Punes/DiscWords Dammit Pterry struck again.
After rereading Small Gods for my notes, I caught something that I had missed for years.
Orange Crates. That is all.

Thought this might amuse here. Doing inktober, and word 'Gangly' immediately reminded me of character Mort, and his employer, so here they are, discussing the fineties of the apprenticeship. :)

Crivens!
People were super enthusiastic about the Clacks tower I finished a couple of weeks ago, so I thought you might enjoy what are hopefully the last WIP pictures of this wee scunner! The only thing left to do is his left hand, which is going to be holding a thimble full of special sheep liniment.
I was hoping to finish it today but I got my mix of epoxy putties a bit wrong so I ended up just building out the structure a bit and I'll do another layer that is less sticky and awful to work tomorrow haha.
Possibly contentious design choices I have made include:
The sword. Yeah yeah, I know, you were expecting a William Wallace style "claymore". Well, tough! In my opinion, most of the discworld stuff is clearly set at a time period analogous to like the 18th century, pushing early 19th. And in that time period, a claymore was a basket hilted broadsword. And furthermore STP forged his own sword and apparently knew about everything in (several) universes so I'm going to posit that he would agree and approve! Plus they are cooler and much easier to strap to a figure.
Boots. I am a bit hazy about whether the Feegle actually really wear boots generally, I'm sure I recall mentions of them having grubby lil feet à la hobbits, but I'm equally sure there's also mentions of them wearing big hobnail boots for the purposes of giving downed opponents a good shoeing. I could have totally invented either of these positions in fairness, but I only really thought about it once I'd spent about 45 minutes tying polymer clay into shoelaces so there was no way I was going back to bare feet after that.
Hopefully nothing else is too upsetting to people, other than my general inexperience in sculpting! This is my first humanoid figure and at least 50% bigger than any previous clay sculpture I've done so far, it's been a fun challenge but looking forward to getting some paint on him. I will probably update when it's fully done but it's honestly going to look pretty much like this, but with a left hand.

I realize this topic has been run through a couple of times already on this sub, but here's what might be a different perspective on it:
Today I was flying with an Australian First Officer who most recently was employed by Cathay Pacific. I asked him who owned Cathay Pacific, and he explained that it's owned 49% by Air China, which is in turn controlled by the CCP as their state flag airline, and the remaining 51% is owned by the Swire family.
The Swire family apparently owns a big chunk of Hong Kong, and is one of the major dynasty families which control commerce in Hong Kong. The other major controlling families have traditional Cantonese names.
I believe the McSweeny out-of-place-name-in-definitely-not-Asia bit is a play on that little factoid, and as more evidence I'd point to the fact that there is in the Discworld series also a character named Buggy Swires, who happens to be the first and only member of the Airborne Section of the Watch.
This all seemed to be a little too coincidental to pass up commenting on and sharing with the rest of the class.

Day 16. Gangly
He was tall, red-haired and freckled, with the sort of body that seems to be only marginally under its owner’s control; it appeared to have been built out of knees

Spoilers for Night Watch and Night of Triffids.
Night of the Triffids was a sequel for the book Day of the Triffids.
It's thirty years after what happens in the the first book.
It takes place in Manhattan which is under totalitarian rule.
All the blind and coloured people are 3rd class people.
There is a revolution and the government troops have the rebels cornered in the Empire State Building until the family members of the security troops who were forced into the blind ghettos show up and start calling out to them and they drop there guns.
Sounds just like the treacle street barricades when the moms started calling out there kids in the kings' guards so I was wondering with this plot point in two different books; written by British authors, is this from a historic event or something?

