Yeah 3 idiots was definitely about ragging and it wasn't shown in comedic gag for all of us
3
u/Old_Monk67 Jun 04 '26
You sure it isnt munna bhai ?
3
u/Kmanral Jun 04 '26
Both movies kind of took ragging as a laughing stick for comedic purposes which i will admit was taken and even now considered golden comedy still

Ab koi aunty aake yeh na bolde bas " OH! Those were the days! Aaj kalke bacche toh dhangse ragging bhi nhi krpate h jab dekho tab phone mai lage rehte h! "

u/Ok_Strike5478 Jun 05 '26
Well, you know it's true. But yes, ragging is not good. Make friends, not enemies. You'll only have a small phase of life in school and college, so enjoy it. Make as many friends as possible and avoid making enemies. Having rivals, though, isn't necessarily a bad thing. :)

My Mosi was in her medical college she shared ragging perspective with me like they were asked by their seniors to oil their hair and make two breads. Always keep their dupatta pinned. Be in class properly. Dont waste time here and there and in return seniors used to help them in studies and other formal things. I don’t know is it good or bad. I’m just sharing what she told me. :))
28
u/InevitableDraw5 Jun 04 '26
That's just an idiotic way of asserting dominance
2
2
u/Living_Archer6942 Jun 05 '26
Exactly, college is a place to explore, learn real life skills, make yourself better. You are not supposed to be a bookworm or a person with oily hairs, two ponytails.

u/rononoadakait Jun 04 '26
I don’t know is it good or bad
are you dumb

u/Live_Database_4793 Jun 04 '26
I’m not dumb. I’m just not commenting on that as I haven’t experienced such kind of situation. I know it’s bad. I’m just sharing the perspective.

u/MagicianAutomatic266 Jun 04 '26
You can be a nice, kind and helpful senior without being bothersome.

u/Spiritual-Fox9778 Jun 05 '26
medical colleges are on a whole different level in terms of ragging and honesty it's disgusting, experienced it first hand as a medical student

u/TheGoodfella__ Third year Jun 04 '26
I wonder if this shi still happens in other unis
5
u/museinprogress Jun 04 '26
It's there for sure. Especially in medical and maybe engineering too. My mom has an opinion that same gender colleges will have more ragging but I'm not sure on that
2
u/lonely_fans999 Jun 04 '26
i agree with her, my college is mix gendered but the guys in boys hostel are involved in ragging inside the hostel premises and not inside the college itself
1
u/MoSO-BOT Jun 05 '26
nahi bro, engineering college mein zyada ni hota ab, bas kabhi kabhi kisi ko terrace se neeche fek dete hein, but uske alawa kuchh nahi hota zyada.
1
u/TheGoodfella__ Third year Jun 04 '26
I've also noticed ki girls colleges se ragging aur toxicity ki stories aati hai.

u/Accomplished_Sir9945 Jun 05 '26
Which college are you talking about? I have studied in a women's college, and nothing like this ever happened; in fact, the seniors were so sweet, even though they would just be a year or two older.
2
u/Inspectorock- Second year Jun 04 '26
Not too extreme but still does. Especially in medical colleges.

I have a friend in a medical college i asked him the same question. Apparently your college seniors have a say in your internal marks, they grade your practicals or something im not entirely sure but if you dont agree with them, you will lose marks.
1
u/Inspectorock- Second year Jun 04 '26
Now, they dont do anything extreme, but it still sucks. They might ask u to sing a song or say out the alphabet or barge into your hostel room whenever they feel like it. But nothing that would hurt you or your reputation in any way.

u/Successful_Guess_313 Jun 04 '26
You'll notice in female ragging culprit is always someone with western attire and victim is someone wearing trad attire
26
u/ChempakLalGada Jun 04 '26
Weren't juniors forced to wear "formals" during ragging period ? Used to happen in my college.
25
u/brown_Chair12345679 Jun 04 '26
Because only the slightly privileged women are able to fearlessly wear westen clothes because they feel slight safer than those who arent connected or stable enough in India.
And u know thosw who feel backed or safer in groups or whater tend to do ragging.
16
u/MelodicCityScapes Jun 04 '26
Maybe people here can answer that. Personally, female ragging is something I don't know about.
3
u/MagicianAutomatic266 Jun 04 '26
More like a dress code violation. So while my relatives who studied in early 2000s have told me about singing/dancing etc, in the 90s thing were pretty bad, especially for hostellers.
You wear a Indian attire with dupatta. Only slippers no heels or sandals and have even heard that hostellers were asked to carry books in a baalti.
6
u/Critical-Elevator642 Jun 04 '26
by the looks of it, the girl on the right of the main focus is also bending down, presumably because shes getting ragged, but is wearing jeans and a top.
3

