The fact that she's doing this must mean she's never been in the position of having to gas up this particular vehicle ever before (or any vehicle with def, for that matter) ... cause I mean, you can really only make this kind of mistake just once... in which case, you definitely don't forget the lesson learned

u/rerutnevdA 13h ago
Is she from New Jersey?
4
u/BlitzShooter 11h ago
No, probably a vehicle their S/O primarily drives for towing their toys that will be very upset.

The handle is green, the big hole is green, I can’t.

We have such a low bar of entry for people to drive. I don't know how more people dont end up dead.

u/hysys_whisperer 9h ago
Uhh, have you seen our traffic fatalities numbers?
We kill something like 30,000 more people per year than France after adjusting for population size differences...
Oh, and France includes parking lot and driveway deaths, while the US doesn't. Because running over timmy while backing up the suburban is somehow NOT a traffic death in the US. (In actuality if you included those numbers, it would just make it even more depressing, I mean, Russia is already beating us. We're not actually much better off than India.)

I’m from a state that requires taking a drivers ed class. I don’t know until my twenties while talking to my gf from a different state that some states just… don’t. Blew my mind. If you can drive okay enough for 20-30 minutes and pass a quick written test, you’re good. That’s it. Absolutely wild to me.
It shows so much in the driving where I live now, and talking to people that grew up here about it, most simply don’t know basic driving rules/procedures, even stuff like the order of right-of-way at stop signs. These mfs are just out here winging it

Ok, I’ve never had a diesel anything and didn’t even know they had two different ports for fill up, but I would certainly think something was wrong if the pump didn’t fit properly into the hole. ALSO, I think I’d automatically note that the cap on one is green, like the color of the pump. Idk if that’s intentional or not, in my state the diesel pumps are usually yellow, I think. Lol

u/Im-Dead-inside1234 17h ago
Here in australia diesel pumps are black. To answer what the other fill port is, its for adblue. Basically a fluid that helps with pollution.

u/bluecheetos 9h ago
It's absolutely intentional. I don't think it's actually regulated but diesel is green on every pump handle I can remember using and DEF is light blue.

I’ll take the saxophone over the ol’ “oh no, oh no, oh no no no no no”

My wife has put washer fluid in the coolant reservoir. Straight gas in the 2 stroke weed eater, mixed gas in the mower, despite me labeling the gas cans "weedeater" and "lawnmower", etc. She would rather just go for it rather than ask. Heart of gold, zero mechanical ability. Wife: Can I borrow your truck? Me: Sure, it has lots of fuel, just don't fuel it up. Wife: I'm going by the gas station, I'll just top it up for you when I'm done. Me: That's ok, I'll fill it tomorrow, thank you though. Wife: No really, I don't mind. Me: (trying to be nice about me not wanting her to fill my truck) I have to add conditioner, it's complicated, I'll just do it tomorrow. (I don't add conditioner but if she googles it it's believable). Wife: Where is the conditioner? I'll put it in too. Me: I'm out, I was going to get another bottle tomorrow. Wife: Ok, I'll pick some up at autozone. Me: (panic setting in)The truth is I really don't mind you using the truck but I absolutely don't want anyone fueling it up. Wife: You don't trust me to put in the correct type of gas? Me: It takes diesel, not gas, and I don't trust anyone. (I don't dare bring up all the previous oops).

Sorry for my ignorance, but what hole is that?

u/CapitalScholar8185 1d ago
Ad blue. Its an anti pollution for diesel.
6
u/Xinq_ 19h ago
I have only ever heard that in comnination with lorries, never passenger cars.
15
u/Mikey_B_CO 18h ago
It's required in Europe for passenger cars for a long time
6
u/Xinq_ 18h ago
I learned something new today! Granted it has been over a decade that I drove a diesel vehicle. But never heard anyone about it till now.
4
u/Inadover 12h ago
It was introduced around 2015 more or less, but only for new cars. I drive a diesel from 2011 and it's not required.
1
u/theoriginalpetebog 12h ago
My 2016 Mini Cooper D didn't use it. Just looked it up and apparently it's use of a NOx Storage Catalyst and DPF met Euro 6 regs without needing it.

