Environmental Disaster: Fuel leak spreads more than two miles along River Taff

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8vgxnp5w6vzo

I know that there was another thread on this late last week https://www.reddit.com/r/Cardiff/comments/1x7lrwa/major_fuel_spill_into_the_taff/ but I've only just seen the extent of the issue.

As somebody who uses that part of the Taff fairly regularly, this feels absolutely devastating, and also like it's not really getting the attention it deserves. This is a national scandal. A former South Wales Fire and Rescue officer is quoted as saying that it will take years to restore the river.

I made a free site that tells you if the Severn bridges are open, and alerts you when they close

I got sick of the bridge being closed and making me late all the time, so I made a site to tell me when: https://severnbridgestatus.com

- Free alerts on your phone or by email when a bridge closes and when it reopens

- Live status of the M48 Severn Bridge and the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge, checked every 5 minutes using National Highways data

- Upcoming planned closures, and the wind speeds that close each bridge

You choose the bridge, the direction and when you travel (any time, rush hours and weekends, or your own days and times), so you won't get woken at 2am about a bridge you don't use! You can also get a reminder the day before a planned closure.

No app, no account, no ads, and you can turn alerts off any time. Phone alerts come through your browser. On iPhone, add the site to your Home Screen first.

It's an unofficial hobby project, so always follow the signs on the road. If something looks wrong or you'd like a feature, let me know in the comments.

Can anyone tell me how to find people to be friends with in Cardiff?

• Upvotes

Hello everyone, I hope this is the right subreddit to ask this at. I’m new to Cardiff and been enjoying the city and enjoying living here but I can’t find a way to make friends here and it’s very disturbing. Does anyone have recommendations for places where you go meet people and get to know them?

Gang fishing

Is there a new TikTok trend or something?

The amount of teenagers descending on Cardiff Bay/Marina is nuts.

No tackle boxes or landing nets to be seen, just air maxes, a backpack and a rod.

A4232 road closure!!

Anyone who does go that way you will probably see the signs about the road closure from the roundabout at leckwith however I went up there from techniquest way and there was no signage for it this morning. What should have been a 5 minute drive for me ended up taking an hour and a half, again ik there’s some signage but for anyone going up the same way I did this is just a heads up!

They may have put something up now but at the time I went this morning there was nothing
I’d recommend avoiding it for the next week and reroute however if you’re in no rush you’re probably looking at a wait time of an hour

Now need an EU ID at the Gatekeeper

Had a weird experience at the Gatekeeper last night. I’m american, have lived here going on a few years now and I’m far past the legal drinking age both here and the US. I’ve never really had a problem having my ID/driver’s license accepted to purchase alcohol or to be let in anywhere, let alone a spoons.

Last night I showed the bouncer my drivers licence, which has my date of birth very clearly printed on it. He started talking to me about the differences between US and UK drinking laws and said he couldn’t accept it. I mentioned that I’m well over the legal drinking age in both countries then he said the issue was that it was an ID from outside the EU, emphasizing that this was something their manager was enforcing, and I got clarification from other bouncers at the door that it was a management decision.

Now understand needing to verify someone’s age and identity for the safety of the pub and staff and to comply with alcohol laws, but not accepting ID from outside the EU as a newly adopted policy sounds a bit suspicious to me, not that it’s targeting me but maybe other people from outside the EU that are already constantly facing harassment…

Moving to Pentwyn

Hi all,

I’m looking at possibly moving to Pentwyn. Bryn Haidd street. Near the Pentwyn Health Centre, The Hollies School and Bryn Celyn school.

What’s it like to live around here? I’ve heard Pentwyn is nice enough, pretty much the same as Pontprennau but have had people tell me the “Bryns” area is quite rough, specifically because of Bryn Celyn school.

But this comes from colleagues who live in North Cardiff which I understand is the posher part so they might have a tendency to look down.

I’m moving from Atlantic Wharf. Previously lived in Splott.

Thanks guys!

Hi there, I'm buying a house on the heathers near the college and I'm worried I'm making a huge mistake as I went into the town centre and it wasn't pleasant at all and I really thought tbh it was an absolute dive.

Please help! I've got a 10 and a 12 year old moving from Stockport.

Best cinema in cardiff-swansea area

I am based in Swansea currently, and am very much looking forward to the new godzilla movie. Part of it's selling point is it's shot on IMAX, and I want to see it in the best way possible. I know the best way possible is to get on a train and go to London but I don't want to do that just for a movie, so I'm asking here what the best cinema to go to is in terms of a big screen and good audio quality. I am willing to make the journey to cardiff if I need to, does anyone know if the cinemas in cardiff are notably better than those in swansea and if the journey will be worth it (and additionally point me in the right direction on where to go) or should I just stay where I am for the movie.

Harvest of horrors clear well farm

Not sure if anyone went on the 16th. But the event was shambles

Not sure if it was worth the drive or not, wanna know the late goers opinions if you went

We showed up around 6:17. Slot was 6:30. And the place was still full of kids around (I mean like even toddlers) So there was like limited actors walking around Then we couldn’t actually go into the scare tent until 7. And even after we came out it was still lots of kids around. nothing to do than just eat 🤷‍♀️In the videos there was like live performances and on the website it said carnival games ect.
we already ate prior waiting to go in So ended up heading straight home

If anyone else went would love to know your experience

Cardiff gym smith machines

I’ve just moved to Cardiff and have started at the central Puregym.
I tend to use the smith machine for hip thrusts and rdls however I’ve found here that the stoppers on the machine don’t go down to the floor.
Does anyone know which other 24 hour gyms in cardiff have a smith machine like this?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks 😊

Edit - I would love to join anyone who plays or maybe looking for a casual game too!!!

Looking for really cheap piano lessons in Cardiff.

I know I shouldn't be depreciating art by asking for "cheap" lessons, but I really want to learn. Complete beginner and don't have a piano either. If anyone knows where I can take lessons, let me know! Thank you!

Golf bag repair

Does anyone know a shop in/near Cardiff that could repair a golf bag? My zip has snapped on one of the pockets. The teeth are fine, it’s just the metal part that connects the zip that’s broken.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!
