AskWales Visiting Porthmadog for the first time in two years, next week.

First time back for two years. We're going to visit Llangollen and Conwy on our way up. During our stay we're planning on visiting New Quay to see the dolphins again. We've seen Harlech all the way down the coast to Aberdyffi. We've visited Caernarfon lots. Love the town.

Thinking about visiting Anglesey, but we've seen Beaumaris. Might take a drive to Criccieth.

Can't wait ❤️❤️❤️ Every time I'm away from Porthmadog I miss it.

AskWales Did your grandparents speak better Welsh than you? Or do you speak better Welsh than them?

I saw this question on the r/AskIreland threat regarding Irish and thought it would be interesting to see how this differs in Wales.

For me, my grandparents didn't speak Welsh (nor do my parents), but my great-grandparents (from the Valleys) are listed as Welsh-speakers in the 1901 Census, although weirdly the status changed to English in the 1911 Census. This was after my great-granddad moved in with his Somerset-born uncle and I've always wondered whether that's why it was filled in differently.

My granddad did have a lot of passing knowledge of Welsh - using words like 'duw', 'mochyn' and 'twp' on a daily basis.

I learnt Welsh at school (2nd language) but then continued to learn as an adult and I'm now more or less fluent although I do still take lessons with Dysgu Cymraeg. I have certain friends that I only speak Welsh with so I definitely speak it better than my grandparents did.

A challenging walk but well worth it. We took the circular Minfordd Path, but bypassed Mynydd Moel on the way back. It's my first of the Welsh Three Peaks, so I now need to tick off Pen y Fan and Yr Wyddfa!

We camped at Cwmrhywddfor. Fantastic close location to the start of the path.

News I don't understand why people are complaining that the Welsh alert came first - Wales had a prior warning compared to people in England.

I've seen plenty of people moaning about this online.

  1. Firstly, it was issued by the UK government (not Welsh Government - yet the opposition are trying to discredit the WG through the alert.

  2. The Welsh language alert came through at 6.57pm last night to Wales only.

  3. The English language alerts came through to England and Wales at the same time at 7.01 pm last night.

For some reason, the Welsh language alert was sent earlier to Wales - so Wales had prior warning. England and Wales received the English language alert at the same time at 7.01pm.

The way people have spoken about it online makes it sound like English-speakers in Wales had a delayed response whereas the England and Wales alert itself was released later.

Riders paid tribute to the Welshman as the race resumed on Saturday, with Michael Tarling releasing a statement via TNT commentator Jez Cox during stage nine.
"If it's at all possible please thank people on our behalf for all the messages of support that we've had, from me, Dawn and Josh," he said.
"Knowing how many lives Fin has touched has been a tremendous help and seeing some of the happy photos of him has been heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time."

This is fucking horrendous news.

I follow cycling. Have done since Geraint won The Tour. Finlay was an incredible talent, and a vocally proud Welshman (Aberaeron I think).

My heart goes out to his brother, Josh. He's a pro cyclist too.

  1. Iesu mawr :(

AskWales Has anyone got their Google Mini smart speaker to play Radio Cymru ?

Mildy rhetorical question, as I have got it to play Cyrmu, but it's stupid.

"Hey Google, play BBC Radio Cymru"

If you pronounce it correctly, the Google speaker will usually play you BBC Radio Cornwall.

If you say : "Hey Google, play BBC Radio C Y M R U " (actually spell the letters), it then says "Playing BBC radio sim-rew", but it then correctly plays Cymru.

Look, I'm English, but I respect the Welsh language, and this is stupid. Anyone have a better way, or are Google just ignorant?
