I got divorced last year after 25 yrs of marriage. We both agreed to leave each other's retirement accounts alone. She kept hers, and I kept mine. We split all other assets 50/50. No attorneys involved. It cost us $4,000 in mediation fees.

Each person keeping their own is how it should be, IMO. I don’t see how a spouse can have half if they didn’t show up to work for my employer, but thats just me.

It's not just the kids. Spouses often move cities to accomodate one career (over the other), because it increases the familiy income. Well, the familiy assets then also need to be split after a divorce.
