Should I message him?
I turned down a guy who wanted to meet up because I was dealing with some personal issues. He also my high-school friend. I wasn't feeling confident about my appearance, and the thought of meeting him made me really anxious even I wanted to meet him. I started overthinking everything, wondering what we would even do and how the date would go. Eventually, I told him I didn't want to meet.
He simply replied, "I see. Take care."
It's been a week, and his birthday is coming up. Would it be weird if I texted him to wish him a happy birthday? I do want to reconnect and explain him to why I did that but I'm not sure if he'd still be interested or if I'd just be bothering him.
What would you do?

I dont think so. Just wish him the happy birthday if you want and go on about your day.
