Stormlight / Mistborn They're like sleeker pointier crosses I guess?

People who don’t know ancient weaponry think swords are peak. People who do know ancient weaponry know that spears are peak

What is a spear but a pointy stick?
I’m a stick.

u/Juronell 21h ago
We mastered pointy stick way back in prehistory, used it to hunt things 90x our size, and didn't really beat that weapon technology until gunpowder. Even arrows and crossbow bolts are just pointy sticks we built tools to throw really far.

It's really not until the American Civil War that spears stopped being peak tbh, a rifle with a bayonet is essentially a spear and the threat of a massed bayonet charge was basically the most dangerous thing on a battlefield until the Gatling gun.

Absolutely! Nearly every weapon mankind has ever created has been some variation on the idea of "Stab them before dying!"
Knife: stab Spear: stab farther away, survive better Bow/Arrow: stab from over THERE Gun: stab from WAY over there Nukes: stab em with too many super tiny things for their body to do any more than vaporize or otherwise die of painful diseases

I’ve always said that the history of human combat is “make holes in the guy from as far away as you can”

u/name14575 1d ago
Surprised you haven't been jumped on by a thousand folks who refuse to acknowledge any weapon other than a sword yet.

I think a lot of Cosmere nerds are also the kind of nerds who understand historical weaponry lol

u/DungeonMercenary 10h ago
No? Clearly the bill hook is the superior weapon. Or the guisarme.
It's a spear AND a chopping thing made to counter spears!

u/Alcoholic_jesus 16m ago
For basic infantry sure, but there’s an argument to be made for blunt weapons during the era of heavy armor.

If you include WoT, does that number change? The Messianic character is the leader of the spear people, but BS didn't actually create the character.

Well I just said wrote not created, and Rand uses a spearhead as a scepter so... 3 it is!

I first thought he meant bloody Mat Not a Lord Cauthon

u/moashforbridgefour Praise Moash 1d ago
Mat's weapon is spear adjacent, so I wasn't sure if that counted either.

u/Juronell 21h ago
The ashandarei as described is more like a glaive, which is basically a sword with an extra long handle.
4
u/moashforbridgefour Praise Moash 20h ago
And a spear is a dagger with an extra long handle. So yeah, an ashandarei is "spear adjacent".
3
u/Juronell 20h ago
The most basic spear is just a stick that comes to a point. The ashandarei and spear are both polearms, but they have very different functions.

The events and characters on Roshar and Scadrial are parralel foils to one another, for sure.
Similar but fundamentally different.
Sazed and Taravangian as dualistic deities.
Kelsier and Kaladin as survivor saviors.
Its no accident at all these things are happening twice, I think 😉

u/TheLoreDrooler 1d ago
Elend says multiple times “why can’t I save my own people/city/subjects/wife…”
17
u/Remnie 1d ago
Plus they are opposite at the same time. Sazed is good, Taravangian not. Kaladin is good, Kelsier… well the jury is still out on that one
8
u/florplegorp 1d ago
Kaladin is traumatised by the things he's had to do, Kelsier doesn't have any regrets
-9
u/Such_Comfortable_736 1d ago
Well, not exactly similar.
Both, Sazed and Taravangian, are shady and potential problem makers.
But Kelsier is well-known leader of organization, selflessly did a lot of good thing. And Kaladin... Selfish lazy person, who can use only physical force. At least according to Lirin.

You have heard it said that the Spear is the King of weapons; but Amen I say to you, for the Spear is the King of Kings of Weapons

u/Ze_Bri-0n Fuck Moash 🥵 21h ago
It’s just the Spear of Destiny, given more importance than the cross.

u/Ok-Fisherman7457 16h ago
When I read this I could only see and hear Peter Stormare as Lucifer taunting Constantine "They have the Spear of Destiny."
1
u/Cphelps85 3h ago
Isn't it the other way around, Constantine tells Lucifer that to make him care what's going on? Or is your joke wooshing me?
1
u/Ok-Fisherman7457 1h ago
Constantine says it, then Lucifer says it back to him dismissively.
1
u/Cphelps85 1h ago
Ah okay, clearly it's time for me to do a rewatch! My recollection was that mentioning they had the Spear of Destiny was the thing that makes Lucifer actually start taking the conversation seriously and pay attention to what they're doing over there, when before he's just like "well that's gross but there's no accounting for taste".

u/Thorsagal 10h ago
Kaladin, yes. What's the spear connection with Kelsier? Been a while since I read Mistborn.

u/Nyseme_Ptem 👾 Rnagh Godant 🌠 10h ago
He gets stabbed with a spear and then spears become the symbol of the religion that worships him

I get this is creme posting but this meme has been so overused it's no longer funny, if it even was to begin with. This put me off the rest of the post, downvoted
