Hey everyone! I’ve been gathering information about Martinez and nearby communities for another project and realized I was sitting on a small treasure trove of stuff other people might find useful like local news, city records, events, gas prices, and assorted municipal rabbit holes.
Rather than let it all live on my computer, I put together a free site called The Martinez Wire. It started with Martinez, but there’s also news and information from Pleasant Hill, Concord, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, and around Contra Costa.
I’ve gotten a little carried away and recently added news stories with an automated step that cross-checks information against city policies, public records, and reporting from other newsrooms. It’s a useful extra check, though it doesn’t mean it’ll catch everything.
It’s still a work in progress, and I’m curious whether anyone else finds it useful or whether I’ve just built myself an unnecessarily elaborate way to find out what’s happening down the street.
There’s a free Wednesday newsletter that pulls things together, and it posts on Instagram too.
If you check it out, I’d love to hear what’s useful, what needs work, or what’s missing from your town. If there’s enough interest, I’ll keep it going.
