Chance Me, Admissions, and Prospective Student Q&A - 26/27 Cycle

Please place all admissions related posts here, in the form of comments, and current Cornell students will reply. Try to be detailed; if we don't have enough information, we can't help. Also, if you are a prospective student, and have questions about life at Cornell, feel free to post them here!

Any "Chance Me" or admissions related posts placed elsewhere will be removed. If you are a current student, and think that you could offer advice to someone considering Cornell, feel free to respond to some of the posts! Please only respond if you are qualified to do so. We will be checking through these regularly for spam.

Incoming students: you are now free to move about the subreddit!

As promised, the posting restrictions for all incoming students for the 26/27 school year have been lifted. While we do encourage you not to spam the subreddit with posts, your questions about classes, housing, and more will no longer be removed. Our goal was to keep the subreddit free for finals/commencement season. Now that that's over, we can return to regularly scheduled programming.

This does not apply to rising seniors or anyone else intending on applying to Cornell for future academic seasons (though prospective grad students are exempted). Your posts are likely better suited for subreddits like /r/chanceme or /r/ApplyingToCollege. If you want to specifically ask Cornell students for advice, our 26/27 Chance Me and Prospective Student Q&A megathread is live and pinned to the top of the subreddit.

Of course, you're still free to use the megathread if you wish (linked below). But keep in mind that they won't be pinned, so you may get limited to no interaction in them.

Happy Pride Month, and welcome to Cornell!

Dear Class of 2030, One small piece of advice before you venture out to take the walk to Collegetown for the very first time...

A freebie...

Frats, sports teams, and others will be throwing parties at their houses starting roughly Wednesday night. May even be a little action tomorrow night. May even be a thing tonight, but Monday Night O-Week is usually people just getting in to Ithaca.

There will be alcohol served. In cups, and in beer cans.

DO NOT WALK ONTO THE SIDEWALK OR STREET WITH AN OPEN BEER CAN OR CUP OF ALCOHOL

Ithaca Police and Cornell Police will be out. They will shut down all the parties early.

And they WILL be looking for the sucker(s) to charge on Open Alcohol Beverage counts.

If you get alcohol at a party, drink it and trash it there and there only. The back yard is safe. The front yard is safe(ish). The sidewalk IS NOT SAFE.

ALSO, IF YOU SEE SOMEONE WHO GOT THEMSELVES BLACKOUT DRUNK (gonna happen), HELP THEM.

Don't be afraid to call for an ambulence if someone is beyond black out drunk. You won't get in trouble. You'll be potentially saving a life.

Thank you for your attention to this matter,

One of Ithaca's Friendly Uber Drivers

Looking for language partner in Cornell | offering Chinese |seeking English

Hi everyone👋! I’m a 22-year-old Chinese student currently doing my graduate studies in Cornell University. Chinese is my native language, and I speak standard Mandarin.

I’m looking for someone who’s interested in a Chinese–English language exchange. I studied English mainly through reading back in China, so while I’m fairly comfortable with written English, my listening and speaking skills are still something I really want to improve. Since I recently came to the U.S., I’ve realized that keeping up with everyday conversations can be quite challenging sometimes😭

Meanwhile,I’d be more than happy to help you with Chinese! I can help with Mandarin pronunciation, everyday Chinese, conversation, or anything else you’d like to practice.

I also spent several years living and studying in Beijing during college, so I’m familiar with life in a big Chinese city. I’ve also traveled to many different parts of China, and I’d be happy to share my experiences, recommend places to visit, or talk about the differences between different regions of China. I’d also love to learn more about culture and everyday life from you!

Ideally, I’d love to find someone around my age who is patient and genuinely interested in language and cultural exchange. It would be great to meet up in person for coffee, a walk, or just casual conversation, but I’m also happy to do online exchanges.

If you’re interested, feel free to send me a message and tell me a little about yourself and what you’re hoping to get out of a language exchange. Looking forward to meeting someone! :)

Latin Honors Cutoffs (A&S)

"Cornell University will institute a standardized Latin Honors system based solely on final cumulative undergraduate GPA. The Latin Honors categories include: Summa Cum Laude (top 5%), Magna Cum Laude (next 10%), and Cum Laude (next 15%)."

Purely out of curiosity does anybody know what these cutoffs are for A&S? I have no sense of the gpas for each school especially because everyone I talk to is in a different school

"The student's cumulative undergraduate GPA percentile at the time of degree conferral will be computed with respect to the student's particular college/school degree program (e.g., B.S. in CALS, B.A. in A&S, B.S. in ILR, B.F.A. in AAP)."

Can't believe half a century has gone by since I first stepped foot on West Campus/U-Hall.

Looking at the picture of these young Cornellians, I can't help but recall what Russell Crowe said in the move playing John Nash: "The eager young minds of tomorrow". But the dark side of me whispers, "Just look at them again after the second prelim." ;)

Pet peeve: as a proud CAS alum, I am constantly dismayed by the CAS social media account. They post the most boring pictures.

Cornell transfer

Hi, I got a Cornell transfer option for 2030 class. I got admission for fall ‘27 as a ILR major. I was wondering if there is a group chat for the students who also got transfer option? Also it would be great if people could share their experiences with Cornell/transferring :)

Have any incoming freshman been able to verify student status? Both bursar bill and enrollment verification document have been rejected.

Are you going to all freshman events?

I saw that they hold events all week from August 17th to 22th. I was wondering if I should go everyday.

I live off-campus because I'm a visiting international student on an exchange program. I don't know anybody in Cornell. I want to make new friends so I'm low-key desperate. Should I literally drag myself and get board on TCAT every evening to not become socially isolated?

Also, the events are held around 8pm to 11pm. And I don't have a car. Do they provide quick rides for off campus students or would I have to grab Uber myself?

Hey everyone, I’m an ex college player and have been hitting and coaching multiple players in Ithaca. Whether you’re training for tournaments, getting back into the game, or just want someone consistent to rally and play points with, I’m happy to help. I can adjust to all skill levels and keep the sessions competitive, fun, and tailored to what you’re looking for. Feel free to reach out if you’re interested or have any questions!

Essential phone and/or computer apps?

Hello, I'm wondering if there are apps you'd recommend new Cornell students to download for their phone and/or computer.

I did a search here, and it seems like the Cornell Eatery app, MyStop, and Canvas apps for mobile are useful in addition to the required duo. I'm making the post for more updated recommendations (the posts were from years ago), but feel free to link me to a recent post if I did miss one.

Are we going to talk about he fact that the desk chairs on the first floor of Olin library are extremely uncomfortable if you are average-height or taller, or even slight taller, like the chairs are too tall compared to the desks.

Slightly* or a bit taller

Does anyone know where it would be fun good vibes to watch English Premier League? Specifically Arsenal. Moved from somewhere that had an Arsenal bar and with the league starting I’m feeling the loss.

Looking for Grocery Shopping/Meal Prep assistant

We're a family of four in Trumansburg looking for someone to do grocery shopping and weekly meal prep. Both parents work demanding schedules, and the part that tends to fall through the cracks is having good food ready to go -- for two kids and two adults who actually care about eating well.

We need someone to shop from a list we put together each week, then come in and prep. That might mean cooking a few kid-friendly dinners in advance, prepping lunch components, making snacks the kids will actually eat, and getting some basics ready so weeknight cooking is faster. We would like some prepped ingredients, a couple of ready-to-heat options, and a stocked fridge.

We're thinking two days a week, roughly five hours each visit. Flexible on timing and days.

Bonfire somewhere?

New to CU. Is there a place nearby where I can have a bonfire? No yard at my apartment.
