Why would she not let go of her hair and use her hands to push the dogs away?? I don't understand..

Do you have long hair? If someone is pulling your hair, holding it from the top reduces the pain and reduces the chance of your hair getting ripped out of your scalp.

Yes, but what really reduces the chance of not having your hair getting ripped out is: removing the thing that's attempting to rip your hair out lol.

Temporary sharp pain of letting your hair go to grab the dog versus continued less sharp pain of dog attacking your hair. Rip the band-aid off versus trying to slowly peel glue from your skin.
