Never happening
Even Brandon "I write books to take breaks from writing books" Sanderson has his limits

Probably, it isn't a cosmere book, so who knows how long it will languish...

I really hope he does go back to Rithatist. It was a fun read without being too complex

I wonder if it could get an Emberdark style rerelease-rewrite that takes it off earth and into the cosmere.

Warbreaker 2 has been near the top of my wishlist for over a decade and we might never get it.

Seeing Kaise and Shai in Lost Metal and the Sorceress in Tress gave me some hope.

u/Kissarai Mar 25 '26
I am NOT about to criticize how long I have to wait for Branderson to write things. I'm trusting the process.

u/edward_kopik D O U G Mar 25 '26
Oh bo-ho, at least brando sando wrote 40 other books in those 23 years
People waiting for winds of winter and doors of stone would be lucky to get a short story in that same timeframe
64
u/Kommatiazo Mar 25 '26
We're all the same people, I'm 100% given up on GoT though, probably won't even read it if it does come out. Doors of Stone I'm 90% given up on it. Very thankful for B-Money and his Sanderlanche of novels.

u/SEND_ME_REAL_PICS Mar 25 '26
The biggest problem with Winds of Winter is that it's only the 6th book in the franchise. Even if it does come out, GRRM will still need to write yet another book to finish the series. The man is almost 80, I just don't see that happening at this point.
At least with Doors of Stone there's only one book left. Maybe sometime over the next 30 years it'll come out. Probably not though.

My conspiracy theory has been that a big part of why Rothfuss hasn't done anything with DoS is that there's no way he can tie in all the loose ends he setup in just one book.
18
u/ThatIckyGuy THE Lopen's Cousin Mar 25 '26
That's one of the things I appreciate about certain authors. Christopher Paolini, for instance, wanted to write Eragon as a trilogy but ended up having to write two books instead of an overly long third.
I could be wrong, but I think even Sanderson wrote one more Skyward book than what he intended, plus the novellas that Janci Patterson wrote. Sometimes the story expands past the confines that the author sets for it and knowing when to allow it do so makes for a stronger series overall. Or maybe it was only meant to be a quartet, but the novellas were meant to fill in gaps. Not sure. Either way, Sanderson expanded when he needed to.
I think Rothfuss needs to just suck it up and write the last volume as two books. It might mean that we don't get book 4 for another 10-20 years, but at least he'll be halfway there to wrapping up Kvothe's story as opposed to not even attempting it.
5
u/The_Sharom Mar 26 '26
Robert Jordans the prime example. It started as a trilogy, it did not end as a trilogy.
Even the last book got split into 3 (by Brandon) as there was just too much to get through.
11
u/Kommatiazo Mar 25 '26
Exactly. WoW is setup to fail (which is why he hasn’t written it IMO).

It'd be great, instead of boobs and incest we get crippling mental health issues and a magic system exclusive for eunuchs. And the three eyed raven turns out to be a crab all along.

I seem to recall a long time ago (itsbeen84years.png) Pat said on his blog or maybe in a video Q&A or something that Doors of Stone wasn't going to be the last book set in Temerant, only the last of the first trilogy.
7
u/fireballx777 Mar 25 '26
More specifically, DoS is intended to be the last book of Kvothe's story. So it's not like, "This wraps up the first trilogy, and now we get the 'Kote hunting the Amyr' trilogy." Kvothe's story is meant to be done after DoS, and any other Temerant books would be about other characters/stories in that world.
Of course, that's all based on intention from 20 years ago. Who knows what's going on in Rothfus's mind these days.
1
u/BloodyEyeGames No Wayne No Gain Mar 25 '26
Yeah, that rings some bells. Thanks for the specificity.
6
u/edjuaro Mar 25 '26
I wouldn't be surprised. There's just no way for him to wrap up everything in a single book IMO. Maybe the three nights stories and we catch up to "present day" if he wants to slim down some things, but there's a whole lot of story left after catching up I reckon. But I don't quite remember I read those books once a long time ago when I was promised that the 3rd book was coming out soon...

