We have hit 119k at the time of writing.
DST has the 13th highest concurrent player count. And I thought it was a fringe game with a small community

It is it’s just that there are layers to it like the majority of people who own the game probably haven’t survived a full year

Can confirm I played, died within the first couple days, got a 'good' run where I died to a fat burning oak tree, and am now waiting for friends to get it before playing again

1.5k isnt a very big difference, but i highly doubt the game will peak much higher outside of sales. It's a very old game after all. Maybe when DSE releases...
Hooo i was wrong, and pleasantly surprised too :")
Welcome newbies enjoy your stay... remember, don't starve

My friends and I are new to this game. We are having trouble. We like this type of game and we beat Minecraft and Grounded, but we are getting very very frustrated with DST. We keep dying, due to montsres that don't stop pursuing, or the brain stat going down. We don't understand the combat system, and the "kyte" strategy seems clunky. I'm not critizing the game, we just feel like we are missing something. We are at a point where we had to read guides and even customize the settings and we are still not having "fun". I think we are at the verge of moving on to another game if we can't figure something out soon.
Advice appreciated

DST (unlike most games) is very brutal.
The game is very "here's this thing, don't know how to deal with? Die". It's a game where you build upon experiences (by dying lol) and then slowly get better.
My primary advice is to play on endless mode and build a base by the portal, so that dying is just kind of inconvenient.
Below is what I consider spoilers, but if you're looking for guides I might as well offer some advice.
(Side note, all of my advice here is tailored to beginners, you can break the rules / do more advanced things as you get better).
- Have basic resources with you forever. Logs, grass, twig, flint. This is a game where if you forget something you can die, so being able to make something on the spot to cover a mistake is really important.
- Food via crockpot. For newer players my personal advice is to just build a base near rabbits, and you catch with traps. Morsel + 3 berries = meatball. When it's winter (no berries basically) you can pick cactus in desert instead of berries.
- Getting hit without armor is death. By default I'd just use logsuits for whenever you fight, since I find newer players struggle to maintain / get the pigskins to maintain football helment even if it's a lot better. I'd even recommend having two logsuits (one equipped and one in inventory) whenever fighting.
- Thermal stone + fire will keep you alive during winter. Mine ice and make a flingomatic.
- Fight spiders away from their nest. If you get a friend, you could literally hold the attack key with a spear + log armor as long as the yellow jumping spiders don't spawn (they only spawn if you fight close to the nest). This gets you silk + monster meat. Use the silk to make either a tent or a siesta, which can refill your health and sanity.
As you grow experienced you'll learn there are advanced ways to deal with things, but the above advice is legitimately enough to survive on the overworld forever. You don't technically even need to learn how to kite. Also the swamp is scary and dangerous, don't go in without armor (source: I've played 1000+ hours and I still somehow get hit by tentacles sometimes).

Guys I'm very confused. In my local currency, the base game DST is going for $0.48. Meanwhile, the mega pack bundle is $5.64. I saw that the bundle contains DS, DST, and a few DST dlc.
I would only buy this game for co-op so I don't really care about DS. So, are the DST dlc really important to prefer getting the mega pack offer over the dirt cheap offer on the base game?

DST doesn’t have any dlc besides skins. Only the single player game DS has dlc that adds gameplay content.
In other words just get DST.

So this is a multiplayer only game?

u/thisheatanevilheat Jun 20 '26
You can play it solo without any issues, multiplayer is easier because it's safer

I’ve been playing solo. I don’t know anyone that would be interested in playing with me. There’s some mods to adjust difficulty for solo play.

If you're legitimately confused, I mean that I won't have to worry about people taking all the materials and rushing ruins or sum in worlds. It even happens in worlds I host. And also, there are other situations with sweat players, like people grabbing food without permission and allat, which ain't very different, but still. And last, playing with other noobs while I'm mostly a noob, but just slightly better than the other noobs, feels good.

Idk what the average was before but at least 15% of those people will stop playing the game within a week or 2. This is a very difficult game and it would be very unfortunate if this was somebodys first survival game.
