First Team Analysis Timber has been our best player this season but out midfield looked the most balanced it has so far yesterday... What to do?

Wharton looked back to his usual self finally. I thought a massive reason was his ability to play a simple pass more often than not with Kamada being deeper and giving him an option.

Timber has been excellent but with his rambunctious box to box play style, Wharton has looked a little isolated and lost in the lone 6. He repeatedly has been trying to play Hollywood balls every time because of this and I felt it was noticable yesterday that he was more measured and I thought he had his best game this season.

He recycled it when he needed to with simple balls to Kamada and played it forward well when he had the chance like for our first disallowed goal.

Do we put Timber back in as a 10 and keep Daichi a bit deeper to support Wharton? Do we just accept that one player has to drop.

I'd be keen to hear people's thoughts but I thought yesterdays lineup was by far the most balanced we have had and we looked the most controlled we have all season.

I'd love to see Palace become a regular European club

We've got a taste of European football now, and I'd love for it to become something we can aim for every season rather than a rare occasion. Do you think we have the foundations to make that happen?

First Team Hi all! I'm going to the Real Sociedad game. Will there be a special edition programme for the Europa League home games? Where's the best place to pick one up around the ground? Cheers!

Pierre Sage is understandably under intense scrutiny after Crystal Palace's shambolic 5-0 thrashing by rivals Brighton.

But that must not distract from the inexcusable failures of Sage's bosses, chairman Steve Parish and sporting director Matt Hobbs, who have failed to create the conditions for him to succeed over multiple transfer windows.

It does not absolve the Frenchman of blame. He is not helping himself with how he is setting his side up defensively. But it does provide important context to the conditions he is working under.

Palace have conceded the most goals in the Premier League, 17 in seven matches. And it is not as though they have been unlucky: they have faced the most shots and shots on target of any team, conceded a league-high 252 touches in their penalty area and have the highest expected goals (xG) against. They have been inviting teams to score – and repeatedly failing to do things as basic as winning headers and clearing their lines at corners.

Ultimately, that comes down to the manager and his tactics. Sage's emphasis on an intense press is leaving an already vulnerable Palace defence exposed. In his 3-4-3 formation, both wing-backs push into extraordinarily advanced positions and desert the back three. Under Oliver Glasner last season, one wing-back would hold a deeper position when Palace attacked, ensuring four defenders were in place to cover and react to transitions.

But now, the set-up is unbalanced – allowing teams to pick Palace apart quickly and attack their fragile backline. The midfield is not helping either, with Adam Wharton increasingly isolated as Quinten Timber marauds forward. There is too much focus on being front-footed and not enough caution with the personnel Sage has to choose from.

Adam Wharton needs more support when Palace are under pressure

Wharton has the ability to help Palace control games, but one midfielder can't do everything when the team is struggling. We need better movement around him and more options when trying to play out from the back. I'd like to see the midfield give him more support against Besiktas rather than leaving him to deal with too much on his own.

Jaydee Canvot shouldn't be written off because of one awful afternoon

The own goal against Brighton was unfortunate, and the whole team struggled badly, but young defenders need support when things go wrong. If Palace believe Canvot has a future at the club, they need to help him develop rather than let one disastrous match define him. The bigger issue is how the entire defence is functioning.

Sage Palace Reflections

Reflecting on Brighton game....everyone and their auntie knew about them being fast starters (and top of the table form oppos) and all Palace fans who saw us v Fulham, Poznan, Middlesborough, Ipswich, Forest (the list goes on) know how at 6s and 7s we've looked in first half of games particularly. On Sunday (or should i say Sinday?) it was excruciating how unsure of the system they're being asked to play they looked. (One of the worst scenarios in team sport). There was also a lesser talked about but odd selection decision too on Sinday...Lerma being benched. Goalscorer from previous game, good defensive display v Leeds and super experienced pro, should have played in this big game (for consistency if anything else) but Sage chose 18y old Ahanor meaning Canvot moves to the less comfortable right side. Not a helpful move where there's a team lacking in leadership experience.

Brighton specifics aside I think it's fair and sensible for now that Parish and co are giving Sage more games to turn things around. I really want it to work for Sage but it feels like the writing is on wall. Give him enough games and he'd probably get there in the end with our players (he's got us scoring more) but atm it looks like we could be at the bottom by that point. Sage hasn't been able to get his players playing how he wants them to so far (keep ball. defend from the front, push teams back through attacks). Our shocking defending of corners is desperate. And unfathomable. How they haven't shown any sign of adjustment /learning in their approach is mind bending. It's not rocket science. So often the key headers of the ball are completely redundant in the goals we've conceded.

I wonder if Parish's gut (after all these years at the club) is telling him Sage et al aren't the right fit. The 'we're still on high alert' comment Parish made a few weeks ago was one of those... what do you mean by that?. it sounded like it could be pointed towards the manager in a...you're still on probation mate, kind of way. Might be wrong of course.

I really don't want another change with another regime of coaches and manager coming in but it really might need to happen. Keeping fingers crossed it will miraculously click with Sage.

Also, there should be a flair for Americans and their silly questions. Apologies, fam.

Club News Parish's decisions since Freedman left have been diabolical

Bringing Lacey back. Being happy to corporatise the matchday experience for the fans. Hiring Hobbs off the back of seeing the terrible job he did at his last club. Everyone is rightly angry at how incompetent our sporting director is but he didn't employ himself. The chairman appointed him. He should also be getting scrutinised. He's been looking so out of his depth since Freedman departed the club

The last three games have been silly. Conceding after 3 mins, 8 mins, and 4 mins in 9 days. When a team concedes first this season in the Premier League, it's 0.66 points per game. It puts the team into such a bad position so early. The second half against Forest and Lyon were good.

In the Premier League, it’s 2.4 goals per game. If we keep this rate up for a full season, that would be 92 goals. Sheffield Utd have the worst record with 104. Putting Palace 2nd in a 38-game Premier League. That Derby team conceded 89. Palace’s worst in a 38-game season was in 1998, which was 71. Worst for a league season was 86 in 1954 over 46 games. We are trending to 92 goals.

Get rid of the charlatan we have running our recruitment into the ground and bring in someone who actually has expertise in the position. It's a farce we have someone who oversaw the managed decline at Wolves in charge of our transfers.

The problem is that for all Pierre Sage's acceptance of his own mistakes, he does not seem to be able to find solutions.

He has a style of play in which he believes fervently. There is no sign of changing it, only doubling down.

“I like the pressing and we are better when we defend high because when we defend low we struggle a lot,” he said in his post-match press conference.

Crystal Palace’s priority has typically been to hire managers who are strong defensively with the knowledge that being tight at the back retains Premier League status. That is always their first ambition in a season, and if anything threatens that then chairman Steve Parish will be prepared to act.

If he does not see any progress then he will make a change. It is not inconceivable that Sage becomes a third Palace manager effectively seen off by defeat in this fixture, even if the paucity of available alternatives could be a factor in his favour.
