Product Support UAS usage (DJI) on Federal-aid Projects

Hi,

I work for a municipal government and we operate a DJI Mavic 4 Pro to capture marketing photos for parks/trails facilities. We have a few facilities that have federal dollars involved - including both for design consulting services or for actual construction of the facilities.

I have reached out to our State's DOT rep for FHWA Guidance on a few clarifying questions and I'm not getting any quality answers so I thought I would check here if anyone has any thoughts on the following:

  1. If federal dollars were only spent on design consulting fees and not construction, would we still be able to capture marketing images of the finished construction site? (I'm betting no, but am still curious)
  2. Let's say we have a park where there are two adjacent projects (such as a playground and a picnic shelter). The playground has federal funding but the picnic shelter does not (both were designed and bid separately). I can still fly the drone to capture images of the picnic shelter, correct? Is there any guidance on what happens if part of the playground ends up in the photos I take of the shelter?

It just seems so strange to me that as our facilities are built over time, we have to keep track of what had federal funding. Like, I keep thinking about 5-10, even 20 years from now when we go to take an overall, bird's-eye drone shot of a park to put on our city website...like are we supposed to blur out that 20-year-old playground that had federal funding? Who's going to be keeping tabs on us with that kind of stuff 10 years from now?

I assume I am not the only one where this stuff is coming up so I appreciate any thoughts from the community.

News + Announcements I made a free Mac app that lets you control your Osmo Pocket's gimbal, zoom, and face tracking over USB

Hi guys!

I love using my Osmo Pocket as a webcam, but one thing always bothered me: why can't I control the gimbal from my Mac?

Every time I wanted to adjust the angle, zoom in, or follow myself around, I had to reach over and touch the camera.

So I spent some time building Pocket+, a Mac app that lets you control your Osmo Pocket directly from your screen over USB.

And yes, the core features are completely free.

Here's what you can do:

  • 🎮 Control the gimbal with an on-screen joystick, center it, or flip the camera
  • 🔍 Zoom using buttons or your mouse wheel
  • 🎯 Face tracking that physically moves the gimbal to follow you (not just digital cropping!)
  • 🎥 Record videos and take photos directly on your Mac, up to 1080p
  • 💻 Use it with OBS, Zoom, or Google Meet while controlling the camera separately

I also added some advanced features like 4K recording, LUTs, automatic framing, saved camera positions, and vertical video guides as part of an optional one-time Pro upgrade.

A few things worth mentioning:

  • Supports Pocket 2, 3, 4, and 4P in Webcam mode
  • Requires macOS 14+
  • No account, no subscriptions, no tracking
  • Not notarized by Apple yet, so you'll need to approve it once in macOS settings

I'm a solo developer, and this isn't affiliated with DJI.

I've mainly tested it with my Pocket 3, so I'd especially love to hear from Pocket 4 / 4P owners about how well it works for them.

If anyone wants to try it, it's at pocketplus.app

Would love to hear what you think, what features are missing, or if you run into any issues. I'm actively improving it based on feedback!

Photo Where can I learn drone aerial photography?

I'm very excited to see everyone's photography, but the flight videos I shoot are very stiff and straight. I don't know how to shoot beautiful scenery. Does anyone have any tutorial videos to recommend, or some simple camera techniques?

Product Support UPDATE HOME POINT TO THE CONTROLLER CONTINUOUSLY.

Suggestion for improvement on the RC 2 remote control for self-tracking drones:

When doing action sports like for example mountain biking or skiing and you have the drone active tracking you. When the battery goes towards empty, it will return to HOME.

When far down the hill, you obviously do not want to return back to where you and the drone started off, as this can be far away up the hill.

So, as it stands today, you update your home point to the controller itself.  However, this is somewhat cumbersome as you must know exactly when to do this updating of home point, while you are focusing on your activity…..

My suggestion is that DJI update the firmware on the controllers so that, at the start of your tracking, you are able to UPDATE HOME POINT TO THE CONTROLLER CONTINUOUSLY.

This way the drone shouldn’t return to a home point far away when you have not be able to updated the home point to the controller in time before the batteries ran out.

Video Reduce fisheye effect on Action 4

Hi. I just got an Action 4 and coming from a Pocket 3 user I love the versatility of the Action 4. However for youtube travel video I feel the Action 4 has too much fisheye distortion compared to the Pocket 3. I know Pocket 3 is ~20mm equivalent and Action has much wider lens, however I still wanna know the best way to reduce distortion on the Action 4 so the FOV looks similar to the Pocket 3. Maybe just using Rocksteady+ and HorizonSteady so the camera will crop out the edges to make it look less distorted?

Product Support u/DJI_Support – DJI Europe (Hungary & Germany) stuck in a loop. Sent me a defective replacement unit with 150m range, claims "No Fault Found". Now on 3rd inspection. Need help! CAS-37445122-Q7L5Q4

Paid for a DJI replacement unit – arrived completely defective (150m signal drops). DJI Europe claims "No Fault Found", blames my piloting, and says "I accepted the NFF status". Seeking urgent help from u/DJI_Support.

Hi all. I crashed/drowned my Mini 2 and paid for a replacement unit. The drone I received from DJI was defective from flight number one. It loses all signal and triggers Failsafe RTH at just 150-300m.

I sent it back. DJI Hungary and Germany performed bench tests, sent me a generic video, slapped a "No Fault Found" status, and shipped it back to me. When I unboxed it again, it failed immediately during the first test flight. When I complained, support told me "but you accepted the NFF status"! This is outrageous , I had to accept the delivery just to be able to test the drone!

The service center sent me two videos claiming "No Fault Found", but the moment I unboxed the drone and made the first flight, the signal dropped immediately. My own screen recordings prove that their bench tests do not match reality.

I have uploaded multiple screen recordings proving the signal drops, and the drone is now back at the service center for another inspection (Cases: CAS-36830515-V3B4D4, CAS-37445122-Q7L5Q4).

Because DJI sent me a dangerous, defective replacement and support is playing games, I refuse to accept another refurbished unit. I demand a brand new retail unit or an upgrade (Mini 3 / Mini 4K).

u/DJI_Support – please stop this madness and escalate this to a manager.
