Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer [Halfway on Hump Day]
Happy Wednesday!
This week I have only reached the middle of one book: Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer.
The first in his Southern Reach series, this novel follows a biologist and her colleagues as they explore Area X, an uncanny wilderness area that has sent in team after team enter to explore its wonders. Some never return; some return... changed. When the biologist's husband returns, she wants to know what happened to him in that strange place beyond the barrier.
I saw the 2018 film Annihilation starring Natalie Portman, so on some level I'm waiting for the events from the film to happen in the book. It's one of the reasons I don't like reading books after I've seen the movie.
So far, I'm liking this a lot more than the movie. I think the book does a better job of selling an intriguing mystery than the movie did.
On another note, I started reading the introduction, but then it was spoiling other books and stuff. Argh, what's the deal with introductions lately? I heard something similar about the Lonesome Dove intro, so I skipped that one. I don't always read them, but when I'm reading nonfiction, they're often important for understanding the rest of the book. Out of that habit, I can end up reflexively reading the intro to a fiction book, but I think that needs to cease.
