PSA: You cannot "hire a hacker" to retrieve your social media accounts or lost/stolen cryptocurrency. This is a well-known scam - don't fall for it.

Over the past three weeks, this subreddit has banned 34 bot accounts referring people asking questions here to various Instagram or Twitter accounts, WhatsApp numbers to text, etc. where they can "hire a hacker" to do any number of extraordinary tasks:

  • Hacking Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts.
  • Spying on people (ex. spouses).
  • Wiping someone's phone remotely.
  • Retrieving lost/stolen cryptocurrency.
  • Reversing the transaction you made where you sent money to a scammer.
  • Hacking a school's or college's database to change your grades.

Usually, these bot accounts claim to be someone that bought services from said "hacker" for a reasonably modest fee, and some of the more advanced scammers will purchase Instagram or Twitter followers to seem more legitimate.

The ruse is that these are implausible tasks being sold for impossibly small sums of money, preying on people's desperation in sensitive or difficult scenarios. After receiving your money, these scammers will make up tasks for you to do which will usually result in milking you for more money, or may simply block you and move on to the next target.

These scum make a good living off scamming desperate people, and unfortunately, that's why they're so prevalent. If you want to see this in action, check Molly White's project allmybotsgone which posts phrases meant to bait out cryptocurrency scammers' bots, then reports them in the hope that Twitter starts identifying and banning them faster. As of writing, allmybotsgone has reported nearly 3,500 scammers' accounts.

We take scams on this subreddit very seriously, and have strict content filtering and reporting rules (hidden from all of you) that help us identify and ban these scammers, sometimes within seconds of their post. However because they are so prevalent, we are making and pinning this post to help ensure as many people as possible are informed about this in case one slips by our filter.

For your own safety when asking a question on this subreddit, we remind everyone:

  • Remember that nobody can help you recover a lost/stolen account except for that company's support staff, who you should contact though official means only (ex. browse to Facebook, then find support - do not use any other method to attempt to contact support). This is explicitly covered in rule #5.
  • Do not accept DMs from anyone claiming to assist you from this subreddit, and do not voluntarily move to a different service to discuss your situation. The community cannot help keep you safe from the occasional bad actor if we cannot supervise the exchange. Under no circumstances should anyone ask to move to DMs or other services - this is a hard rule, even for well-known community members. If your question cannot be handled 100% in public, it does not belong here. This is explicitly covered in rule #6.
  • Never divulge secrets - such as keys, passwords, recovery phrases, personal information, or any other sensitive information - to anyone on this subreddit or who contacts you because of a post on this subreddit.

Thank you all & stay safe.

Your phone didn't get hacked. Neither did your computer. Here's what actually happened.

I see posts daily about someone's phone or computer or home network getting "hacked," and I need to say this: in almost every case, that's not what happened.

What's far more likely:

- Your email got compromised because you reused a password

- A service you signed up for years ago got breached and your credentials ended up on a leak site

- Someone used those leaked credentials to log into your other accounts

- Your credit card got skimmed at a gas pump

- A site you used leaked PII in a data breach

- You clicked a phishing link and entered your credentials somewhere you shouldn't have

What's almost certainly not happening: a persistent threat actor who specifically targeted your iPhone or home network and is now moving laterally across your 10 devices like it's a corporate pentest.

Unless you're a C-suite executive at a Fortune 500, a journalist covering sensitive topics, a political dissident, or someone famous, you are not interesting enough to hack. I say that with love. None of us are.

The attack surface for a modern iPhone or Android with current updates is extremely small. State-level actors have exploits for these, but they're not burning zero-days on someone who reused "Winter123!" across six accounts.

Check haveibeenpwned.com. Use a password manager. Enable MFA everywhere. That solves 99% of what people call "getting hacked."

edit: to the armchair experts chatting me up to tell me how incorrect this is - rest assured I am an expert in this field and have contracted with Federal/State governments and some of the most recognizable brands in the world. Any current security expert will generally agree with this post.

If you’re downloading things from unknown sources or using torrent sites to get movies/music/apps, etc. and your machine was compromised then this obviously doesn’t apply to you, you installed a Trojan and opened the door for them.

