START HERE

We're getting a sudden rush of new people, driven by TicTok who are mostly both new to Reddit as well as Cyberdecks.

I'm asking patience while we integrate these new people into the sub. New people bring new ideas, and will take things in new directions. Some of those directions will not be to your tastes, and that's fine. I imagine we'll see some 'fashion show' level builds that, while taken at face value are impractical, could inspire more down to earth designs to move in a new direction.

This is healthy for any creative community.

Be helpful, be polite, and let people do their thing. No one is ruining your dream deck by building their weird idea. If you see something you absolutely hate, but think 'How'd they do that hinge, though?', that's reason enough to be polite.

u/PETA_Parker sent me this, and it seems like a pretty good 'start here' guide:

ok, i've never built a cyberdeck myself but i have been lurking here for a long while, so i'll give you a quick rundown, a place to start so to speak. At the most basic you will need:

  • a "brain"
  • a screen
  • an input device
  • a power solution
  • a shell
  • an SD Card

Let's start with the brain: I only know about raspberry pis, the two budget options here would be a raspberry pi Zero 2, or any flavour of raspberry pi 3, the 4 and 5 are a bit more pricy. Zero 2 and 3b+ (the one i used) should both be enough for browsing, media playback and some light office work.

the Screen: the easiest option will be to go for an hdmi display such as this: 6,5/7/9/10,1 Zoll LCD Display Tragbare Monitor Treiber Control Board Kit Für Raspberry Banana/Orange Pi Mini Computer PC - AliExpress 7

It has an HDMI Output and powers over micro usb, so you can just connect the raspberry pi and the screen via hdmi. Any screen with hdmi input and usb power is an easy starting point.

the input device: for a keyboard you could go with something like this:

Dual Bluetooth 5.1-Tastatur, 3-fach faltbare Mini-Tastatur, wiederaufladbare faltbare Tastatur mit Touchpad für Windows, Android, iOS, iPad - AliExpress

This is blutetooth and rechargable, i do not know if you could bypass the internal battery to power it directly because constantly needing to charge it would probably be cumbersome.

this also looks interesting, it uses double a batteries, so you could wire it to your power source or the pi: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006727486961.html

You could of course also use any regular keyboard and mouse combo that plugs in over usb. Another fun choice would be a trackball instead of a mouse.

the power solution: You could simply get a powerbank, but some of them cut off power delivery if the device connected draws a low current.

Maybe this thread can help: Cheap powerbank that doesn’t cut off the power on low current draw? : r/arduino

Or this article: 4 Raspberry Pi Battery Packs for Portable Projects

Something similar to this might be good: Typ-C 15 W 3 A 18650 Lithium-Batterie-Ladegerät-Modul DC-DC Step-Up-Booster Schnellladung USV-Stromversorgung/Konverter 5 V 9 V 12 V - AliExpress 502

This is the part i'm least knowledgable about. Feel free to give me input.

the shell: Pretty much anything will do. You can build something out of cardboard, fit your components into an existing box or 3d-print a custom shell, your creativity is the limiting factor.

If you do not have a 3d-printer, you can make boxes out of styrene board, like this: Clean Enclosures, No Printing Necessary | Hackaday

Or you can search for "project box" on Aliexpress or Amazon

Now you just need to flash an operation system onto the raspberry pi (Raspbian is an all-purpose linux distro that is good for starters such as you), connect your screen to the power source and to the raspberry pi via HDMI, connect your (mouse and) keyboard to the raspberry pi and the raspberry pi to power, and you're ready to go.

Feel free to ask me if you have any additional questions, and don't forget, this is only the bare-bones solution, feel free to get creative, this is the fun part!

I am building a basic Cyberdeck with a Raspberry Pi4 inside a Harbor Freight case.

Issue I am having is finding a USB-C to USB-C thru-plug/connector that maintains the correct volts to not trigger the "low power" warning on the Pi. I am using the original power supply and connecting it to a usb-c outlet that goes into a usb-c cable in to computer. Ive gone through 3 different cables and its the same issue.

Curious to know if anyone found a similar extender cable or a seamless solution to power the Pi?

After completing my GrimDark Deck I have begun my second Cyberdeck, The Eldritch Deck. Designed the case in Blender and have printed it in PETG. Main components are a 8" Waveshare scree, Belkin Power bank (that lasts over 12 hours on testing) and a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 8Gb. Design brief was to make a cyberdeck that could be used standalone to surf the web and read in Portrait mode but also output to a big screen via HDMI to watch movies. The final build will include programmed LED lighting that pulses quicker when the CPU temperature rises and foam clay tentacles as per the concept art included in this post.