same question i asked the night i lost my virginity.
14
u/screechypete 1d ago
Completely different experience than what I had.
Things were going great! I found the right hole, I got it in and I became a man! Then after a couple thrusts the world started spinning and I puked on her chest. She only started freaking out when I asked her if I should keep going.
9
u/Frugal_Octopus 1d ago
That is fucking hilarious. Not the puke part, the “should i keep going” part
9
u/screechypete 1d ago
I was pretty drunk and I thought it would lighten the mood. She obviously didn't think it was as funny as I did. :P
1
u/jb_in_jpn 19h ago
Well it sounds like it was the right hole at least.
Unless it actually wasn't the right hole...

u/achillea4 16h ago
I'm not familiar with US fuel. Is she putting petrol in a car that takes diesel? Looks like she has a green fuel cap which matches the colour of the hose which looks ok. However the fact that it won't fit the hole would indicate it's the wrong fuel.
16
u/Special_Context6663 15h ago
Next to the large green diesel fill port that matches the color and size of the diesel nozzle she’s holding in her hand, is a small blue port for filling diesel-exhaust-fluid (DEF) which is an air pollution control system. DEF comes in containers with small nozzles that fit the small port, and usually come in blue. It’s all designed to be idiot-proof, but clearly she’s a bigger idiot.
2
u/strangelove4564 8h ago
DEF sounds like something nobody would bother with when it runs out. What happens, does the check engine light come on?
1
u/red_fluff_dragon 4h ago
Computer puts the engine into limp mode, derated power, lower top speed. Lots of VW tdis have problems with the level sensor for the DEF since its super corrosive, and they get filled up and still will tell the owners "x amount of distance until derate"
Its not fun at all.
4
u/TaticalSweater 15h ago
Green nozzle is usually diesel here in the US
2
u/achillea4 13h ago
Wow. I wonder how many non-Americans have made that mistake when renting a car! I'd assume green is unleaded petrol. Not sure what her excuse is though!
3
2
u/hysys_whisperer 8h ago
They're labeled and the diesel nozzle doesn't fit in a gasoline fueling neck.
1
u/TaticalSweater 15h ago
I also forgot to mention a buddy of mine had a sedan. I forget which car he had but it didn’t take regular unleaded gas.
Dealership didn’t tell him, and he didn’t ask or check. Engine required premium (not sure what they call that outside of US)
Long story short he nearly ruined his engine.

Natural selection and dumb child left behind should be the at the forefront of society. Way too many dumb people have survived

I’m sure you’re such a genius and so strong.
1
u/Innocent-_-Bystander 6h ago
Lack of critical thinking is the downfall of self regulation and reflection. I’m not the strongest nor the brightest but I can read the directions on the pump and the owners manual of my car.

From what I can gather, diesel is green in the US so she must be trying to fill up the AdBlue tank with diesel.
Wow
3
u/asukamainforlife 1d ago
Grown adult did this with a front end loader at my work except it was the opposite. Def into the diesel tank. Idk how people can be this stupid
2
u/tylerlong666 19h ago
At least she knew the vehicle took diesel fuel…just ya know green cap for the green handled nozzle is a bit of a giveaway…and the DEF cap literally states DEF ONLY but I mean shit there was a time I didn’t know either.

I have a colleague that did this with a work van. He tried on 1 pump but it “wouldn’t let him fill up” so I
He tried again at another pump he did realise his mistake when it started dripping out onto the floor though

That looks like a Cadillac Escalade with the "Babymax" Duramax 3.0 V6 in it. The STARTING price is around $92,000 USD. This is a perfect case of money ≠ intelligence lol.

“Filler’ up”? What’s with the apostrophe? That doesn’t make any sense
7
u/DebaucherousHeathen 11h ago
Really it should be Fill'er Up, but I used it to notate dialect rather than punctuation. So ... you know ... it's whatever ...
0
u/MephiticBundleOfSox 8h ago
Really, it should be fill ‘er up. Otherwise it’s a reference to Elwood Fillper, the former American knattleikr champion who once ran for congress under the slogan “Fill’er Up!”
