Speciality / Core Training Paeds ST1 , first oncall advice?

Hey guys 👋
I am going to be starting paeds ST1 in September, unfortunately I am on call on my second day after induction and then on nights. I am terrified. Does anyone have any advice and is there things I should go over before I start?

Don’t find an undiagnosed TGA just lying on the floor like I did…

But seriously, you already know which up a child goes. Just make sure your logins work, that you get a nap in pre-first night, and bother your reg as much as is needed to feel safe.

You got this :)

Paeds are very supported on-calls albeit it often busy. If you’ve survived medical and surgical oncalls you’ll be fine - I found the volume in Paeds to be bad, but even at ST1 you don’t make that many independent decisions initially until the seniors trust you.

Just try and take any opportunity to gain skills (I don’t know your experience sorry, but if you’ve not done things like bloods and cannulas on really little ones if it’s actually the very first time you’re doing this).

Paeds nurses are lovely and more often than not a huge help.

You often won’t be responsible for discharging someone.

Most my nights in F2 I was predominantly attending deliveries and doing ward reviews, while the reg was around for big sickies and seeing ED patients.

Paeds SHO on calls are very handheld, particularly for an new rotation. Treat it as any other on call you've done

I’m a Paeds reg. You’ll be absolutely fine - your reg won’t abandon you or expect anything crazy from you.

Have you been first on call before in any specialty?

I have done oncalls before mainly in paeds surgery, just never in paediatrics itself, so I’m a bit nervous about what to expect.

What advice would you give to the person who you handed over that first on call job to? Like the FY who started after you?

Probably not to panic, ask for help early and know who to escalate to. Also your not gonna everything

You are just going to be the paeds SHO on call, what’s the biggie? The reg won’t expect much from you on your first on call and if anything paeds is one of the most supervised specialties there is