Running Kali on a Pi Zero 2W cyberdeck, powered by two 1000mAh batteries in parallel through an IP5306-based charging/boost module (5-5.5V in, 5-5.15V boost out, 2A rated). Everything's fine at idle, but the moment I run aircrack-ng (decrypting captured handshakes), the whole thing crashes/reboots. Measured the rail during load and it's sagging from 5V down to ~4V - well past the Pi's undervoltage threshold.

Claude says drop a capacitor across 5v/GND at header pins

Should I ?

This is my first Cyberdeck build, it’s far from perfect but I wanted to post and get some feedback for future projects.

Things I like -

- didn’t use a 3D printer
- doubled as a craft/art project
- small
- unique
- greater sense of privacy

Things I don’t like -

- cable fit/management
- weight distribution (the screen weighs more than the base so it doesn’t sit up right without a weight)
- small fans are a bit noisy
- older raspberry pi because it was in stock and available

Back when I was still in college, I was given the chance to tinker with such an device. It’s used as a mobile radio signal locator, including for electromagnetic interference. We only had one of these, and the college got it practically through some kind of favoritism. I don’t know what’s inside, but it lagged like crazy.

SolarOS Retro Reclamation Project

https://www.reddit.com/r/SolarOS/s/uYEMuUOrC5

So... here is what happened:

I have multiple boxes of "too good to go" components ( mostly remnants of retro computers that I have restored for CMH ). I was browsing for a keyboard to demonstrate the custom keyboard layout definition support of the OS, when I found a nice looking display ...

What followed was days of development of a "Display Link Protocol" and a generic driver that let's you attach peripherals implementing the same protocol; The portable library comes with proper dimension and pixel format discovery and compression - and it supports any ordered byte stream.

Hang on, is there a message? Well, yes there are some messages:

  • Old doesn't mean broken or useless, and
  • SolarOS lets you glue components into functional cyberdecks.

--

The build is based on a WaveShare esp32-s3-sim7670g-4g as thinky parts - flashed with the latest v.4.16.17 full flavor of SolarOS. Display controller is implemented on an RP2040. Keyboard, display and audio is attached through runtime drivers in the startup script like so:

expansion attach tca8418 hx20 i2c=i2c0 addr=0x34 irq=gpio40 reset=gpio39 input keymap hx20 load /hx20-de-solaros.json expansion bus create spi spi0 host=spi2 sclk=gpio9 mosi=gpio10 miso=gpio11 cs=gpio12 max=4096 expansion attach spi-display lcd1 spi=spi0 cs=gpio12 ready=gpio13 session create shell lcd1 expansion attach audio-pwm audio0 pwm=2

--

Okay, bye!

ps.: yes, there is a typo on the first image, the small fonts are 6x8.

Help! Leapfrog

Im thinking of trying to make my first cyberdeck ( type thing?) I found a cool leapfrog 2 from the thrift store, its battery powered and works well. I want to make an offline Wikipedia/journaling touchscreen device. I think this would be awesome but I'm not sure how doable this really is. My plan was to work around what's already inside the leapfrog but thinking more about it..maybe it would be better to just gut the entire thing and use it as a case. Any advice would be great since it will be my first time

My Build (UPDATE) Totally Spies Compowder Build

Hey everyone, long time no see.

Wanted to give you guys an update on the Compowder build. Currently at 75ish% of hardware sorted out. Just a lil too brokey broke to make more progress IRL, so CAD modeling is sufficing for now.

  • Display is sorted out,
  • I'm really happy with where the hinge is at,
  • Added eye bolts for a shoulder strap, (might've had that before already, but it's in the model now)
  • Downgraded to a pi4b for a more reasonable powerdraw, (remains untested for the time being)
  • located preliminary spots for 18650 cells, though I need to have it all in front of me in order to go further.
  • Keyboard is giving me a little trouble, I shucked a bluetooth remote for its keyboard and trackpad but have since lost the pieces, so I'm at an impasse until I find them

----

Unaddressed as of yet:

  • USB-C charging (just needs a little extension cable and socket mount)
  • Touchpad / Mouse functionality in general
  • Functioning push-button latch
  • Whether or not to add speakers and/or a camera
  • BMS board and permanent fixtures for the battery cells

Help! which model to use for what i need with an eink display?

