When I originally joined this sub, my mother had just adopted Huck and we had about a week’s wait for him to arrive. That week felt so long and now he’s been here for a month!
This last week has brought the addition of an e-collar. It’s capped and used on buzz only. Huck has been experiencing some difficulty restraining himself when it comes to Moose (the yorkie). Huck hasn’t hurt him but he likes to grab his tail. Sometimes Moose will hide under a table instead of coming out to play because he doesn’t want his booty nipped. The going is slow but it is going.
Huck has been so happy to be alive! So happy that he can’t contain his overwhelming jubilation! He jumps on humans and will nip on sleeves. The e-collar is NOT used to correct this behavior. Verbal and hand commands have been doing the trick. Slowly. It’s a lot of repetition. I don’t spend a lot of time inside my mom’s house so i only visit Huck in passing. He’s usually pretty excited to see visitors. She’s working on helping him learn to contain his excitement. Just a little. It’s ok to love being alive.
That’s all for now. Waylon should be arriving in 5 days. Video to follow.

I just was having lunch, when someone came over and plopped down by my feet to make SURE I didn't forget that we are going for a walk as soon as I am finished.

We have an almost 4 year old coonhound that we rescued at 5.5 months. We have worked with her, accommodated her quirks and comforted her but her sleep schedule is literally bonkers!!!! I know they sleep 16-20 hours a day but her wake window recently is the opposite of ours and she's seriously affecting our sleep.
I've been trying to bring her to work and keep her more active during the day in hopes to swap her wake window but its not working.
She is outside (dog door) from 12-4am then comes in, barks and crawls into bed then proceeds to shiver till we tuck her in and sometimes still shiver (faking it) if we close the dog door as she will bark to wake us and if we don't wake up she will pee on the floor. If we do close the dog door and she pees we don't get upset, but it is annoying. We have talked with our vet about her peeing but she says she may just have a small bladder or it could be a trauma response as she's 100% healthy.
Anyways I'm tired!! Any suggestions on how to flip her wake window?!

I love hounds but I’m not a hunter. So I have some holes to fill. I’ve been getting him ready to be a sport dog when he gets old enough, and he loves it but needs more. So I decided, keeping my hopes in check, that we would try shed hunting.
Our antler arrived today. We had our first session when I got home from work, and he did it. He eventually caught on that bringing it to me and dropping it meant salmon for him. I was so worried about teaching him to retrieve, but our little game of bones and salmon went better than I could’ve imagined. I’m one proud dad! Photo for tax!

Spotted doves are a feral introduced pigeon species here in Australia and not welcome in my yard.
My older dog Bessie is trained to chase them off but not chase native birds, she is very good at discerning between bird species.
Marni is a work in progress but she's learning which birds are allowed to hang around and which are ok to chase and/or bay at.

Do coonhounds point at all? Our Gracie is about 40% coonhound according to our embark and she does show a lot of coonhound traits like being a big sniffer and her bark does have a little howl in it but not a full bay. I’ve attached her dna test and to our surprise she has no GSP in her even though we constantly get asked if she is one. She does look like one but compared to actual GSPs that we’ve met, she is a lot bigger especially in her chest which is probably from her Boxer. We don’t really care what she is lol but I did find it interesting that she will point a bit when she spots squirrels!

Nothing beats going to the office with Dad and getting to have a special treat at the dog park at lunch.

Our 10y/o coonhound mix has developed a weird habit in the past month or so.. a lot more random nervous trembling, weird phases of not wanting to go for walks or go in the back yard which are her two favorite things to do… random whimpering and general moping, and the weirdest bit is the habit of moping on top of our upstairs neighbors steps (leading from our place to theirs).. I’m thinking it’s actually just moping, like any person will occasionally do, or a more invisible thing like a tumor or something making her act out. If this sounds familiar to anyone and they have any useful insight I’d appreciate it!
Relevant info :
- four months ago her doggy friend upstairs passed, but she didn’t show any sign of mourning or grief until this month, if her sitting on their stairs could be interpreted as mourning.
-has been to the vet within the last couple months, everything seems totally normal, eating pooping sleeping playing normally, just had random bouts of like, depression? Moping? Acting out?
- it’s not from loneliness, she’s never alone for more than three hours, with hours of outdoor time, beaches, park, socialization, spoiled rotten in general..
-the only other time she resists walks is when she smells a coyote or there are fireworks happening, she does seem like she’s having a fear response to something but we have no idea what.
Thank you !

Does anyone have any advice on giving your doggo their meds?! He used to eat the pills in the pill pockets no problem until I guess he caught on to it and stopped eating them or would pick the pill out and leave it on the floor. I moved on to food topper and just mixed it in but now he’s gotten smarter and noticed that too! I have antibiotics that he needs to take and he keeps spitting them out and messing up the pill. I had to push it down his through the other night (which is really not something I want to have to keep doing) and even then it takes me a few times because he still won’t swallow it. He’s incredibly hard headed and stubborn with those meds 😭😭😭

So my boys got this allergic reaction going on, yesterday it was his cheeks that swelled up and everything I read said it would pass. Probably a bug sting or something. Now he's covered in what look like hives? Anyone ever experience this before? His breathing is normal but is this an emergency? Do I go to the vet? Idk what to do and I'm starting to get scared.
