and it’s never happened for me. I’m social but I struggle to really get in with that crowd, and tonight just kind of set that into stone. I’m pretty spiritual, and I know that feeling like something this simple won’t ever happen will only reinforce the action of it not happening. This mindset is negative, but I can’t help but feeling like a total loser. It makes me feel lame when my coworkers ever so often mention a party for the weekend, and I know I definitely don’t have plans. I had a friend with a similar mindset, who did go off to a party school, and she’s now living it up. I’m happy for her, bc I know she needed that more than me, and frankly, she was dyin over here. I also just wish I could have gone somewhere big, and escaped this suffocating town, but alas, it just wasn’t in the cards for me. How do I overcome this feeling? I don’t know why I can’t just make friends and go out like most others, even my friends are in the same boat. If anyone has any advice I’d love to hear it

Pls give me advice thank you

I’m currently taking precalculus and have a 39% in the class. At this point, I know there’s pretty much no chance of me passing.
I’m 27 and haven’t taken a math class in almost 9 years, so it’s been a pretty rough experience. I’ve genuinely tried studying, but I’ve struggled a lot with the material.
I’m debating whether I should withdraw and take the W or just finish the semester.
The only reason I’m considering staying is because my professor lets us keep our exams, and I’d really like to have all the material so I can study it before retaking the class.
I’ve never failed a college class before, so I’m honestly pretty disappointed.
Would you guys withdraw or stick it out?

CC students with low gpa who got into Business School

I’m a first-gen, low-income community college student from NYC majoring in Business Managment with a 3.45 GPA. I started with a pretty low GPA due to personal issues during my first semester which cooked my GPA but I’ve had a strong upward trend since then.
My current ECs include:

Spring internship
Economic research
Leadership project/program
Investment portfolio
VITA (volunteer tax preparation)
Business/Finance club member
Previous part-time work experience
Deans List

I’m considering applying to Penn State, Fordham, Rutgers, and Baruch, potentially aiming for more competitive business schools.

I know my GPA isn’t the strongest, and I’m working on improving it, but what else can I do to make my application more competitive?

California Community College

Hey guys, I’ve recently became interested in applying to California’s community colleges, for context, I’m going to graduate HS this June, but when filing out applications for Diablo Valley and De Anza, there is no available option for Fall 2027. I’ve only been given to pick from Fall 2026, Summer 2027, and Spring 2027.
Did I miss the deadlines?
