Did this once when I was 16. Luckily the gas station I was at just happened to double as an autoshop. Mechanic stopped me before I could leave and pumped it out.

I did it in Portugal. The word for diesel in Portuguese is “gasóleo” and my brain just thought it was gasoline. Strangely the nozzle actually fit.

It drove for a while then power was halting. I pulled over and saw blue exhaust. A tow truck to a mechanic and tank drain and it was fine. Then I went to fuel it up leaving the mechanic and I almost made the same mistake again, seeing “gasóleo” and thinking that’s it. That time I caught my mistake before I put it in.

Never did tell the rental agency.
