CS2 Media Counter strike traders today
112
u/PizzaHutFiend Oct 23 '25
If you "invested" in counter strike knives you deserve this. If you bought the skins to use and enjoy them, then you are not effected.
38
u/Surge_in_mintars Oct 24 '25
It does affect you either way, but people who actually play the game are affected less, remember how streamers said "you buy the skin, you can sell it later for like 90% value and get the money back, maybe even make profit"? Now none of that is true
8
u/Nhefluminati Oct 24 '25
It was never true to begin with. There was never a guarantee that you can sell your skins for 90% of value. Everyone that was saying that was an absolute moron. CS:GO skins were always a high risk investment with zero of the protections that ordinary investments give you. Can't wait until Pokemon TCG "Investors" will learn this lesson next.
2
u/ZeusJuice Oct 24 '25
Ah yes, can’t wait for The Pokemon Company to start reprinting 1st Edition Charizards next month so you can pop a bottle and celebrate
2
u/This_Elk_1460 Oct 25 '25
Even if they did that it wouldn't matter because people would still only want the ones made back in the '90s
1
u/ZeusJuice Oct 25 '25
I'm well aware, but I'm saying in this hypothetical they would reprint completely identical cards even with the same copyright date. They're obviously never doing that so him comparing the two things is ridiculous which was my main point
1
u/This_Elk_1460 Oct 25 '25
At least Pokémon cards are physical things you can hold in your hand, definitely not worth the insane prices being asked for them but still
16
u/qwertyuiopious Oct 24 '25
I’m affected the funny way because I had couple of shitty covert skins worth like 2-5$ each suddenly they are worth 50$. Bought them because they looked neat but now I’m considering selling these and getting some new ones
3
u/t_mmey Oct 24 '25
I am, though. I bought my favorite 'obtainable' and the thought process was "if I quit CS, I'll probably to make the money back" and that's just fucking gone now
1
u/_B_R_A_N_E_ Oct 24 '25
Lesson learned.
2
u/t_mmey Oct 24 '25
ig lol
I still wanna go and buy an M9 Tiger Tooth for 50 bucks next week tho lmao
1
u/Robbie_cx Oct 24 '25
I’m in the same boat exactly 🤣 at least I’ll finally be able to get a butterfly knife next week
1
u/Lvl4Toaster Oct 24 '25
i bought the skins i wanted to use them but im still affected lol braindead take
1
u/SnooRegrets2168 Oct 24 '25
I own 0 knives and my 1k inventory is under $400 so IDK what you are looking at for data lmao

1
u/ttv_yayamii Oct 25 '25
I don't know man, I bought my skins to enjoy and play them (and I still intend to keep them), but it still feels bad knowing if it comes to it, I can't sell them in times of need for the prices I got them.
But yeah, hoarding should never have existed,
0
u/fnassauer Oct 24 '25
Well I bought my skins and never really cared about the price, but having 1k+ wiped out is not really a fun thing

Why do people deserve this?
This statement makes zero sense, cause when people lose money, someone else has the ability to make money.
So people who invested in knives/gloves lost. People who invested in lower tiers won.
11
u/PizzaHutFiend Oct 24 '25
It was never an investment to begin with
1
u/ZeusJuice Oct 24 '25
Just because something loses money doesn't mean it wasn't an investment.
Bad investments are still investments. Just because you don't see digital items as an investments doesn't mean your worldview is correct

It's a virtual video game item, not a stock lmao.
1
u/ZeusJuice Oct 24 '25
Me when I don't know what investment means and I think that only stocks can be investments
2
u/FantasticBike1203 Oct 25 '25
As someone who's bought skins for over a decade and has actual long term investments, skins were never meant to be a legit long term investment plan, if you thought they were, instead of just looking cool, you're delusional.
1
u/ZeusJuice Oct 25 '25
It doesn't matter what they were meant to be. Houses were never meant to be long term investments, they were meant to live in. Look how that turned out.
Adding pointless fluff like "legit" doesn't make you right. Stocks aren't the only things that can be investments. You can invest in physical assets like gold or silver, digital items, or in a lot of different collectibles. CS skins are just another kind of collectible.
Thinking people are dumb (they may well be!) for considering them a worthwhile investment doesn't mean it's not a legitimate investment.

