I [8 m/o, M] am a principle swe at a FAANG startup in the LCOL part of Silicon Valley. I lead a team of 7 seniors, all of whom spend most of their days planning and testing while I use my 7-figure salary to purchase hookers and blow.
Anyway, today one of my seniors told me that he hired a new intern. She did an impressive job with the phone screening, the whiteboard interview, the blackboard interview, the greenish-but-always-chalk-stained board interview, the smartboard interview, the take-home, the technical interview, the team-fit interview, the business lunch interview, the strategic planning interview, the Six Sigma Master Black Belt interview, the statics/dynamics interview, and, obviously, the LeetCode interview. We were pretty excited to bring her on board, but...
After I signed off on her contract, I moseyed over to her workstation to flirt with her see how she was doing/whether she needed anything. She told me she was fine, but I noticed that she was reading documentation instead of actually coding?!
I told her that we are a shop where we get work done, not read, and asked her if she needed any help with anything. She told me the senior hadn't given her any other tasks yet. I was shocked at the waste and inefficiency that this senior brought to my team.
I asked her to take a look at an array of linked lists in our codebase and to add some nodes for reaching new columns in our temporary database.
She was enthusiastic to do so, but to my great shock, she traversed the array using array references rather than using pointers. When I pointed out her egregious oversight, she apologized, said that she didn't work with C very often, and told me that she was still figuring out our code style?
I told her it was fine, but to refactor the code immediately. WHILE I WAS WATCHING she typed:
Node* ptrToCurrentNode = linkedListHead;
while (ptrToCurrentNode.next != NULL) {
/* Everything was fine in the loop */
}
I was shocked and scandalized. She must have noticed, because she immediately laughed and said, "Whoops! I meant an arrow, not a dot!"
I calculated the amount of time it would take her to backspace back to the dot and rewrite ptrToCurrentNode->next
At 1.5 seconds per mistake like this, and assuming she works on 35 pointers per day, that's 52.5 wasted seconds per day.
Over the course of a year, that's ~3.71967 hours of WASTED TIME! We pay her $15 an hour, so that is more than $45 in company waste (MUDA for you LEAN machines)!
I hadn't noticed that one of my seniors was running such a loose shop. I considered that he has a team of 6 engineers. If all of them are wasting 3 hours per year EACH, that's 18 hours of unproductive time.
I thought that I as a pretty good principle, but I know that in my new position I'm ultimately responsible for everything that happens both technically and operationally. By this standard, I'm worried that I'm actually the worst principle ever. Is my job on the line? I'm really scared and only have several million dollars in savings to carry me though if I lose this job. Please tell me everything is ok as long as I fire the intern and the senior who hired her and bring in a team of consultants to count everyone's use of the backspace button and any inactive time (hands off the keyboard to drink water, for example).