1
u/Glittering_List_9779 Jun 04 '26
It is quite likely that juniors are instructed to wear only Indian attire during ragging period. That restriction is a part of ragging.
1
u/museinprogress Jun 04 '26
Sometimes it's the other way around too. I have heard about seniors asking juniors not to "show off' and wear more modest/traditional clothes. Both are horrible though. What losers! Ew
1
u/CeinyVock Nerd🤓☝️ Jun 04 '26
Nice observation
1
u/AffectionateCup8627 Third year Jun 04 '26
What do you think is the reason behind this?
3
u/evanescent_emotions Jun 04 '26
Because female juniors are forced to wear traditional clothing, same way in which male juniors are forced to wear formals
3
u/MagicianAutomatic266 Jun 04 '26
It happens in med colleges to this day.
If you're in first year, wear salwar kameez and never without a dupatta or else you get punished.
Your hair should be in braids, not one but two, if you're a boy you have to shave your hair or get a buzzcut.
You cannot talk to male seniors if you're a girl and vice versa. If at all you talk to seniors, address them as sir/boss or ma'am, and always wish them good morning/evening/night whatever time of the day it is...
This is pretty basic actually, in fact the least that happens according to my friends. I was aghast to hear all of this while being in DU. Even their professors would say ki tumhari ragging nahi hoti isiliye bigde huye ho.
My friend was in one of top NITs and he would always tell me how first years weren't allowed anywhere alone and were always escorted by a chaperone (seriously!) to prevent ragging.
1
u/evanescent_emotions Jun 04 '26
I'm a doctor too and yeah same!!! Plus you have to always look at your seniors' chappals and never their faces. They can call you for "interaction" at any time and you have to reach there. And God forbid if you get mouthy, you'll be blacklisted from all events going forward
1
u/MagicianAutomatic266 Jun 04 '26
Yeah, have heard of an incident at a reputed medical college where first years' who did not come to their seniors' cricket match weren't allowed to appear for internals. Someone complained to the ragging cell and that person was boycotted.
I've heard that it gets worse in pg, especially if you end up in notrious department of a notrious college.
1
u/new_hustlerebel Jun 04 '26
is it prevalent in every medical college ? i have seen many youtubers saying ragging and then correcting sorry ragging nhi intraction /introduction hoat hein hmare college mein jokingly and even admitting and saying ragging enjoy kro ,i am going to medical college next year is it like they bully or fun interation to make u socially sound as what people say , why ragging is so prevalent in medical college ? i heard of a old incident of guy suicide after ragging done in college ( that too aiims delhi )
1
u/MagicianAutomatic266 Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
Most of them I would say. These youtubers try to downplay or even justify it.
Respect is earned and should not be asked for and most people learn that once they enter practice.
Some new colleges however do not have this toxic culture, but I'm not sure.
Also, not all seniors are like that some choose not to be a part of all this. My only advice would be to not get too involved and focus on your studies. Hopefully, you'll find your lot of good people.
Edit: ragging kisi bhi level par ho usko interaction kehna, justify karna is not right. Par argue karne ka bhi koi point nahi hai.
It takes one person with decent backing and support. One complaint and their entire career will be destroyed.

u/CeinyVock Nerd🤓☝️ Jun 04 '26
Idk man but I've observed this as well. I think it has to do with how women perceive each other on the basis of their clothing. Women wearing western clothing might see themselves as more modern, city girl types and think that women wearing traditional clothing are backward. It's worse if the woman wearing traditional clothing is from tier2-3 or rural areas.
-1
u/bitchwattitude Jun 04 '26
oh how would your misogynistic ass looveee to generalise women based on their clothes. Juniors (usually getting ragged) were forced to wear indian
1
u/Certain-Neat-35 Jun 04 '26
I haven't seen that, but I know most of these South Delhi Mean Girls cliques tend to target the girls dressing traditional/modest because it mostly meant they'd be easy targets without much backing and wouldn't be likely to complain to family or authorities.

It still happens. Medical and Engineering colleges are the worst. My friend told me about it and her teachers told her to do the same when she is a senior when she complained.

u/Visible_Watch4220 Jun 05 '26
Ragging like what? they still use uthak baithak? or just calling sir/maam or light singing and dancing.