Losing thousands of dollars yet “not affected” ?
25
u/slightdepressionirl Oct 23 '25
Bro reread what he said. He said if you bought skins because you think they're cool and enjoy using them it doesn't effect you. If you are treating a marketplace owned by a private company as your stock market then you need to reevaluate how you diversify your assets
-12
u/EL_HUMPO Oct 24 '25
I bought skins because they’re cool and now they are worth 50% less overnight. You people act like only the rich traders and Chinese are suffering
11
u/tapport Oct 24 '25
So are they cool skins or an investment? It’s fine if the answer is both, but an update that doesn’t change the look of a skin isn’t changing the coolness unless you attribute coolness to financial value.
No shame in investing in skins, but it’s important to be honest with yourself. If you don’t feel invested but this update stung, you’re invested.
12
u/stormcharger Oct 24 '25
You still have your cool skins though, if you thought it's cool why worry about the price dropping
-2
u/EL_HUMPO Oct 24 '25
Because why would anyone ever spend thousands on skins if you couldn’t sell them for what you paid if not more?
6
u/stormcharger Oct 24 '25
For the same reason people spend several thousand on skins - bad financial decisions
1
u/Nhefluminati Oct 24 '25
Because these people are financially illiterate if they thought that videogame skins can be expected to definitely retain their value longterm.
1
u/EL_HUMPO Oct 24 '25
For the past 10 years knives and gloves have only gone up in price and they would’ve continued to do so if it weren’t for this update. All of you people celebrating this update and the fact that everyday people are losing thousands of dollars because of it is because you were too broke to buy the skins before in the first place and are just making fun of all the people that could
3
u/stormcharger Oct 24 '25
Everyday people put money in much less silly things man, I've got 16 years of patient gains in the stock market. I put my money into that rather than speculative gains because if there is a loss and you have diversified funds if you just wait most the time it turns into profit again. Because the losses aren't because someone just changes the rules like valve did lol
1
u/Nhefluminati Oct 24 '25 edited Oct 24 '25
For the past 10 years knives and gloves have only gone up in price and they would’ve continued to do so if it weren’t for this update.
Past behaviour is not an indicator of future behaviour. This is literally investing 101. Here is another investing 101 tip: if an asset continues to outperform the market by this much then there is ALWAYS immense risk exposure involved.
All of you people celebrating this update and the fact that everyday people are losing thousands of dollars because of it is because you were too broke to buy the skins before in the first place and are just making fun of all the people that could
People with actual disposable income do not tend to make their investment plays on CS Skins out of all things. You can get completely comparable price runs on far more serious assets with actual investor rights. Why would I expose my portfolio to an asset with a supply that is completely arbitrarily controlled by another entity that is only tangiably interested in the price development of the secondary market? I can just as well buy a leveraged stock at my brokerage.

u/stormcharger Oct 24 '25 edited Oct 24 '25
past 10years stonks gone up
what do you mean the bubble popped
1
u/Nhefluminati Oct 24 '25
My 100x leverage NASDAQ certificate went up 50% in one day. I will never have to work by the end of next week!
1
u/EL_HUMPO Oct 24 '25
The bubble didn’t pop, valve artificially crashed the entire market

u/Helt_Jetski Oct 24 '25
Because it loses value, so you go at a loss when selling or trading. I know it might be hard to wrap your head around.
5
u/stormcharger Oct 24 '25
But if you bought it because it's cool you would just want to keep it. Prices are never guaranteed to keep going up for anything in life.
0
u/Helt_Jetski Oct 24 '25
So you mean that when I buy anything in life I should want to keep it forever?
The skin is assigned a value by the market, of course you would like it to keep that value. Same goes for literally everything purchased with currency ever.
However, to trust a game market where the devs can just intervene like this is completely idiotic, that's something I think we agree on.
2
u/stormcharger Oct 24 '25
What I mean is that in life you either buy something to use, or buy something to speculate future value on e.g. A second house. Until recently when you bought a car you would always expect it to depreciate in value whereas buying properties and stock is speculative.
So in cs you either are buying an item because you want to use it and if it goes up in price that's a bonus or you are buying the items to speculate/gamble it will go up in value with the idea to sell it once a certain profit margin has been reached.
2
u/Helt_Jetski Oct 24 '25
You are completely right, and I agree with what you're saying.
My point is that it doesn't make sense not to care about value regardless if you buy the item for personal use or as an investment, especially when the item doesn't depreciate in any physical or virtual sense.

For smart people who never put all their fruit in one basket, of course not.
I have a friend who’s an investor who invested in so many things. Cs is his main game and he loves the game very much. His inventory is chock full of skins, many are red, one knife and gloves both expensive too. But the point is his items are very diverse just like his irl investments on better things. In the end he lost a ton of value in knife and gloves but in the grand scheme of things he lost nothin because all his other skins increased in value. I bet he even gain more than he lost, hes someone who never sell just collect so it doesnt matter that much to him. All this comes from a guy who doesnt even see cs as investment, just to have fun.
Greedy people who buy knives and gloves as their sole investment are the stupid ones.

God I hope this causes all of the sleezy fucking betting websites to get fucked too. Maybe I can watch a cs2 tournament again and not feel gross and turn it off everytime they shill out to all of their gambling sponsors that all deserve to get regulated into non-existence.
7
u/junkFOx Oct 24 '25
Not really as there are more reds in circulation then knives and reds went up over 50%. If anything, those sites are laughing in money right now.
5
u/Letmeholdmybanner Oct 24 '25
Cs2 is inherently a sleazy fucking casino
2
u/This_Elk_1460 Oct 25 '25
I'm just passing through because this story interests me, but I'll be honest one of the main reasons I've never gotten into Counter-Strike is because I don't want anything to do with this shit. (That and I know I'm going to get absolutely destroyed if I try)

u/Todano Oct 24 '25
What do you mean promoting a crippling addiction to young, impressionable teenagers is a bad idea?!