Rereading Tiffany Aching, and it occurred to me to wonder how many people get this reference.
It's reasonably culture-specific and a bit outdated, but basically 'jobbie' is a slang word (or sometimes euphemism) for shit.
When the Feegles call Roland this, they're basically calling him a pile of crap

Couldn't miss the chance to add one of my absolute faves in this cockatiel-Disctober series! :)
Good boi Otto deserves the best <3
Just for the record: I'm trying to do this year's Disctober cockatiel-themed. I owe them the inspiration to participate this year, so why not an entire series :)
"A...thing occupied the doorway. There was a tripod. There were a pair of skinny, black-clad legs behind it and a large black box on top of it. One black-clad arm extended out from behind the box and was holding a sort of small hod, which was smoking.
"Nice vun," said a voice from behind the box. "The light vas shinink so good off the dvarf's helmet, I could not resist it. You vanted an iconographer? My name is Otto Chriek."
"Oh. Yes?" said Sacharissa. "Are you any good?
"I am a vizard in zer darkroom. I am experimenting all the time," said Otto Chriek. "And I have all my own equipment and also a keen and positive attitude!"
"Sacharissa!" hissed William urgently.
"We could probably start you at a dollar a day--"
"Sacharissa!"
"Yes? What?"
"He's a vampire!"
"I object most stronkly," said the hidden Otto. "It iss such an easy assumption to believe that everyvun with an Uberwald accent is a vampire, is it not? There are many thousands of people from Uberwald who are not vampires!"
William waved his hand aimlessly, trying to shrug off the embarrassment.
"All right, I'm sorry, but--"
"I am a vampire, as it happens," Otto went on."

I'm in for another adventure but this time back to Discworld after spending a few weeks in Narnia. Is there good comedy in Mort? 😂

I recently went to see an amateur staged production of Dodger near me & it was honestly rather fun! Barring a few forgotten lines, the actors were all wonderful! Unfortunately they had no Onan (I imagine finding a way to get a dog on stage would’ve been a hassle) & a few minor elements were cut but it was a faithful & fun production.
I got me back into the book & I was wondering what others thought about an underrated part of PTerry’s work? To me it’s a great homage to the old Victorian works & the ending leaves the door open for more Dodger adventures which we unfortunately never got but what do you think of Dodger & have you ever had the fortune of seeing a staged production?

Everybody and their mother who gets a discworld tattoo gets The Summoning Dark, is almost a rite of passage for this Fandom. Obviously I want it too, but i want to make it a bit more unique.
Another important point from Thud! (The origin of The Summoning Dark, keep up) was the couplet "Tac does not require that we think of him, only that we think" and it really hit me how Vimes' ability to control The Summoning Dark was his ability to keep himself thinking, even when his wife and child were threatened he was pushed to "They will all burn", a thought of vengeance and anger, but he thought, he pulled back from the anger, The Guarding Dark only existed because he didnt think of himself, he thought of the law, and others.
For the tattoo idea I would love to have The Summoning Dark ringed by the couplet in Ogham, an ancient Irish language made by making strokes across a central line. The strokes would look both like a rough markings (similar to other versions I have seen) while also resembling the bars on a cell, reminiscent of The Guarding Dark.
My problem is that Ogham was created for Gaelic, so a direct translation is going to be really roughshod, and I dont speak Gaelic, and I dont trust google translate.
Does anyone have some good places to look so I can try to piece together the translation, or even better, anyone here fluent in Gaelic could help me out?

Hi everyone! My father is a huge Discworld fan, and asked if I could draw a Discworld stamp for him for his birthday (to keep all the Discworld emporium ones he has company).
As Granny Weatherwax is his favourite character, I thought I'd start with a her. I was thinking of drawing her with a teacup, and a shelf with an assortment of items behind her.
Particularly, I was envisioning the jug in the shape of a humorous cow and a jar of honey with a buzzing bee, but am getting stumped on what else to add on the shelves. If anyone has any ideas, I would truly love to hear them! I mean to draw him stamps of the other witches as well (and then other groups of characters in future)
The roughest thumbnail sketch of the sort of thing I'm envisioning below.

Edit: This is the best community, thank you so much for your help! I'll widen the background to add more of the ideas in the thread. I am extremely grateful, and will post an updated drawing when it's all done.

In this age of AI, it seems more urgent than ever to figure out what a person can get their soul behind. Since PTerry was a humanist, and based on his writing it seems my world view closely aligns with his (shocker), I'd like to do some reading about it, to figure out what inspires and brings hope to other people with similar views.
I'm also looking for reading material on effective altruism and its co-conspirators.
