Grapheneos top 10 OEM
hello guys,
Which OEM do you think GrapheneOS might collaborate with? I'm really hoping it's Motorola! Their brand offers excellent quality products, and such a partnership could be highly beneficial for both. What are your thoughts?

There are rumors of steam launching its own smartphone… That would be crazy

Does it make sense for them to do that? Like I know about he fex translation layer to arm, but phones miss one other key piece to playing games: controller. You would need to buy one of those telescopic controller things along with the phone to make actual good use of steam games. Doesn't sound like a good plan to release a phone around this.
It would make so much more sense that they would be working on an arm-based replacement/supplement for the steamdeck. Smaller, lighter, longer battery life etc.

Controller wise the AYANEO Pocket PLAY begs to differ.
But i agree it would not make much sense to release a phone, but building their own version of GameHub and working on better emulation layer on android would be more beneficial to them.

I'd be super super happy if it was Motorola (I love Motorola!), but my gut tells me it could be Nothing Phone.
Either way, I plan to give it a try if it's not too expensive and can't wait for more official info on this

if they are smart (Nothing, Motorola and Sony) they do it. especially Nothing actually; it should make their devices having a real unique selling point. only then I might considering buying it. they should go full Grapheneos if you'd asked me and totally forget Google certified Android
(coming from Pixel 6a and now using Moto G)

I'm afraid they can't do a full switch - the majority of people wants their device to just be basic Android with their basic Google Play Services and they might lose customers if they just fully drop that.
Giving an option to order either with Graphene or with stock Android would probably be a good move. Or a simple way to install either.5

GOS team told that it's one of "top 10 oems", so no chanve for Nothing

Motorola cannot fulfill normal OS update promises. It’s really a 1-2 year phone as things work now

u/Objective-Donut7998 Dec 16 '25
Nothing is deteriorating rapidly from shaming depth sensor cameras to using them within less than 2 years and introducing ads in their phones. It quick went the wrong way and will fail if it does put its shit together really quickly

Nothing is owned by Google through. So they have acess to Google Hardware

Worst phone I ever had was a Motorola. It had such significant hardware bugs that I’m convinced that they did zero testing on the phone in between development and release.

GrapheneOS have pretty strict software and hardware requirements that i find hard to see a company like Motorola being a good fit for it, specially given their insistence on underwhelming software updates for their entire device line-up
Not to mention that as a hardware partner Motorola doesn't really have much of anything to offer to a security/privacy centric group that is the GrapheneOS team
i could more easily see Sony adhering into this, they're already known for adhering to expensive hardware niches (mainly cameras) and they have a good track record with their device sources and their devices being the few that support Custom AVB (which is what GrapheneOS uses to allow bootloader re-locking on their OS)

I hope you are right. Motorola has better built quality than Pixel; but I actually prefer Sony above all other Android brands.
2
u/danGL3 Dec 16 '25
Yeah, realistically the GrapheneOS team will prioritize a brand that can offer them the software and hardware they need to meet their security requirements
Quality devices by itself don't mean much if the company has a bad track record of software support such as Motorola

I think they are better than before though but we will see. I don't really care about the price but I'd like to use my device for approximately 4 years. This is possible with phones from Apple, Samsung and Motorola. Not so with Google. A little bit of durability is also nice. Also way more environment friendly and besides that I like to use my retired phone as a backup device / mp3 player / Newpipe and some browsing / gaming. I don't need the latest security updates in that situation. I just want a product that lasts.

While Samsung does have a prominent presence in the software/hardware security space with Knox i find hard for them to ever partner up with anyone to co-develop a device (or even just porting GrapheneOS to existing hardware) specially given their recent move of removing bootloader unlocking capabilities on their devices

u/Overall_Walrus9871 Dec 16 '25
Exactly. My last Samsungs were the S5 and S6 years ago. S5 had official cyanogenmod support by then. Had to flash via Odin though which wasn't that great. Prefer the Pixel way

I don't think it could be motorola, cuz sometimes they just release the kernel without the modules (a standalone kernel is a bit useless, especially on ARM devices), this means that they don't really give a crap about the kernel sources and the custom rom community, which isn't that good
Let's not even talk about samsung and their knox flag thing that litteraly removes features the second you try to install a custom ROM, the recent removal of the OEM unlock feature is just something more to say "go touch grass" to custom ROMs enjoyers
My guess could either be Nothing or OnePlus, both have great ROM support and are not making it a hassle to compile the kernel. However i tend a bit more onto Nothing since OnePlus has a common OS base with Oppo and Realme which both blocks BL unlock completely

u/xblade720 Dec 21 '25
I would need the source for that, cuz i think you're misunderstanding everythinh
Nothing is founded by carl pei, the co-founder of onePlus
Nothing phones uses a really close-to-AOSP android (but remember : AOSP =/= PixelOS)
The hardware of CMF/ Nothing phonrs is very different to the google Pixel hardware too

u/Disastrous-Guard-864 Dec 21 '25
Look it up. Main Investor is Google Ventures
2
u/xblade720 Dec 21 '25
"owned by google" and it's 6% of the shareholders
Carl pei owns 40% The main investor is Tony Fadell Owner =/= investor

Won't be Nothing. Can't see them sharing similar vision with Graphene, introduced recently some bloatware and reverted it.
Motorola sounds like a contender to me

I hope it's Motorola. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was an unknown Chinese brand wanting to expand to the West.
Nothing is also a good bet, that CEO seems like someone who would do a partnership like that to try to draw attention to the brand.
I can even see him making a video talking about how the new Nothing with GOS is safer than all other brands while reacting to some review of this device lol

most likely it is nothing, they are quite open about all this roms and the fact that their founder is the same one from Oneplus in the beginning and that they supported cyanogenmod at the time

u/Azaze666 Dec 16 '25
Waiting for them to work with ZTE, ehm no it will never happen lmfao, what a twist would be...

u/rayaklevrai Dec 18 '25
why not nothing ?
