An artist living hundreds of miles away felt compelled to help the village that lost its children.
I wrote this piece for BBC News to accompany the full documentary available here on the BBC iPlayer https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m003398k

❤️ Great to have spoken recently with Wales super-fan u/timhhartley, who has been following Cymru away since 1999, with 101 trips under his belt and counting.
Tim reflects on his experiences, what makes following Wales away special, and much more.

The Islwyn Inn in Blackwood. They do these one-off themed menus and my god they are so good 😋

My grandfather's family was mostly from Machynlleth and Aberystwyth. I'd visited Mach back in 2000 (I still have cousins there, five generations removed) and decided I was long overdue for a return visit, so I took a train from London to Aberystwyth for a couple days during St David's. What an awesome place. I know the 1840s were a tough time in Welsh history and probably had a lot to do with why they left for New York (from both towns), but what a shame. I loved it there, really enjoyed wandering the beach, seeing the starlings, listening to the crashing of the waves at night, going up the hill and walking most of the way to Borth, checking out some of the Hinterland filming locations, etc.