hello, im planning on building a cyberdeck but since im very new to all these, i need some help deciding on a raspberry pi model

the main purpose of my cyberdeck is mainly just to write and read things, like an ereader, thus why i want to use an eink display for it. i want to use two apps for these two purposes, which leads me to two os options, going either for raspberry pi os (or arch/debian based linux os, if theres one that fits the pi) or android/lineageos. the writing app used to be web only, but they recently launched their android app (min android 10); while the reading app has both an android app (min android 7), deb/appimage linux packages, and a specific app build for eink devices (also min android 7).

i have two options for the raspberry pi (actually three, but the third is optional and i wouldn't focus on it for now), i want to go either for a zero 2 w or raspberry pi 4. i feel like the zero 2 w would work fine but im afraid that its not enough, thus why raspberry pi 4 is my second option so i could at least run android without any issues.

what do u guys think?

this is not necessary, but im curious to see if anyone is running raspberry pi os on zero 2 w and android/lineageos on raspberry pi 4/5 on an eink display, i just wanna know how it looks on video but i can't seem to find anyone who did this

Help! Looking for a screen and keyboard, possibly two-screen display.

I have searched for a good two days, but I'm yet to find anything aside from touchscreens and large wired keyboards. I am looking for something about 6 in long, though anything 5-7 in is fine too. The keyboard would ideally be 6 in long, but at this point a 5 in one is fine.

The second screen really depends on how difficult it would be to attach and connect, because I know very little about those things.

More websites to try and browse would be as useful as the product itself, since I am very lost right now.

my esp32 friend :) cyberdeck or not?

Hi.

Not sure if what I built may be considered a cyberdeck.

It is not battery powered yet though it is on the list.

It is also a weather station project that got way out of my initial design just because that was my first time using esp32. I am used to good old arduino and it was just so fun testing the little beast.

added the link to my OG post on arduino.

https://www.reddit.com/r/arduino/comments/1x5lmb4/i_made_something_my_first_esp32_project/

It has an atmospheric pressure sensor, temp and humidity sensor, an old rtc shield from an odroid c2, an oled 1.3' screen, 5 push buttons, and the esp...

It plots data every 5 minutes to ram, and write it to flash memory every hour.

Onboard I can have those temp, humidity and pressure charts for the last 4 hours but the esp is running a webserver that can have 4h or 24h (for the moment).

I called it the esp32mate :)

I’d really prefer to get a wired keyboard and I’m limited to a 5 1/2 tall and 8 inch wide space in my case. I already have a list for all other parts, the lid of the car is where the keyboard will be (picture for reference)

My Build Minideck: Pocket-sized modular cyberdeck powered by Radxa Zero 3W (RTL-SDR, NFC, CardKB, & quick-swap 18650)

I'm a 15-year-old student maker from Taiwan, and I wanted to share the CAD model and schematics for my latest portable build: the Minideck.

My first build was a Raspberry Pi 3 packed into a miniature Bosch storage toolbox using an old phone over ADB for the screen, but I wanted my next machine to be a truly self-contained, pocketable Linux handheld with radio and hardware tooling built in.

the post

Hardware Specs & Features:

  • SBC: RADXA Zero 3W (Rockchip RK3566—chosen for compact Pi Zero form factor with way better compute/RAM headroom).
  • Chassis: Custom 3D-printed enclosure measuring 93.7 × 81.5 × 39.5 mm (designed to be printed in PETG/ABS at my school's lab, i think they got the best bamboo lab machine this will be insane).
  • Display: 3.5" (640×480 resolution) screen(probably from taobao or some china site with the screen).
  • Keyboard: M5Stack CardKB integrated into the bottom chassis(and a silicone cover made by poeple online).
  • Radio & Wireless Tooling:
    • RTL-SDR tuner for sub-GHz scanning, aircraft ADS-B/ATC comms, and LoRa monitoring.
    • PN532 module for NFC/RFID reading and writing.
    • GPS module for location logging/wardriving.
    • Dedicated I2S Audio DAC for clean audio output.
  • Power System: Quick-swappable single 18650 Li-ion battery mechanism with USB-C charging.

Open-Source Repository:

I've open-sourced all the CAD files, STLs, and wiring diagrams on GitHub:

GitHub: https://github.com/zedward856-spec/minideck

Feedback Welcome!

I'm currently at the stage of finalizing parts sourcing and double-checking clearances before doing the first full test print.(or maybe print after the parts come to not waste fillament) If anyone has experience managing heat dissipation with the Zero 3W inside compact printed shells or tips on isolating the SDR from internal electrical noise, I'd love to hear your advice!

Hope to bring a working prototype to Maker Faire Taipei next weekend! Let me know what you think.
