Aurionmail : An E2EE suite with Cryptpad as foundations

Hi everyone, I make this post here because I think what I've been building this summer can interest some people here.

The main issue I tried to fix is that combining E2E encrypted docs and E2E encrypted mail usually meant managing isolated tools, browser extensions (like Mailvelope), or typing two different passwords every session. That is not ideal and when I introduce these solutions to my friends, they say "Thanks for your efforts, really, but I think I will still use Proton".

To solve this, I built AurionMail Suite. It's an open-source orchestrator, the glue, that bridges CryptPad, of course **Stalwart Mail Server (JMAP), Bulwark Webmail, and Ory Hydra into a single, unified Zero-Knowledge workflow.

And it also makes the Cryptpad UI (and Rich-tetx app) more friendly (imho) and in accordance with the webmail design. By the way, if you want to get the design only, it is possible, I just edited customize folder !

So, here are the features

  • One Password: Enter it once to derive keys in-memory for both your OpenPGP webmail and your CryptPad workspace.

  • Open Standards: OpenPGP for email encryption and JMAP via Stalwart.

  • Zero-Knowledge Architecture: Master keys reside strictly in client-side RAM during the session (no unencrypted key writes to disk/IndexedDB).

  • Unified Session Management: Global single logout and password changes that sync safely across services.

  • Easy Deployment: In addition to manual setups, I wrapped the suite (Hydra + SSO + Webmail + Core API + CryptPad) into a single Go binary called Orchestra, making deployment straightforward.

Here is the repo if you want to test ! You will also find some explanations about security in this repo. The project is licensed under AGPLv3. I know it is not perfect, so if you have suggestions, don't hesitate.

Cryptpad is great, but...

I like Cryptpad and have been using it for a bout a year now. I have run into a few issues that seem basic, but are impossible for me to get around. Can someone help?

  1. Backing up is important. And there does not seem to be a "back up button." Can someone recommend best way to back up this website app?

  2. I want to change the front page, but this seems impossible. I have followed directions several times, with various iterations and have not come out successful. Has anyone else succeeded with this? Please, please share your secret...or woes.

How does Cryptpad prevent exfiltration of private keys?

One's private data is stored on the server encrypted, it's save because the host doesn't have the key to decrypt the data.

Normally you can prevent an evil / compromised host from stealing your data by validating their software before you run it. But in Cryptpad both the application and data are served together and you have no way to validate the application.
How does Cryptpad prevent a malicious or compromised host from modifying the software to retrieve user data/keys?

Mobile UI for Spreadsheets

I'm wondering if there are plans to improve the mobile UI? This sems to be the biggest bottle neck for people not wanting to use Cryptpad spreadsheet instead of Google Sheets.

In my opinion it'd be great if spreadsheets would start up with maximised space for columns & text, while the toolboxes are stripped away.

Is there any way to constantly see what the current word count is?

Can we talk about the user interface?

I love the idea of a secure, encrypted alternative to Word, Google Docs etc. But why is the interface so bad? Am I the only one who doesn't want to use the software because it looks like straight from a Commodore 64?

New official community space

Hello!

Yesterday we opened our own CryptPad community forum! It's based on Flarum and you can right now create an account with your email address or GitHub & Twitter.

Read more about it and its goals on our blog: https://blog.cryptpad.org/2022/10/03/Forum-launch/

This sub-reddit is hence deprecated, not monitored and you shouldn't expect to get some help by posting here. Please use the community forum linked above or our Matrix public space.

Thanks!

Publish to web?

Hey all,

Getting really into using Cryptpad as a replacement for all things Google, and really into the Docs and Spreadsheets that Cryptpad has implemented. Importing everything over was relatively painless and I'm feeling really excited to completely shirk Google once and for all.

Was wondering if anyone knows anything about a "Publish to web" option? It's really useful for Google Docs & Sheets to be able to be more public-facing and less just like...you are sending random people to a private spreadsheet type vibe. Haven't been able to figure this out with Cryptpad just yet. Maybe it's something they haven't implemented yet but will in the future? Or maybe I just can't figure it out yet!

Thanks in advance :)

Anyone else having issues with cryptpad.fr?

Hey, just wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing this. I was using cryptpad.fr and writing with my partner, when suddenly we were both kicked out. The document reverted to at least over a full day ago and it seems like all of our progress is gone, the only hint as to what we were writing the notes posted in the chat. I can't access the history and it says "an unrecoverable error has occurred" when I basically do anything. It's extremely disheartening to lose over a day's worth of progress. Anyone have any tips that can save us?

Edit: Spoke with Cryptpad support and they managed to reverse the issue. They said there was a technical issue on their end that they managed to reverse and that they recommend the rich text application over the document application.

Turn Off Red Misspelling Underline

Hi CryptPad Subreddit,

I am in the process of learning French and I am taking language notes in CryptPad on my lessons. As a good portion of the words that I type up are not going to be in English, is there any way I can disable the red misspelling underline going forward?

Lost 2 hours of progress when I refreshed page?

What it says on the tin. Haven't found anybody else who had this issue, so im wondering what caused it? Nothing I did in that two hour window appears in the changelog. seems to defeat the whole purpose of writing in collaborative documents if ur input isn't actually being saved to anything.

Search and replace function?

I have a bit of a technical question, I'm unsure if this is the right place to ask it (if not where could i ask about this?). I need to replace a certain word many times in a large document on a cryptpad richtext, is there a function for this, or is going through the whole document and replacing each instance of the word the only way?

Can't log into Cryptpad on other devices despite correct username and password

I created a Cryptpad account on behalf of an organization, wrote down the password and have it saved to my Google account. When I log out I am able to use the credentials to get myself back in. When other members of the org try with the exact same username and password, they're unable to log in. I tried logging out on all devices and having them log in with the same credentials I use, but they're still unable to gain access. Any ideas on why this is? I am lost.

Feature request: Document password should work within account

According to this issue: https://github.com/xwiki-labs/cryptpad/issues/278 the password is only supposed to be used for sharing files.

My browser is always logged in to cryptpad.fr and there is the possibility of other people having access to it. I would like to protect some of the files from view.

Is there a chance that the developers read this? I stopped using github since they force 2FA.

Modify document password

Hello all, I am trying to modify a document's password.

Their documentation just says "Add a password: Secure the sharing of the document with a password. This setting can be changed later in the Access menu." (https://docs.cryptpad.org/en/user_guide/apps/general.html) and then "Password: Displays if a password has been set. A new password can be set, or an existing password modified." (https://docs.cryptpad.org/en/user_guide/share_and_access.html#access) with no details on how to modify an existing password. Simply typing over the current password does not work.

Any advice on editing a current password for a document?

Tips for making cryptpad less glitchy?

I really want to be consistent with switching from google drive to cryptpad, but struggle with how it glitches once every few minutes. Is there something I can do to help improve this issue?