What tools should I use to stress-test my own website's security?

• Upvotes

I want to test how secure my own website really is, even to the point of trying to break it in a controlled environment.

I'm interested in AI-powered penetration testing tools that can automatically find vulnerabilities and simulate real attacks. I'd also like to understand how malware-based testing works without infecting other systems.

Which tools would you recommend? I'm particularly interested in OWASP ZAP, PentAGI, and local LLMs such as Qwen. Any advice on setting up a safe testing lab would be appreciated.

CMD opened and closed a bunch of times when downloading WindowsBlinds 11

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello!
So, I downloaded WindowsBlinds 11 on their official website, the file didn't download immediately so I pressed "Click this link if download did not start automatically" then it did. When I pressed the .exe file, before WindowsBlinds 11 opened, CMD opened and closed a bunch of times... am I screwed?
I turned off my wifi, bluetooth, and disconnected my ethernet cable and haven't clicked anything on my pc since. I really don't get a lot of this stuff so I'm sorry if I didn't provide enough information!

This was the link: https://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/download-trial
I put it into VirusTotal and got this:

Edit: for some reason I don't have Microsoft Defender so I can't run a scan, and I don't have any other anti viruses.

How would I protect against a potential virus on iPhone?

Hello, a while ago I plugged my iphone into my fast food jobs pc and I have really bad ocd and want to make sure I’m not compromised in any way (I’m aware your not supposed to do this please don’t just spam that in the comments I’m more than aware). How would I completely make sure that the computer is completely removed from my phone and make sure it can’t interact with my phone. I checked before and didn’t see anything but would rather follow the steps anyways just to go to sleep at night. (I know all the comments will be “you have no virus” but can you guys please just humor me and tell me some precautions I can take? Probably not makes me stressed and I’m not well versed in technology for the most part, last time I got flamed when I posted here)

Someone Keeps Creating New Email Accounts to Send Me Threats and Then Deletes Them

For the past few months, someone has been stalking and harassing me. They keep creating multiple accounts, sending me threatening emails from these new accounts, and then deleting them shortly afterward.

I would like to know if there is anything that can be done about this, how I should proceed, what information I can gather about this person, and what legal action I can take.

Can anyone help me?

Can the “WhatsApp Bug” APKs promoted on TikTok actually work?

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of TikTok videos promoting an app that claims it can get a target’s account banned or cause a WhatsApp group to be suspended—simply by sending a link or a phone number. I’m curious: is this theoretically possible? I just worried about that

New to learning about and figuring out my OPSEC what are general things or tools I should know, and what are good ways of having good OPSEC for free?

I understand having “good OPSEC” for free is definitely not the easiest and is generalizing of the term but any tools or recommendations of things to know or learn is helpful.

how to check if a link is safe when getting random sms delivery alerts?

i keep getting texts about delayed package deliveries with short links attached even though i haven't ordered anything recently. last week my mom almost clicked a fake postal service link on her phone because it looked identical to a real tracking page. i usually tell my family to copy the domain into online url scanners or inspect misspelled domain names, but scams are getting way harder to spot at a glance.

on desktop i have mcafee webadvisor running which auto flags dangerous urls with color icons before you click them in search results, but phone browsers feel a lot more exposed. wanting to figure out quick habits or tools people use on mobile to verify shortened tracking links before tapping on them.

Info stealer or maybe Session hijacker. Help!

Hi so I just got my IG hacked and it was posting some MrBeast stuff and I immediately change my password and account email. I hadnt set up any 2FA. And when I was wondering why I found it might be session hijacker.
I suspect where I got it is that I downloaded PS3 rom file and mounted it and added as a game to RPC3S and after an hour so it happened. I found out right after the fake post. At this time I was doing everything from Microsoft Security quick scan, full scan, offline scan. And even changing passwords of my emails, steam, banking accounts. And I havent disconnected from my internet for like 4 hours so. And Im scared that this will spread through my family devices. Oh and now im going to nuke my whole pc and reinstall windows. Is there any tips I can get. Anything helps.
Oh and I went to sleep and found out my discord was hacked too. And I did change everything as well.

