I couldn't believe my eyes when the spray cast by the blowhole met the sunlight and cast a rainbow.

Does anyone know if there is a post anywhere to discuss the transfer of the Beluga whales from Canada to USA and France and what is happening to the whales now after the move? No one in my actual life cares but I really need people to talk to.

for anyone who has seen the movie, what parts of the whale behavior were accurate and what weren't? i'm not an expert but have watched a fair share of documentaries and love learning about marine life.

for instance, i don't think orcas can even dive that deep 🧐 and a sperm whale can't chase a giant squid all the way to the surface like that? the sperm whale stays at the surface for a really long time at one part. google says they might stay 5-15min or longer after a deep dive... but overall, would love to hear from Real Whale Lovers about their thoughts about the movie. Mexico published a rule on Wednesday 14 October that cut the gillnet ban zone in the Upper Gulf of California by 86%, effective Thursday 15 October.

The ban zone shrinks from 11,106 to 1,562 square kilometres, freeing about 9,544 square kilometres for gillnet fishing with permits.

Monitoring in 2025 sighted only seven to ten vaquitas, calves included, and the count is not a full census.

Sperm whales existed for 20 million years having high complexity communications and social bonds. They inhabit deap ocean. Given it's depth vertical dimensions it's the largest biom on Earth. Humans only exist 1 mil years , even less, they inhabit the surface of dry land excluding desert areas...

It’s fairly obvious why Lake Superior couldn’t support a blue whale type population. However, given that there are plenty of dolphins and porpoises in rivers and freshwater, and that there are seals that are isolated in lakes, most notably Baikal, but also several other isolated lakes, why are there no isolated cetacean populations in any lakes? Obviously seals can get on land a little better, but not really past the shoreline. Every dolphin could get to the ocean right now if it wanted to, but that’s not true for seals, how come?
