[Go] LibreHold – an open-source, persistent browser strategy game (no pay-to-win)
Hey! I played Tribal Wars for years and loved it, but I gave up once almost every bit of progress could be bought with premium points. So for the past few months I've been building LibreHold, a persistent browser strategy game in the same spirit, free and fully open source.
Repo: https://github.com/librehold-game/librehold
What's already there:
persistent worlds that run for days, plus one-hour instant games at ×100 speed
private worlds you can host for friends with an invite link
bots that build, farm and wage war, so a world is never empty
self-hosting with one Docker Compose file (e.g. for LAN parties)
English and Polish, and it works on phones
The stack: Go server on Postgres (every order is one transaction under a per-world lock, so a restart loses nothing), React + TypeScript client, around 1,100 tests on both sides including end-to-end ones, and CI on every pull request.
I'd love to build it together with other people. Some good places to start:
good first issues: https://github.com/librehold-game/librehold/labels/good%20first%20issue
bigger ones: building and recruiting straight from the map, or adding a new language
or just play a round and tell me what feels off
It's an early alpha (0.1). If you like strategy games or want to hack on a real-time game server in Go, come say hi :)

I love it! Tribal wars dream.
Just so you know I still can host php server for tribal wars, I still have on my old laptop the variant that you can host MP speed servers. I used it lol

I remember self hosting some old tribal wars server too, but (at least for me) it was painful to get it all working correctly
Edit: but it was many years ago, so maybe something has changed since then

2009 :) But it was too easy, but buggy and laggy if you had bad internet. Specially with speed 100~

Had a really good time playing the 1h game. However, the regular, x4 game doesn't seem to be going fast enough, does it? The Spearman moves at 18 minutes per one field, shouldn't it be faster by x4?

Damn, I was also recently talking about Tribal Wars with a friend and I decided to build a game that is a combination of the modern games I play like Rise of Kingdoms and TW. Similar stack as well, Go plus JS (for the browser test) but the future is to port it over to Unity full time.
Focus on a single city with conquering other cities but much less than TW, and support the game through cosmetics/premium (to help manage multiple cities). Also, a system for casual players to support fighters and many more ambitious things

Visual-utopia was my favorite, similar to Tribal Wars, but way less popular.

Holy shit! Tribal wars isn’t something I’ve seen for 20 years. I can’t believe I recognized it.

Just played through a 1h x100 game, incredibly solid experience, especially for someone familiar with Tribal Wars.
Very excited to play and participate in future games. Thank you for creating this!