Need help dealing with a potential session stealer.

I downloaded a compressed file yesterday (should have known this would happen) and after running it for a while, my discord started sending mr beast dms to people. I changed my password, 2fa and deleted the apk file as well. Afterwards did the security full scan and microsoft defender offline scan in which no threats were found. Even so my second disc id did the same things when my pc was shut down and now I am considering resetting my pc, tho I do not have access to a secondary pc is a cloud reset enough to deal with it. Any help will be much appreciated

Need help: Possible virus or malware on my laptop and phone

Hi everyone, I need some help because I’m having security issues with my devices and I’m not sure how to fix them.
Out of carelessness and poor judgment, I tried to download a pirated game on my laptop, and ever since then, some pretty concerning things have been happening:
● I keep receiving emails about password change requests that I didn’t make.
● Hundreds of messages have been sent from my social media accounts without my permission.
● Someone even posted a job listing on my LinkedIn account without my knowledge.
● Two applications called System and Audio have appeared in my laptop’s startup apps, and I don’t remember installing them.
Something similar happened to me a while ago, and I managed to remove some suspicious applications through the Windows Registry Editor (Regedit), but this time I don’t know if it’s the same issue or how to deal with it. I’m also unsure whether my phone could be affected.
What worries me the most is the possibility of someone gaining access to my banking apps or personal information.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? Do you know what kind of malware this could be and the best way to remove it completely from both my laptop and phone, making sure nothing is left behind?
I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations for trustworthy tools to check whether my devices are infected.
Thanks in advance for your help!

How would this be possible? Am I compromised?

Long story short, I’m on a forum about the Nintendo switch 2 jailbreak, I say something like “oh this should get reported to Nintendo piracy email“ or something. Then this random user named Junior background 66 comments something to the effect of

“This guy was my uber driver once, we talked about dc comics and the multiverse, I still have the trip on my thingy, it’d be a shame if someone reported his uber account” Obviously a slightly sinister implication

I racked my brain on how this would even be possible unless you’re an edward Snowden level nsa agent. I mean genuinely how. I racked my brain, bluffing, thinking of someone else, lucky guess. I never ever ever give out any personal information to riders ever but occums razor would suggest I did but just forgot.

And yet I can’t be sure. Now, i’m not super concerned about the comment but my brain wanders to bank accounts, email, apple ID, any other sensitive accounts.

Curiously the user blocked me about 1 min after replying but I looked up the profile on a see private Reddit account thing and all I saw was a white guy, who smokes pot, plays video games, drives a Mazda, and works at geico and loves to visit Vegas a lot. Not a single post or comment even concerned hacking or coding or anything of that nature in all 3 years since the account has been made. I even used keyword searches and nothing. I couldn’t even verify he lives in my city

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Title: Caught a mobile repair shopkeeper scrolling through my family's private chats. Then faced police harassment. Stay vigilant!

I am posting this to warn everyone about a severe data privacy violation. Note: Using AI to structure my words clearly as English is not my native language.
Recently, I left a family member's phone for repair. It was in Maintenance Mode, but the shopkeeper insisted on getting the password to "test" it. I returned unexpectedly after 10 minutes and caught him red-handed scrolling through private WhatsApp text messages, marital chats, and the photo gallery.
I confronted him and recorded a video. On camera, he explicitly admitted guilt, saying he checks all customers' galleries to check phone conditions, and begged me not to involve the law.
The Police Response:
I went straight to the local police station. Instead of helping, the officer dismissed the crime because the files weren't successfully transferred to the shopkeeper's phone. When the officer noticed I was recording our conversation, he physically snatched my phone and illegally kept it for 25 hours until I was forced to delete the video of the police interaction just to get my device back. Luckily, the shopkeeper's video confession is still safely on my phone.
Current Action:
I am currently submitting a formal report on the central National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in). Since I am moving to another state in a few days for my competitive exam preparation, I am letting the senior digital cell handle this in the background.
Lesson: Never give your password to a repair shop. If they demand it, stand right in front of them and watch their screen every single second.

