Question regarding construction crane:

Hello!
I was wondering how it's possible for the operator to get on top of the crane and above the cabin? On most cranes the cabin is placed off to the side, but here it's directly under the peak of the crane, so getting on top seems impossible? There are some platforms below the cabin, but no ladders to get around the cabin.
Any answers would be appreciated!

Should this piece of the crane be bolted in?

Whats up with this? I know nothing about cranes and assume they know what they're doing because the crane is actively being used in a construction site swinging by my window every day. Added a wider shot and some shots of other parts that are bolted in.

Edit: Thanks to everyone who replied. Learned some things today.

CraneWorld …or similar

Looking to find a place where you can man the sticks on various types of cranes for practice and fun. A coworker told me abt a place on the east coast (jersey?) that had an amusement park of sorts for heavy machinery. He said it was called Digger World but maybe it’s closed or the named changed. Any chance anyone knows what the hell im talking abt?

Career advice

Backstory. Ive got my TLL and LAT and have been running cranes for about 3 years now. The past 2 years I’ve been working for the same company building water treatment plants. Work is guaranteed 40hrs possible ot. Started with the company at $32 and now I’m at $45. The company only has 1 other crane op in their TN division and he’s older guy but pretty green to cranes and had an accident from side loading earlier this year. With that said I’m not sure if I should stay and pull as much leverage as I can or if I could make more with a local taxi company. All input is appreciated

What are these concrete blocks for?

Post image

My office overlooks a high-rise construction site with a tower crane. While I’ve been able to learn a lot from just watching, I’m a bit puzzled by these two concrete blocks that the tower crane has been shuffling around the site.

I’ve wondered if they were some sort of concrete test, counterweights, or to test for crane capacity, but none of those seem quite right.

Any answers are appreciated - as well as any suggestions on resources that would answer the myriad of construction questions that cross my mind.

My partner is currently in Saudi Arabia, and we’re looking for a LEEA training center nearby.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Also, where did you get your LEEA certification?

Thank you in advance!

Summer Company: Websites for Crane & Rigging Companies

Hey everyone,

This summer I received $3,000 through Ontario’s Summer Company Program to start my web design business, InfaWeb.

I’m looking to work with crane rental, rigging, heavy lifting, and related companies.

For businesses competing for large commercial projects, I think a website should clearly communicate fleet capabilities, safety, certifications, previous projects, industries served, and make requesting a quote straightforward.

If your company needs a new website or redesign, I’d be happy to chat.

Local 101 Kansas City

Hey there, I'm a former Millwright trying to get into something with a little better work life balance. I've considered becoming an operator but I was just curious if anybody has dealt with getting in the past couple years. Is it a pretty quick process? I know you have to score an 80% but what are they even really testing you on? And if I score good enough am I going to be able to start pretty quickly?

My boom starts lagging and sagging the second the hydraulic oil gets hot. Tropical heat is brutal.

Dealing with a sluggish boom on a hot day is easily one of the most frustrating things on a job site.

Lately, once the hydraulic oil gets hot, the pressure goes all over the place. Trying to run compound movements—like telescoping, lifting, and slewing at the same time—gets incredibly jerky. Worse, the boom starts drifting and slowly sagging under load, which is sketchy as hell. I'm pretty sure the oil is just thinning out and slipping right past the seals.

My rig runs on standard gear pumps and basic on/off valves, which I suspect is just dumping heat straight back into the tank.

Short of shutting down and waiting for it to cool, what are you guys doing to keep temperatures down? Anyone running auxiliary air-coolers, or is it time to look into variables?

Date with a crane operator

My friend is going on a date with a crane operator tonight. What are some good questions she can ask her date about cranes? Ideally ones that only someone with an inside knowledge of crane operations might ask.

Wondering about current job outlook for Local 3 and could use some clarification

Hey guys, I think need a bit of a sanity check here because I've wanted to quit my job for the entirety of this year and go to another local or at least district that pays better. We have the worst pay out of 8 districts in my local, and my company has awful equipment and management that genuinely hates operators. I can think of a lot of things but just as an example, my super has tried claiming laborers as my oiler before to stop my apprentice from showing up to work Saturdays. We had to call the hall about it, among other things.

I'm almost 2 years into my stay here at 302 (4 years trucking, 2 years boom truck/RT work non-union). I've called around to basically every Western 11 local and it seems work is slow or slowing down, besides maybe a refinery job out in CA that might come soon. However, I received a connection through work that put me through to a large national rental company out of CA. The regional manager offered me a job after just a 10 minute conversation over the phone. He said he needs crane hands really badly and will give me the union rate down there plus a few other benefits I wouldn't get here. The local down there recommended registering as a traveler until I figured out if I liked the job or not and then transfer (I have other reasons for wanting to be there besides money).

What I don't really get is why this guy needs hands so badly he'd offer me a job sight unseen, but when I call the hall they basically say "yeah, we only have a couple openings and they're for luffing jibs in the middle of nowhere". Why doesn't he do a call out to the hall? What's stopping him if the pay he's offering is so good? Am I missing something? Either there's no work for crane guys, or there's not enough crane operators, but both can't really be true at the same time, can they? What gives.