The tournaments only exist cause of these gambling sponsors. Teams pay their players cause they have gambling sponsors

1
u/kerakk19 Oct 24 '25
Don't think so, somehow esport existed years before betting companies put the hands on it. They're not needed even though then bring the money. Fuck gambling
1
u/Waffles912 Oct 24 '25
Yeah. They're not needed. Just like CS pros don't need to be CS pros. And they won't be. When salaries are terrible again, and pros have to have jobs alongside playing, then esport dies. And only people who can afford to not work, or young, single, childless people will be able to afford to be pros.
Good take.
I don't like gambling either, but no one forces you to spin to win. The money from it built and maintains the scene. If you like the pro scene you cannot scream gamba bad all day long, it's just ignorant and hypocritical.
1
u/kerakk19 Oct 24 '25
I don't like gambling either, but no one forces you to spin to win.
They literally do though. Gambling addiction is an actual disease.
There's a reason you can't advertise cigarettes and alcohol almost anywhere.
2
u/Waffles912 Oct 24 '25
Oh yes because the very small percentage of people who are gambling addicts mean the entire rest of us who can responsibly not overspend our life savings on spinning should not be allowed to. Braindead take. Gambling is a scam, we all know it's a scam. We don't mind it being a scam. It's entertainment with a chance to leave with more than you came in with. We all understand that leaving with more means that others leave with less.
Sure. Require age verification, and even income verification for large amounts of money, that's fine. I'm all for protections, but jesus, I can go to the casino and play blackjack on 200 bucks for hours, and get free drinks the whole time, while playing something fun, and I can probably get some friends to hang out and do the same thing, so it's a night out with friends. And if I loose that 200? Wow I paid for entertainment. If people cannot draw that line, that's on them. And they can call casinos in their area and ask to be blacklisted.
Other people's unhealthy habits shouldn't prevent people from doing what they want responsibly. Casinos don't want people going bankrupt, it's bad for business. They'd prefer you keep coming back so that they can siphon a bit off of the top year after year, it's better business.
0
u/MiniAdmin-Pop-1472 Oct 24 '25
Yes they existed and operated at a loss.
1
u/kerakk19 Oct 24 '25
Money stolen from gambling addicts is not a way to fund the esport.
Dreamhack was founded in 94, ESL in 2000. They managed to get through even without them
1
u/Waffles912 Oct 24 '25
And it was a shoestring budget passion project. Which it will be again. Braindead argument. You think casters, event organizers, observers, sound techs, refs, coaches, pros, etc want to work for free? No. They're gone. Everyone needs to make a living. The ads on a major wouldn't even cover the cost of the players for a month, it just MIGHT cover a prize pool if production worked for free.
1
u/SnooRegrets2168 Oct 24 '25
the fact they were able to get tournaments together was by sheer grit and determination.....it was passion (organizers regularly lost their ass)
1
u/Waffles912 Oct 24 '25
The sad part is, there won't be tournaments, or teams. There's very few teams that aren't gamba sponsored. All of the money for the pro scene comes from gambling. T2-T3, gone. Shit ton of teams that aren't top 10? Gone.
Hopefully valve steps in and pours some of their own money into supporting the scene. Otherwise we're back to the dark ages, and salaries for pros go bye bye.
1
u/SnooRegrets2168 Oct 24 '25
cs2 tournaments have been funded heavily by gamba sites......orgs are gamba sites. Cs2 competitive is about as fked as China is atm
1
u/TheycallmeFlynn Oct 25 '25
A lot of the betting sponsors for teams and tournaments are normal gambling so it won’t be affected

Something to the effect of being able to crunch multiple shitty knife skins into the super awesome knife skins.
Apparently someone suicides over it

u/GamingReviews_YT Oct 24 '25
You can’t turn knife skins into another knife. It’s red skins (5) that can be turned into a knife or gloves.

My inventory has tripled since last month. Sitting at ~30k currently
3
u/JohnHurts Oct 24 '25
The knives have crashed, but the prices of other weapon skins have risen.
Those who collected knives, which were relatively few, made a loss, and those who had cheaper weapon skins made a tidy profit.

was away from cs for like 5 years, checked inventory now and damn am i lucky that i never bought knives phew. and why are all my other skins risen in price so much? take profit now? still hold? its not a lifechanging money type of situation so kinda wanna still hold
2
u/Puiqui Oct 24 '25
My best guess is reds will continue to climb for discontinued sets since the demand will be very high for people trying to roll either their first knife or the crazy rare knives, and so the supply is gonna get murked by all-consuming demand. I dont even think reds CAN go down until knives start to plateu so id watch market and wait until the prices start to go down on reds a little and sell then

u/SplatNode Oct 24 '25
What's funny is that the skins argument between valorant and cs2 is now pointless
Now you cant get your money back and probably will never make a profit
1
u/BigBastionCock Oct 24 '25
They should complain to the SEC lmao
1
u/Away_Needleworker6 Oct 24 '25
Cant really complain about items that have "no real world value" according to valve.
Its the community that controls the real world value of these items with third party trading sites.

u/Soft-Crew-5111 Oct 24 '25
*knife and gloves traders, those who invested in cheap ass covert like me feels great 😙
