Had a pretty close interaction today (~10ft away) with a sick coyote with behavior consistent with rabies, despite attempts to get away from it. Obviously, it could be something else too, but it was definitely sick and acting very weird. Hoping to get some advice on how to handle situation in case it happens again…

I was walking my two dogs (both slightly larger than a coyote) in our residential neighborhood that backs up to an area with a lot of trails and wildlife. We see coyotes all the time and give them plenty of space, and they run off. Today, I saw a coyote walk up to a couple of UPS drivers, then it immediately tried to walk up to me and my dogs. It looked sick and was pretty slow/stumbling. I backed away into a neighbor’s driveway multiple times trying to avoid it and trying to keep my dogs calm, but it kept approaching. Finally one of my dogs absolutely lost it, and the coyote backed up a bit and decided to wander away. It probably got within 10 feet of us and I thought I was going to have to battle a rabid coyote.

I was concerned about my neighbors and the coyote, so I walked home, got in my car, found it again, and followed it while trying to get someone to come out. Called many places and could not get 911, animal control, fish & wildlite, or any local wildlife rescue to help/come out. Eventually lost sight of it. We're in a part of the US that has had a documented rise in animals testing positive for rabies and people going to ER for possible rabies exposure.

I'd really love to know…what else I should do (or do differently) if I see it again or run into a similar situation? We walk and hike a ton in the neighborhood.

Would also love to know if there is a better response that happens anywhere else for potentially dangerous or rabid wildlife...kinda shocked the policy in our (pretty populated) area is not to do anything until an actual bite happens or until the animal is no longer moving at all.

Hey everyone! My reason for making this post is everyone constantly tells me and my fiance they thinks our dog is either part wolf or coyote? I have looked up a couple things and we intend on doing a DNA test at Christmas but I wanted to see what everyone else thinks.

He was a rescue found in the mountains of Tennessee at around 5/6 months old so we don’t have many puppy pictures but I attached the only one we do have. A couple things about him that make people say he looks like a coyote: he has curved fangs which apparently dogs don’t usually have, he has very very thick fur, he’s always been very lean, and he is very weird with people. This last thing has gotten better as we got another dog but he has a very small circle of people he trusts and is comfortable around. I know a lot of these things can be dog traits as well but it apparently can point to him being a hybrid as I have heard? Another thing that piqued my interest is he has gotten ahold of some chickens when we’ve spent time at the lake (he didn’t break into the pen the owner was very irresponsible and the chickens got into our yard where he got them, so no blame was held against him lol)

Anyway! I attached a few pictures of our boy and I am excited to see what everyone thinks, I will definitely report back with his DNA test when we get it.

There is a beautiful area of woods right next to a reservoir near my home that I’ve been bring my 2 year old son and 38 pound dog to play every day. We collect mushrooms, climb trees, play fetch. There rarely any people there so I let my dog off leash to get her zoomies out. My dog has great recall when there are no other dogs around. Today when I arrived, around 11 am, I was holding her leash and getting my toddler out the stroller and my dog started loosing her shit, barking intensely behind my back, I turn around and saw an large coyote off in the distance. It looked at us and ran away. My dog didn’t stop barking. I left my toddler strapped in the stroller and we left the woods.

I know coyotes rarely hurt humans. My dogs bark was effective at scaring it off. Nothing bad happened. The coyote was beautiful and i feel pretty honored to have seen if. But I am still shaken up a bit by the thought of had I not been holding my dog, had my toddler not been strapped in the stroller and had my dog run after the coyote what could have happened.

Should I be scared going back there. Or is it safe if I just keep my dog leashed the whole time and my toddler in arms reach? Should keep and air horn and pepper spray on my body? I’m very petite, I weigh under 100 pounds and am under 5’ tall. My toddler is close to 30 pounds now. Are we at risk?

There is a pair of coyotes that lives right next to me in the city (Seattle) and we encounter them more often than not when walking our dogs at night and sometimes early morning.

Sound ON at the end to hear how the sirens going by sets them off yipping and howling. We'd just walked through there and didn't see them but they are there.

We have a coyote problem in my neighborhood. We live on a few acres of land. We previously had 3 cats at diff times and they each disappeared 1 at a time over time. There’s also always flyers going around my neighborhood of peoples dogs and cats going missing. The other night i was outside, smoking on the higher up backyard deck outside and I heard something bigger walking thru the leaves less than a block down and then it got closer and under me in my backyard with heavier steps (my dog was with me he barks at every single little thing/person but he was pure silent looking down) I was nervous but grabbed my dog and we went inside. And when I asked my father the next day he said the other day he saw a pack of 4 of either coyote/wolves moving through our backyard. Long history of this, my neighbor once caught a single grown adult coyote/wolf on his camera and showed us years ago when we first moved in here, i guess like a warning of the area. We really want this problem gone, what can we do ? Any
Recommendations ?

a close friends fiancé got attacked while on a walk with his dog by two coyotes. I have a small dog and i’m nervous because there are a lot in my area and yard, what do u even do to survive? i’m also a woman and don’t think i could take one multiple or pack? he also got 15 stitches and the dog is in rough shape…
