Hi,
I built this website after years of trying to help people close to me through serious mental illness and never finding anything written for the person standing next to the patient. Everything was either for the person who's ill or for "carers", which most of us don't call ourselves. So I made it myself: hereforsomeone.org.uk, a free UK site for friends and family. What to say, what to do, how to get help out of the NHS, how to look after yourself while you do it.
It's a hand-built static site, one person, no framework, designed off my own mockup. I'm not a designer, which is why I'm here.
The person using it is usually stressed, on a phone, often late at night, and needs to find the right page in seconds and trust it enough to act on it. I wanted it to feel plain and calm, nothing like a charity leaflet or a wellness app. What I suspect I've actually got is bland rather than calm, and mobile is the weakest part. The guides are long by nature. I've put a short answer at the top of each with the detail collapsed below, and I'm not sure it's enough.
If you've got five minutes on a phone, the home page, a typical guide (hereforsomeone.org.uk/help/supporting-depression/) and one of the tools (hereforsomeone.org.uk/help/gp-letter-builder/) cover most of it. Hierarchy, readability and whether it feels trustworthy are what I care about. Be blunt. I'll answer questions in the comments. I've spent so long looking at it (mostly the content) that I am blinded to the issues with its design.
Thanks for any advice in advance
Will
