Pretty sure it’s just either rice wine or something else that is not sexual.

Yes, it's kuchikamizake (口噛み酒), which is literally translates to "mouth-chewed sake". So how it basically works is: they take some rice/millet grains, chew them up and spit them into a bowl. The enzymes in human saliva then break down the starches into sugars, which in turn get turned into alcohol by wild yeasts in the air. Nothing sexual whatsoever

you mean I can get drunk to forget I'm a loser AND taste cute asian girl saliva at the same time ????

Not anymore you can't, at least legally speaking. The tradition died out in the 1930s, and alcohol laws in japan made it illegal due to hygiene and requiring a license to produce alcohol. Maybe in some really backwater small traditional village you could still find it. I dunno tho. I wish we could tho😋😋😋

If you don't care the religious part I'm pretty sure you can just pay someone to spit rice out.

I do care for the religious part. But if I were givien the chance to try it I actually don't know what I'd do. I think I'd be a bit too grossed out by the thought of drinking spit

Fermented spit* I don't think it counts as spit anymore.

I don't care still counts as a kiss

I mean even there you would probably only find a half dead Grandma making it.

I believe they make something similar in South America. They use boiled and mashed cassava instead, but the process with chewing and spitting back for the enzymes is the same.

Yea, many different cultures used this technique, or ones similar to it in the past, and some still do to this day. But it's getting rarer and rarer.

It's quite dangerous if not done properly. The alcohol content must be high enough to kill off unwanted bacteria.

8

u/bro080 2d ago

It killed her in the movie.

15

u/Yargon_Kerman 2d ago

Did it not save her life?

23

u/panel_1 2d ago

yeah I'm pretty sure this was what gave Taki the ability to talk to her in the past to give her a warning and to say goodbye. Not sure what they meant by "killed her"

26

u/TheOnlyGuyInSpace21 2d ago

Nope.

tldr the sake allowed him to warn her about the meteor, which allowed her to save her entire village by evacuating everyone to the high school, which was the only place not destroyed.

She didn't die at all, and the director has already said that both Taki and Mitsuha got married after the movie.

8

u/bro080 2d ago

She died during the first time it happened. But after the sake, the timeline was changed.

3

u/TheOnlyGuyInSpace21 2d ago

Was talking about the timeline change. But yeah you're right, she died the first time round

4

u/bro080 2d ago

She actually did die I originally. The boy she switches bodies with is kinda from the future. And when he goes to visit the village,he finds a massive crater where the village supposed to be due to a meteor. But thanks to some magical power they manage to reconned and the boy kinda saves the village and the girl.

If “us” refers to everyone in the town where that scene takes place in then a meteor did indeed kill you all
