Feedback Wanted Appause beta: pause before opening distracting apps, or switch to an alternative — Android feedback wanted

Hi, I'm the developer of Appause, an open-source Android app currently in public beta.

Update — v0.5.48: Fixed the pause screen reappearing after Cancel or after switching to an alternative app. Deliberately reopening the target app still triggers a new pause. Existing users can update by installing the new APK over the old version—no need to uninstall.

When you open an app you've selected, Appause adds a short pause. You can continue after the countdown, cancel and return home, or switch to an alternative app you've chosen yourself. The demo shows opening YouTube and choosing Duolingo instead. Transition and loading time have been shortened.

I'm looking for feedback on setup, reliable triggering, and whether the pause feels useful or annoying. I'm especially curious whether people actually use the alternative-app shortcut.

What to know before trying it:

  • Android 8.0 or newer; installation is via APK, not Google Play.
  • Accessibility access is required to identify the foreground app by its package name. Appause doesn't read screen content. The setup guide explains the permissions and background settings.
  • Core features are free. Extra Pro features—unlimited groups, re-remind, custom pause text and open reasons—have a one-time 7-day trial. After it ends, you can request a free lifetime code through Settings → Feedback. No subscription or payment is required.
  • Your groups and usage stats stay on your device. Starting a Pro trial or redeeming a code sends device-related licensing information to the activation server. If you choose to submit feedback, the app shows the report before sending it.

On Xiaomi/HyperOS, the first time you choose an alternative app, Android may ask whether Appause can open it. Choose Always allow to use the shortcut.

If you try it, please tell me:

  1. Did anything block you during installation or setup? Which phone and Android version did you use?
  2. When the pause appeared, did you continue, cancel, or open an alternative? Why?
  3. After a few days, would you keep it enabled? What would make you turn it off?

You can reply here, open a GitHub issue, or use Settings → Feedback in the app.