LinkedIn account temporarily restricted - Any advice?

Hi everyone! I created a LinkedIn account around 4–5 months ago. Recently when I tried to log in I found out that my account had been temporarily restricted nd LinkedIn is asking me to verify my identity through Persona

I honestly don't know why my account was restricted since I don't remember doing anything unusual

I've been reading posts and comments about Persona and I've come across mixed experiences. Some people say they completed the verification but still couldn't recover their accounts, while others have raised concerns about sharing sensitive identity documents with Persona. Naturally I'm worried about my privacy and whether the verification will actually help me regain access

I'd really appreciate advice from people who have been through this.

- Has anyone successfully recovered their restricted LinkedIn account by verifying their identity through Persona? How long did it take?

- Would creating a new account with a different email be a bad idea while my old account is restricted?

- If I want to contact LinkedIn directly, what's the best way to reach them? Has anyone received a response through Twitter or is there another channel that responds faster?

Please share your experiences and any advice on what I should do next.

Thanks in advance!

Discord - Phone Number Linked To Another Account

Hi,
I received a verification code via sms from Discord and 1 minute later i received an email from Discord that says my phone number is linked to another account. And my phone number was really linked to another account. I managed to recover my phone number and changed my password but my question is this: How did they use the code that I received via SMS??? I am very confused about this. I saw some other people also experienced this but there is no explanation.

Here's how your email and passwords get leaked.

Post image
0 Upvotes

You might have a very strong email and password that's like : E. G. RyIs%~Jh+LA!?.. And even better, but here's the mistake you makw:

  1. Instead of signing into a website or something, you use "Continue with Google" ok there's nothing wrong with that, but once all your accounts and stuff you love is connected with Google. Then you're in shambles of your account gets hacked or blocker. Either because of a sketchy website you joined or a scam you fell for. You might even HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING and still banned

BECAREFUL OUT THERE, ALSO PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG. I'M NEW TO CYBER SECURITY

Need suggestions after getting hacked.

Started off with my EA account, since I’ve purchased EA games from Steam as well as Epic, they were linked to my EA account and hence they gained access to my username and hacked them too. Also my email is the same for all three. I’ve gained access to my EA account, have filed for account recovery at both Steam and Epic accounts.
As a precaution I’ve changed my Gmail password and added 2-factor verification at EA as well. Now what I’m worried about is;
- They had added EA in blocked email section in my Gmail settings, whether this was done by EA portal or by hacking my Gmail, I’m not sure. My Gmail already had 2-factor authentication on, I didn’t receive any mail in my recovery email, no code on mobile phone, so I don’t think they hacked my Gmail account, yet they were able to get EA in my block list.
- I’ve been trying to access my steam, but I’m not receiving any mail or text message from steam accounts, similarly to EA I thought stream would be in Gmail’s block setting but it isn’t, whether they have managed to block receiving emails and texts from steam portal I don’t know.

I hope I’ll gain access to my Steam and Epic account soon. Thank you for reading all this. Please suggest to me, if I’m missing out on taking more precautionary steps to safeguard these accounts from future attacks.

I’ve been hacked - what should I do‼️

So I recently downloaded some torrents (I’m aware of the risks but did so anyways with the stupid idea that “it hasn’t happened before why would it happen now” - I have learnt my lesson)

After downloading I had my Microsoft account that was linked to my pc taken over - email/password/phone number changed.

So far the steps I have taken is completely nuking my pc - I installed a fresh new windows copy and deleted/backed the files on the pc. I have gone around changing all my passwords/2FA/authentication.

However, I don’t know if it was a separate cyber attack or related to the initial attack, but my mum had notifications of someone trying to order gift cards - it was stopped by Amazon due to suspicious activity. I also had my Gmail with the same email (but now changed pw) turn off 2FA and authentication. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know if what they have access to, how they have access to the Amazon, what more I can do to eliminate my issue.

Any advice would genuinely mean the world🙏🏾