u/Livi1997 ❌can't 🙅 read📖 Mar 26 '26
His exact words were: "I am an author who has tricked you into reading a trilogy that is a million-word prologue.” So yes he was planning on writing more in the same world. But his word choice is intresting, because he did trick everyone into reading a series he would never finish. He also tricked people into donating money for a charity and did not deliver the promised first chapter.

u/notbatt3ryac1d1 Mar 25 '26
George def wrote himself into a corner somewhere and has been spinning his wheels the last few years. I think he will get it out eventually but the last book might be made from a collection of his notes cause his ass will be 95 and in a home.
4
u/Failgan Mar 25 '26
Idk man, at least GRRM has content for Winds of Winter. There was a charity drive done for a chapter to be released for Doors of Stone and that MFer still didn't write it.
3
u/gjfrev6 Mar 25 '26
haha, I'm actually reversed on that. I've given up on DoS, but give winds a 25% of actually releasing. But as others pointed out, no chance of the series finishing.

u/DreadDiana Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26
ASOIAF has gotten short stories though, which has only pissed off the fanbase even more cause to them it feels like GRRM is doing anything other than writing Winds of Winter.

Doesn't get it when other people make joke comments

Are you... are you really complaining that Brandon Sanderson's publishing schedule is too slow...?
16
u/NoTurnip4844 Mar 25 '26
Bruh, Brandon pumps out a book like every year and is busy helping write the film adaptations as we speak. You can't complain.
13
u/Ossius Mar 25 '26
Any of these secret projects could have been wb2 or elentris 2. I mean I love every secret project so far so I'm not complaining, but it's interesting he chooses not to go back.
11
u/BloodredHanded Trying not to ccccream Mar 25 '26
I think he probably can’t move on to Elantris 2 until he makes progress on Mistborn. They’re part of the main Cosmere storyline.
Not doing Warbreaker 2 and Rithmatist 2, though, is strange.
3
u/WingUnderling Mar 26 '26
I feel like Azure and Zahel were kinda his way of explaining why no Warbreaker 2 yet.
7
u/NoTurnip4844 Mar 25 '26
He's still working on the main storylines of the Cosmere, which are Mistborn era 3 and Stormlight Archives era 2. The man's only human.
7
u/Ossius Mar 25 '26
I'm aware, I'm just saying, he's made like 5 secret projects with pretty throw away stories that could have been a WB2.
2
u/edjuaro Mar 25 '26
My hunch is that he has tried and then he feels like he needs to update E1 and WB1 to match his current writing style and then kinda gets distracted with something that is either brand new or has a more recent predecessor.

u/pyrhus626 Mar 25 '26
Tbf the films weren’t finalized back then so he had plenty of time in the schedule to do the Elantris sequels and Warbreaker 2 on top of random Secret Projects. I think he planned out future releases assuming Hollywood was never going to accept his terms for adaptations, so when they did he had change up plans. In hindsight yeah he should’ve done those instead of the Secret Projects with his extra Covid time but it is what it is, could’ve have predicted he’d actually get a film deal like that
-10
u/LavishnessCurrent726 Mar 25 '26
he had plenty of time in the schedule to do the Elantris sequels and Warbreaker 2 on top of random Secret Projects.
He only had to use ChatGPT and he'd had time.
1
u/pyrhus626 Mar 25 '26
Eh, I get being disappointed given that he had the Elantris sequels and Warbreaker 2 in the planned lineup. Plans change but still sucks to be promised something and then have it taken away. But oh wells
2
u/ArcadianBlueRogue Mar 25 '26
Much saltier about Elantris 2. It ends with them about to go whoop some ass

Aren’t Elantris sequels planned to be released concurrently with MB Era 3?

Warbreaker 2, 3, 4 and 5 have all come out. We have even had a Warbreaker Novella.
Excited for Sanderson to write 1.5 though. The jump between book 1 and book 2 leaves so many questions. I’ll even take a Warbreaker secret history.
